At that point I had to choose AU or NZ citizenship, so did my sister. Because I was born here and live here, I obviously chose AU. My sister chose NZ. It hasn’t meant anything different for us other than we have different passports. I don’t think they do it anymore, I was born in the middle of the passport requirement/ no passport part. My mum came over during the no passport time. I don’t know how it worked, but I know she has an AU passport but was never naturalised… it’s so weird lol

That's not true, Australia and New Zealand both allow dual nationality. There's no requirement about choosing one nationality at 21,and only Australian citizens get Australian pasports ​@@MissAussieChick84

Think you will find there is also a "sign on" $ payment which is substantial.

Also, if you have overseas qualifications, begin the process of having those qualifications recognized by Australian authorities before even arriving here. Australian bureaucracies like those in most countries are notoriously slow, sometimes taking many months to be recognized, but you won't be employed unless your qualifications are to Australian standards and certified with the relevant trade or union associations. If those qualifications are not in English, I would suggest a translated copy certified by an official authority eg your local police or court officer et al. Another strategy ( and this worked for me when applying for work overseas, mainly the UK) is do the standard working holiday visa or even a tourist visa, and while here make those networking connections, and then go via the work sponsored route . letting your employer then do most of the paperwork. ( Hint: the process seems to go faster if during that process you are out of the country ( eg off to visit NZ, or lie on a beach in Thailand. That way. the authorities don't suspect you of just trying to extend your holiday in Australia. eg in reverse, after one year on a working holiday visa in the UK. I was too old to extend that, so I under advice from my employer, spent 3 months back home here in Cairns with my parents working on my sun tan at the nude beach...lol, while that process went through. Key thing is : you already have the job secured and they want you. I ended up with that employer offering me a 5 year contract to stay : I didn't accept that but did 2 years with them because I was not intending to live permanently there. They begged me, offered more money etc, but that was never my plan. I was craving the sun and the tropics and good fresh steaks and seafood. Also, check out the in demand jobs......there are heaps, not just needing tertiary or uni degrees. We are desperately short of tradespeople of all sorts : sparkies, chippies, plumbers, anyone with a heavy vehicle license, mechanics, , riggers , fifo mine workers including catering and cleaning in the mining camps....the money is very tempting there. ( yes they are wanting female drivers etc too) My flatmate, Dutch born Kiwi passport, spent 4 years trapped in Germany during the Covid drama does the FIFO in WA as a rigger. These demands are most sought for in the regional areas of all states, so please don't let yourselves be restricted to Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. Add to that, if you do come here on a holiday and see the opportunity, if your qualifications need tweeking or upgrading and it is more economic to study for those back home. do that and then go down the work sponsor route. Foreign student charges here in Australia as well as high cost of living makes studying here extremely challenging especially if you are reliant on low paid casual work eg hospitality or aged care. Greg is doing what he feels is right for him. Good on him. As we Australians say, "He's having a fair go of it." Everyone is different and on different life paths. Just do your homework and keep as many doors open as possible, be flexible and prepared to dump plan A for Plan B,C D, X as needed. Of course you might just then fall in love with a nice Aussie, then go down the partner route lol That is very common: the backpacker who came for a year and 10 years later, is married with 2 kids and worried about mortgages and school fees.

As you commented, try to get around and see as much of Australia as you can before deciding where you want to permanently live . @@gregjameson327 No, the rules for skilled worker visa (e.g. 190, 189, 491) apply to everyone, Brits do not get preferential treatment whether onshore or not. The rules around a WHV have recently changed for Brits due to a new trade agreement, but this is a temporary visa with max 3 years for those under 35. The descriptions on the immi website can be confusing though!

One reason, although there are many, and a simple interview would fine, and not requirement for a refugee visa. But it's really easy for anyone to apply for a temporary student visa, enrol for uni, and just pay for the first yr or a semester or whatever. And it's an illegal immigrant pathway for just enough money, add English test etc for a student coming from Liberia, easy pass, or not. Unfortunately its probably just geography

He applied online and when he got to Australian Immigration, he was interviewed only to discover that he had applied for the wrong visa and had the visa that allows a person to come into Australia to attend a business convention and discuss future prospects for setting up a business in Australia. You can’t work in Australia on that visa. He was returned home later that day, so he actually wasted his airfare, poor thing.

@@Jeni10 You need a Work Visa everywhere! That rule is called visa fraud and it's because so many people try to slip in to check out business opportunities, then stay or scam us! It has to be restricted, so he was interviewed! The rules are far harsher in Canada and America!

Introduce yourself at shops and businesses you frequent, even the staff at your doctor’s surgery. Once they recognise you as a regular, you can start a conversation about your potential future in Australia. This can get you nowhere or it can suddenly bring a new contact into your circle who knows a good pathway for you to try. Try to keep regular business with as many places as you can, even just as a friend. You never know when or where a door might open! If you believe in God, talk to Him every day, asking Him to guide you. 🙏😍

@@gregjameson327 It's looking after people with disabilities and they are funded by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) from Government funding. This includes people with physical and mental disabilities. I often see these NDIS workers out and about with their clients., doing activities, going to places, in a group. Of course their main priority is looking after their client's personal needs. There are different levels of certification.

@@gregjameson327 No, it's a carer position ie providing services to people with disabilities. It's called insurance but that just means that those who are eligible will get the support they require.

I haven't been making enough here at the moment for it to be an issue. But it will be interesting to see how things shake out for tax season next year^

@@gregjameson327 if/when you do move further south to use your professional skills and earn more 💴 it would definitely be a good idea to seek professional tax advice. Surely once tax is paid in Australia, the American tax would only apply to your after tax income. I know my daughter and her husband had no Australian tax liability when they lived and worked in the UK except on income derived from interest or investment, which didn’t reach a taxable amount in their cases.

I don't think it's a big issue but as you grow your wealth in Australia, get a house etc , the US taxes things that are zero tax in Australia. Your home could trigger American capital gains tax, for example but you have to have a high value of assets to trigger it I believe. But once you get older and an average house in Sydney goes over 2 million you might get a surprise from the IRS once you sell it !

Most of the "advantages" UK citizens have under the working holiday visa scheme are due to a recent trade agreement. How much of an advantage they really are is an interesting question. But it is certainly debatable whether the working holiday visa really is the "best" option if you plan to pursue permanent residence.

History counts. UK and NZ are brother nations, US close to. If there's an objective of keeping "the joint as white-anglo" that's failed since the Anglo-Celt (British/Irish) population recently went into minority in Australia (less than 50%).
