I don't consider Nixon to be a great orator, but he's by far my favorite president to hear in interviews. He was a phenomenal interviewee and a great writer. I think this is where the introvert in him excelled, opposed to speaking to crowds. Arguably the most thoughtful US president ever.

Richard Nixon is by far one of the most interesting US Presidents in my opinion. Usually people tend to focus on the Watergate scandal, which is an extremely important chapter of his political and even personal life, but Nixon has been far more than that. One thing to note about Eisenhower and Nixon is while he did give him many roles, especially foreign policy, Nixon was always kept in the dark to a certain extent. During Eisenhower's heart attack and other illnesses there was a soft power struggle between Nixon and Sherman Adams, his Chief of Staff, and other more wealthy Eastern Establishment Republicans, who mostly didn't like Nixon. And Eisenhower tried to push him off the ticket in 1956 subtly. I think they got along a lot better when David and Julie became a couple.

Bill Clinton also had a very interesting relationship with Nixon. In the early days of his presidency, Bill actually consulted Nixon fairly often as he worked to establish his administration, so Dick became something of a mentor to him. I'd also be intrigued to know whether or not Nixon ever met George HW Bush. Given that Nixon appointed him to be the ambassador to the UN, I'm sure he knew a thing or two about Bush 1 that might've been intriguing to know.

@@3dartistguy The guy almost got us into WW3 when he went after Castro, which was the real reason Khruschev planted those missiles in Cuba, messed up the Bay of Pigs invasion--he changed the landing site, and almost lost the confrontation between the US and the USSR in Berlin. It's really debatable if he actually was going to withdraw from Vietnam--even members of his own cabinet debated it, and his addiction to drugs "medicine" could really affected his decision making. Everyone keeps on forgotting that while Eisenhower introduced troops in Vietnam, JFK escalated it by sending in more troops and allowing American troops to act as soldiers instead of mere "advisors."

He had even had a close friendship with Donald Trump and had met Joe Biden, two men that would be elected to the high office beyond Nixon's lifetime! I'm not sure how close he was to the Bushes, I'm sure he was acquainted with George Sr. and had probably crossed paths with George W. at some point! I think Clinton had a great admiration for Nixon! this video is phenomenal. it really humanizes nixon. im a college student currently so i dont have any personal anecdotes from my experience living in that era, but the narrative i knew growing up was that nixon was a bitter, cold old man who, while not a bad president, was a bad person. those sentiments, while still partially true, are generally misnomers. he was so aware of himself and his mistakes. you can tell he genuinely cared for people and felt bad for his mistakes of the past. this video genuinely makes me feel bad for him. nowadays we have presidents committing felonies and getting away scot-free. if only people couldve appreciated him more back then. Really Outstanding video. I have been an admirer of Richard Nixon since I was about 14 years old, I am 44 now. I had the wonderful experience of Visiting the Nixon Library in 2008 and would love to visit again since their update and renovation a few years back. It was surreal to visit his boyhood home and visit the exhibits focused on Vietnam and of course his incredible foreign policy triumphs, which I believe that no president since his presidency have had. I will say I appreciate the unique perspective you gave between Nixon and Trump was spot on, I was aware of his writings and his nod from Pat Nixon through Richard Nixon to Run back in the 80's was ironic. The only comparison I can find with Nixon and Trump's Foreign Policy was North Korea, that was really something seeing President Trump Cross into North Korea. Both are flawed men, but there was no man in office who was not flawed. Always remember Nixon Now, more than Ever.

Nixon and LBJ both have similarities that they’re both coming from a not so fortunate background and elected to the highest office using only talents and grit. People only likes Kennedy but they seemed to forget that had he survived, he too will make difficult decision regarding Vietnam and the civil rights act would take longer to be pass as he doesn’t have LBJ’s ability to cajole congress.

