I was an operations specialist from 79 to 83 on the USS John Hancock, a Spruance-class destroyer. We were "haze gray and underway". By the time I got out I'd visited over 30 countries. Then after I got out I spent five months goofing around Europe. Good times.

I currently want to be a mechanic... I also want to travel, see the ocean and just see the world, but I don’t quite now what job I want, so far I want to live the navy life, I want to hang out with friends, I want to laugh and have joy, what job should I get?

@@koobin7808 what you described at the end is very little of being a sailor, definitely there’s some times for it but probably not nearly what you think

When we got to Naples, we asked our Chief the best way to get to Rome etc. and some must visit places to see and he told us he had never done that...stationed in Naples for 2 years and had gone NOWHERE. We couldn't understand that. We saw more of Italy in our 2 week reserve duty than he had in his 2 years.

@@avendanomezarobertocarlos2992 I'm pretty sure you will be able to go overseas as long as you're on a ship, are trying to become an officer or just go enlisted? (It's been almost a year and you probably are already in the fleet, lol but I'm still curious)

I was Navy, transferred to Army, got stationed (overseas) on an Air Force Base -- which are only called Air Bases abroad -- and deployed with the Marines. I have seen a LOT after having been exposed to all of the different branches. Much of what he says in this video is spot-on. It genuinely isn't about the Rate so much as it is the billet. Furthermore, for those of you looking to go overseas --TRAVEL!! I was stationed in Italy and saw so many people whom only lived near the base so they could be close to it, rarely enveloped themselves in the local culture, hardly ever traveled, and just did the same things every weekend. Same bars with the same folks, for the same experience. Nothing wrong with that if it is your thing. But, I actually got out overseas and stayed here in Italy afterwards (and used my GI Bill to go to school in Rome, but that is a different story), and I still hear some of my old buddies complain that they regret not having traveled around. As for me, I loved to travel. From Russia, to Ibiza and London, it was a total blast. One final thought: USE RYANAIR OR EASYJET!

As an IT Naval Aircrewman I traveled so much more than any ship I was ever on, and I was on a bunch of ships. Nicky, I've been to everyone of the countries you mentioned as an fixed wing Naval Aircrew and a whole lot more in the Pacific arena. The problem about ships is this; the VAST amount of time spent AT SEA instead of port calls.

I would think that if you are on a SSBN you are not going to hitting any great ports. CVs I would imagine are somewhat limited in port calls as well. Not being on either of those we has some awesome port visits. Capri and Majorca for example. Correct me if I am wrong if you are a seabee your duty stations are sucky, so in that sense job will impact travel opportunities. Got a question: what is a rate that can billet to all the "communities" in the navy (nav air, surface, subsurface, amphib, mine warfare, seabee, legal, logistics, ,medical, marines, nav space [if it still exists], intell/crypto, special warfare, msc, oceanography/research/meterology, naval academy/training commands, etc Is there a rate which a sailor can work in his rate at any community. I am thinking HM because at any of these places there is probably a clinic or medical officer. Can you think of any other go-anywhere type rates?
