When this bridge was built people traveled by wagon, coach, horseback and buggy or walking so they could shelter in them during bad weather until it passed but also it protected the wood to make them last longer.

I went to iowa in 1992 from calif it was like getting off the plain in the 50s its come a long way but still has a lot of old day feel to things i moved to a small town 15 min from winterset lot of wifes family live in winterset

You might try Strawberry Point around Veteran's day or in the Spring with all the hanging baskets. Then, Backbone State Park. That beautiful park sustained heavy damage by flood. At this point, you aren't too far from Field of Dreams.

I visited Winterset for a week in October during the Madison County Covered Bridge Festival held every year. It’s the greatest small town ever! My husband’s aunt lives there. It is truly like Mayberry! I’d live there if I could!

I used to . Early to mid 60s i remember my 6th (1968) birthday, , 2 Story House on a highway off of Winterset , property own by a Man named Saul . Remember the scenes from the movie "" cold turkey"" bring filmed there...

Thank You for touring our city and sharing your experience. There's alot of history here. Henry Wallace grew up here. He was the VP for Theodore Rosevelt. George Washington carver and George Stout was born here. He was portrayed by George Clooney in the movie The Monuments Men. He retrieved the artwork that was stolen by Nazis. Maybe bring your son in Oct for our Covered Bridge Festival. Will have more additions for kids to play. Music and vendors. Stop into the Chamber of Commerce for more story telling.

Cold Turkey, the movie, was filmed in Greenfield, Iowa, not Winterset. Greenfield not far from Winterset on Highway 92.

That's not true. I was Herr when Dick Van Dyke and Norman Lear made the movie. 1 block from my home. It was filmed in both towns.

Bro I'm telling you , that weird rusted tunnel-like thing that some kids are playing in , was the old Brick Schoolhouse in Winterset . ( I was a Student there) And the people Bowling ( stagecoach artwork on the wall ) was in the Gold Buffet , Winterset . I was living there as a Child at the time ...
