Hello! In today's video, I thought I would chat to you about what my Motability car means to me. To begin with, I do explain what Motability is, who can access it and I also talk through the process I went through to get my electric wheelchair and then my car.
I hope it will help people to understand Motability a bit more and to know how important the scheme is for a lot of disabled people. I also hope that, if you are currently looking at going through Motability for your own car, it might help you to hear about someone else's experiences with the scheme. Please do let me know if you have any questions, and I will try my best to answer them.
Please also let me know if there are any other videos you would like to see me do, either about disability/chronic illness or anything else. I'm always looking for ideas!

Sorry I've been so terrible at replying to comments on my videos the last few months - I'm trying to catch up now so I can then hopefully keep on top of them! Ah that's OK - thank you so much for watching it!

I understand where you’re coming from mentally speaking. I first applied for dla 5 or 6 years ago while I was working as a taxi driver, as I had extreme pain in my legs and back due to osteoarthritis, disc protrusion and rapidly degenerating hips, and explained on my application form that these pains were causing me to stumble or fall, not practical when your employment involves heavy lifting. I had a complete mental breakdown due to enduring such physical pain, and mental health staff in hospital advised me to apply for PIP. My doctor and a psychiatrist advised me to give up my job which I loved. I got higher rate PIP allowing me to sell my old Peugeot, and I got a seat Leon automatic, meaning I was able to include my son as a nominated driver on the insurance policy. He drives me around loads as we are like mates, not father and son! This has it’s advantages as our nearest proper hospital is 25 miles away. I’ve got my independence back but I’m constantly mindful that the DWP can stop PIP

Sorry I've been so terrible at replying to comments on my videos the last few months - I'm trying to catch up now so I can then hopefully keep on top of them! Thank you so much for your comment - it sounds like you've been through a lot and I'm really sorry to hear your health meant you had to give up your job. I'm really glad you were able to apply for PIP though and get a more suitable car for your needs. It's amazing how a car can have such an impact on our mental health, but that independence and freedom is so important, especially when your health isn't great. I hope you're doing as well as possible at the moment x

I’d be lost without mine. I’m currently driving a Ford Kuga, funnily enough! I’ve had a Motability car since 2007, after my lumbar fusion xxxxxxxxxx

If you have done under a certain mileage (I think it's 60000 in the 3 years) you can keep the car for another 2 years. I did that with my 1st motability car. Unfortunately the government took my motability car off me 2 years ago, even though I have hEDS, degenerative spinal problems & CFS. I was previously awarded the higher rate of DLA indefinitely but since they changed it to PIP I am now on the lower rate & get reassessed in 3 years time. I am fortunate that my parents helped me to get another car otherwise I would have lost my independence, not that I can go far or on my own thanks to my EDS. It has great features like a reversing camera, cruise control that also brakesfor you to keepyou a safe distance from the car in front, lane assist & blind spot warning which is fantastic as I struggle to turn my neck some days. Glad you have kept your benefit & are getting the most out of motability. I won't use them again unless I need major adaptations in the future as it was too stressful losing my car & at least the government can't take my car off me now as it's mine!

That's interesting to know thank you. I'll have to think about that when my renewal comes up. I'm so sorry to hear you've been let down so much by the system. It must have been awful having your car taken away like that, especially when nothing about your health had changed. That is something that does worry me, as they seem to be able to change their minds at any time, which is scary. I'm really glad your parents have been able to help you get another car though - it sounds amazing! I love the idea of a blind spot warning, as my car has a couple of blind spots and it scares me a bit that I can't see in those places. That's definitely good that at least your car is yours now and no-one can take it away from you! xx

No worries you are not alone, they have stopped my mothers PIP with knee replacement on left knee and other 6 undergo surgery on the right leg due to the accident and nerves are damaged already she has no control of her right leg at all, stage 4 COPD and dementia with memory impairment if we take her a few doors away she can not find our home t to come back.disgusting isn't to stop her pip ? well thats how those cowboys operate unfortunately assessor just lied and lied and lied and more lied on the assessment paper when we received the report from DWP i was in oar like i was presented in the room that day when did we said these thing my mother has dementia i am absolutely fine, long story short I did appealed to the tribunal we got there on the day clerk guided us to the court room 2 doctors and the judge on the panel. only thing judge said i am deeply sorry i have read your medical reports d.w.p puts their head under the snow I have no questions to ask you are entitle to enhance rates of daily living and motability ongoing
