Man, I love your vocal analysis. I learn things every time. And every member of EC is so damn amazing. As for Nico, I've gone and explored the band he was in before (To the Rats and Wolves), and I'm... wow, the things he did there were amazing. I recommend just sitting down and going through a few of their songs. I can't wait until EC starts releasing more music, because we haven't even seen their full potential. I'm so freakin' excited!!!

I think it would be fun for you to do a double reaction to their tracks 'MC Thunder' and 'MC Thunder 2.' The first one features their old singer, and the second one features Nico (I think it's actually one of the first songs they've recorded with Nico). I'd love to hear you dissect the different approaches.

This is what is so good about metal, the growth and adaptability. No avenue is left unexplored and it can be confusing when bands are dropped into sub categorise (to me its just all flavours of metal) but the breadth of talent and imagination is amazing.

The amount of musicality to Kevin's harsh vocals is unmatched. Just looking at the progression from Hypa Hypa to here is ridiculous! I always go back to We Got The Moves for what I would consider the best example of the range he has, but I actually think it's done better here. It's especially evident in those base fry notes, as well as his first verse.

Chris, there's a growing rock band from Utah called Citizen Soldier. The singer, Jake Segura, attempted suicide in late 2015/early 2016 and is now a therapist who writes songs based on personal experiences, things said by fans and things said by some of his therapy clients. Not only are the songs awesome but his voice carries a huge amount of emotion in each song. I think that a great song to introduce his voice to you is Reason To Live since it's one of the most emotional ones and has a lot of different vocal qualities that he uses.

I've got a suggestion for you to analyse: Igorrr - Grosse Barbe (french for "Big Beard", though that won't tell you anything about the song or the performing artists). Due to the unusual mixture of musical genres and instrumentation, Igorrr generally falls under the category "Marmite" when it comes to people's response to the music. They either love it or hate it. The main composer of the band has dubbed his music "baroque-core", which really doesn't prepare you for the electronic elements that are a staple in pretty much all of his compositions. Regarding my suggestion, I think I should point out that you only hear the male vocalist, Laurent Lunoir, who has since left the band. I also advise to listen to the album recording, as the song doesn't have an official video and the available footage made on cell phones at live performances doesn't do the sound any justice. The song is a wild ride, even without the distortion and clipping that comes with a low quality recording. That said, I'm sure you will check out live performances after hearing the studio recording, because you'll barely believe what you hear ;-) Anyhow, "Grosse Barbe" will blow you out of your socks if you decide to give in, I promise! I've tried to suggest this song to Elizabeth from TCV, because the vocals very much invade her area of expertise, but she's not taken up my suggestion. Maybe you can suggest it to her if you like it. I would love to hear either of your takes or even better, both of them in one video maybe? Obviously if your undoubtedly busy schedules and logistics allow for another co-op...

I don't think you're entirely correct regarding the fry register and fry screaming. The technique I use for screaming *is* what you describe as "that is vocal fry". The "sigh" doesn't work for me. "Llifting something heavy" doesn't work for me. That type of vocal engagement causes pain for me no matter how I try to do it. What actually works for me is combining that low rumbly fry with my regular pitched voice into a pitched or semi-pitched scream.

I dont know if you already covered this subject, but, is it better to sing with a slightly higher larynx or is it better to keep it completely level. I’ve been singing for about a year or two now and your videos do seem to help, but I’ve noticed that I started slightly raising my larynx, it doesn’t cause any problems (if anything it make my singing feel a bit more fluid) but from what ive seen/read from other vocal coaches your supposed to keep it level, their is alot of discourse on the subject since one side says stay neutral, while the other says as long as it doesn’t hurt its fine. Its Kinda confusing
@chrisliepe
@chrisliepe 7 ай бұрын
It’s best to let your larynx float and do whatever it wants and not think about its position at all :) all those rules and opinions just seem to cause tension and focus or minds on the mechanics rather than the expressiveness and experience of singing :)

10:26 you've confused me here a little saying vocal fry has nothing to do with screams. I can slowly move my pitch up from vocal fry into a pitch scream seamlessly. Yeah it takes more compression and air flow when i get higher, but it feels identical otherwise
@chrisliepe
@chrisliepe 7 ай бұрын
That pitch scream you are doing doesn’t have “vocal fry” in it. Vocal fry as defined by loose primary cord engagement is not present in a pitch scream because the primary cords are vibrating together to make a pitch underneath the false cord or upper constricted engagement in the vocal tract. Vocal fry is totally useful for easing into other engagements as you have described though. Hope this clears things up!

"What Metal is becoming" - Look, I don't exactly pray at the metal church. I like a variety of styles of music, but to call this metal? I grew up with metal. Over the internet we don't have tone of voice, so please do not misconstrue this as angry. I don't always agree with your choices of music that you present on what was a predominantly hard rock and heavy metal channel when I first subscribed but it is your channel to do with whatever you like. The hard rock and heavy metal stars that were featured here often two years ago are what initially drew me to your channel, along with your intuitive approach to teaching. I really like the idea of an in intuitive approach to singing. It's such a nebulous art form. We don't get to see it get made, we just hear the end result, so an intuitive approach made sense to me and that combined with your emphasis on hard, heavy rock is why I chose you as my vocal coach. I grew up a heavy metal kid, I've played metal guitar since the 80s, the first metal I ever heard was Ozzy Osbourne with Randy Rhoads...I bought Metallica's KIll 'Em All at an import record store because none of the major record stores were carrying Metallica yet. They didn't think it would sell. Little did they know! I don't have room in my life for hate and I don't like a whiner or a chronic complainer, so again, just for emphasis, this is not meant to be taken as an angry post. Do I enjoy a robust exchange of ideas though? You bet! Image wise, these guys in this video have more in common with The Village People than Pantera. Tell me I'm wrong about that. Look at these guys and look at Phil Anselmo. Their demeanor could not be any more different. These guys, their whole gimmick, is as pop as pop gets. Electric Callboy, Electric Eskimo, The Electric Village People, whatever they're going by today, is everything heavy metal ever stood against. This is not music with heavy, dark themes for rebellious young people who don't fit into mainstream society. Want proof? "Hypa, hypa, you're pretty and I like ya" - I rest my case. Ronnie James Dio would be rolling over in his grave to hear a band that sings that line be considered metal. There's nothing wrong with pop music done well. I remember Ritchie Blackmore being asked about Abba. He replied: "At least they write melodies." Heh! You could put boatloads of distortion over the top of Dancing Queen. Wouldn't make it a metal song. Whether this group is an example of pop done well, that's a matter of opinion, but objectively, they do not have the themes, the emphasis on virtuosic musicianship, the guitar solos, the image, the bravado, the swagger or the moxie of a metal band.

This genre isn't exactly "metal", the proper term among metalheads for this music is "absolute pop garbage".

Let me clarify.. the quality of his singing is excellent.. but this is NOT metal and does not belong in metal. As a huge Judas priest fan I could care less about anyone's orientation but this is simply boy band singing over fake metal riffs..

@@franksings76 I've been to see Priest a number of times and they are one of the most influential metal bands ever. I wrote my own post here where I also expressed the idea that Electric Call Boy are not metal. You can take pop you can add distortion to it, you can put it through a blender if you want, but it will not turn pop into metal. Heavy metal is a sub-genre of rock. These guys aren't even a rock band.

I found you through your reactions to Ado and really love your videos. You genuinely seem to love and care about music and the feelings that are being carried with it. I recommend you to check out VORTEX by 白鲨JAWS sometime, I'd be really interested in your opinion about the song. ❤
