@@jsmith7888unless you have wrist flexing on the downswing. I have a flat wrist at the top and then my wrist bows even more at the ball, resulting in pulls. It’s almost impossible for me to hit a fade with my irons now. This drill he’s doing is good for people like me

I'm new and started playing a couple months and have been practicing on my swing nonstop and today at the range i just figured this out after trying so many different ways and i just tried it to see if i can go back farther on my swing and this has been helping me tremendously and my ball is going darther and farther everytime i go to the range

Great Chris, I never thought about wrist set for 35 years just inertial set or float load in transition I guess. But as I was approaching 60 I started to follow Mike Austin and his idea very similar except he used the middle 2 fingers of the right hand to lever the club against the butt of the hand. I not only gained 5 mph on the driver I hit it straighter and eliminated my pulls. I also actively release the club as well ala Mike Austin something I've never done until my mid 50's

Can’t wait to try this simple thought process next time I go to the range! What I’m used to doing is try to remember to keep my elbows from bending on the downswing at impact but it doesn’t always work. This tip, somehow, seems easier to manage and to keep my hands from swaying out!

Hogan suggested that in 1955, calling it a “waggle”. It appeared to be just a pre-shot exercise to test that grip was allowing free cocking up of the wrists (radial deviation) but if videos of his swing are watched frame-by-frame paying attention to the change in orientation of his hands they can be seen “waggling” down from radial deviation to ulnar deviation just before impact. I realized that about fifteen years ago when using Five Lessons to re-tool my swing from the start. One day when doing the waggle, lifting and dropping the club head back down with just my radial-to-ulnar deviation and extension in trail hand the club club head accidentally whacked the ball and flew about 30 yards dead straight. That made me realize how much acceleration allowing the club to snap down around the hands before impact can add to a swing. That’s when I downloaded and analyzed Hogan’s hand action and realized he was “waggling” the club head down with trail hand action very similar to that seen and felt when doing things like casting with a fishing rod, cracking a whip or hammering a nail. The other thing which will be noticed if waggling a club “thumbs down” into maxed out ulnar deviation using a Vardon grip is that wrists lock, making it difficult to move the hands except by moving them with the shoulders and arm triangle. I discovered by waggling down all the way to that point if it occurred during impact with the ball I could very predictably and repeatably square the face to the target as the ball released. What happens next after wrists locking down to square the face is the club force which is rotating club head around shaft wants to rotate the lead arm turning the club over which results in a snap-hook miss of the type Hogan was known to have. The technique needed to avoid that is the controlled lifting and turning of the back foot through impact which frees the hips and shoulders to turn through to the finish. The club face locks up in the hands as it picks up the ball and lifting the back heel at that point or slightly before keeps the hands moving around the feet preventing the force acting on the toe of the club to rotated the lead hand snapping the face closed. Why didn’t all golfers in Hogan’s era swing like that? The answer I think is a function of how the golf swing evolved from hitting the ball with thick wooden shafted clubs to thin Hickory shafts which would snap the shaft if swung with “whip cracking” wrist action into the ball. The conventional “club head lagging” swing developed in the 1900s with the Vardon grip always keeps the hands pulling the club head to avoid bending and breaking the shaft. That will also occur with metal and carbon shafts if the club is whipped down around the hands without lifting the back foot to keep the hands moving around the feet. I realized that because before learning to coordinate the lifting of my back foot with the locking up of the wrists through impact I snapped the heads off of several Drivers and irons because the club head accelerated around the hands so much bending the shaft forward to the point of failure at the hosel.

Great drill to show a one dimensional aspect to the vertical part of the wrist hinge, but if that was the only element to a wrist hinge the lead wrist would be very cupped at the top. How do you blend trail wrist extension into the movement? I need to feel more vertical hinge because I have to much trail wrist extension during takeaway which gets the club head behind my hands halfway back.
@pmoneyish6869

Are you sure you're not rolling your forearms to get that clubhead behind your hands? That's normally what causes that.
@SasquatchTour
@SasquatchTour Жыл бұрын
@@pmoneyish6869I'm referring to the clubhead orientation to hands which forearm roll does not affect. The clubhead can get behind the body with forearm roll and appear behind the hands in a 2D swing view depending on the camera angle but trail wrist extension moves the clubhead behind the wrist bones. My question is when does trail wrist extension begin.

Exactly my thoughts when I read your comment. I have recently adopted Mike Malaska’s advice on wrist movement- minimum wrist hinge with minimum forearm rotation. Only using extension and flexion with the wrists . Wow, what an amazing improvement with direction and power . I have wasted so much time incorporating wrist hinge into my swing when I never needed to . Wrist hinging requires perfect tIming using forearm rotation to square up the club face. Good luck with consistency using that method . I wish I had come across Mike Malaska’s advice sooner.