I think with Nixon it is worth being cautious about believing a thing he ever said publically. A great example is his comments on Johnson - he talks about how johnson needed to he johnson, yet one of the biggest reasons Vietnam was prolongued (and why Johnson lost in 68) was that Nixon used his own back channels with Kissinger to tank peace talks. Johnson was planning to negotiate what Nixon ended up negotiating 5 years later despite nixon secretly promising a better deal which collapsed the peace talks in 67. Nixon was a deeply insecure man who would lie to maintain his image and using his words to paint his reputation is exactly what he wanted.

Great video! There are some articles that suggest that LBJ might have voted for Nixon over McGovern in 1972 because of their relationship, which is crazy!

Excellent video. As a teenager, negatively influenced by media, I wrote off RMN as a craven politician (and what's more, he chose a scoundrel for his VP). When I matured and gained more knowledge, my respect and admiration for him bourgeoned.

One of the greatest men as president. He was pretty average overall or mabye in the upper half but people unknowingly think he was bad just for Watergate.

Nixon was the first president I voted for. I still think he was a good president but a man of many contradictions. I found his phone call with Biden genuine showing the humanity of this man .

What a fine piece of work. Done fairly, and unbiased. I have seldom seen Nixon get a fair shake, he was a complex man, not the cartoon bad guy he is often made out to be. His many faults were covered, but not exclusive to his successes as well. You have earned my subscription, keep up the good work!

I was still in college when the watergate story hit the news media. a political science grad student was writing a research paper . She shared some antidotal research she discovered that Nixon was very paranoid that Ted Kennedy was going to step in at the last minute and claim the 1968 Democratic nomination. She also found later some circumstantial evidence that even after it was obvious that HHH was going to win the nomination after Ted Kennedy took himself out of the presidential nomination.. Nixon’s paranoia did not subside. He was aware that HHH was actively seeking having Ted Kennedy be his vice President …with the promise that he would resign after serving one term and allow Ted Kennedy to ascend to the presidency and he, Nixon would once again have the face the well oiled Kennedy family elective mechanism. Assuming the above was accurate, it’s interesting to consider that HHH maybe would have provided the campaign with the boost he need to defeat Nixon in the 1968 election. Does anybody on this channel have any confirmation evidence to validate the above? BTW.. I recently stumbled on this excellent channel and just subscribed. Thank you 🙏🏽🇺🇸

Nixon is one of the big boys of world history. And thus this Mr Dutre' and his need to understand the man is understood. Those who don't consider Nixon to be odd, like myself, probably would be called odd too. But the China and Russia trips probably postponed another world war for 50-years. And many of Nixon's calls have been impressively good ones. I think the world admires Mr Nixon's work more than does America. And many Americans who lean left only consider short-term solutions to long-term problems. So it is probably true that all the presidents mentioned in this video, save Nixon himself, proposed shorter-term solutions to problems of the world. RMN had the gift to see past his own century. And that is a rather rare ability.

Eisenhower wanted to campaign more vigorously for Nixon, but Nixon preferred to be viewed as standing on his own, and I also believe that perhaps Mamie did not want him to campaign very much.

Nison's sympathy call to Joe Biden was awkward. Why did he mention that he "understtod she was driving by herself"... weren't Biden's kids in the car as well? Did he mean to imply "You let a woman drive the car?"... if he didn't mean that, what did he mean? And then for him to focus on the fact that she was there for Biden's "victory" struck me as odd... I think Nixon just wasn't good at personal things like that

Nixon had some interesting ideas, such as his desire to switch to nuclear (imagine the US running on predominantly green energy, like France!) and his failed uniform changes with the White House guards.

Good job. FYI "America's Untold Stories" started a series on Teddy Kennedy's involvement in Watergate. Teddy and Nixon were at war with each other behind the scenes believing that there would be a face-off in 1968 or 1972.

I know that Richard Nixon was corrupt and broke the law, and history should (and has) held him to account for Watergate and the coverup. However, seeing Nixon speak in many ways kindly and always thoughtfully about many of his opponents like Jack Kennedy really humanizes Nixon. It is so sad that the partisan divide in the US has become so strong that opponents cannot make kind comments about others in this day and age as they used to be able to when my mother was growing up.
