Jesse Harris started his filmmaking career early, writing and directing his first feature when he was 17. He opted against college and used the money to fund his feature that he wrote and directed, which was eventually picked up for US theatrical distribution and by HBO Europe.
In 2007, to support other young filmmakers, Jesse founded NFFTY (National Film Festival for Talented Youth), which has grown into the largest and most prestigious youth film festival in the world. Jesse put his filmmaking career on hold for several years to support other young directors and build a premier showcase for aspiring directors.
Variety named Jesse one of 25 talents who transformed youth entertainment and was named one of City Arts Magazine's Top 50 Culture Makers. His feature was shortlisted for the 2004 Independent Spirit Awards 'Someone to Watch' Award and was one of 20 features invited to the 2004 IFP New York Film Market. Jesse's recently been named a Global Shaper, an initiative of the World Economic Forum, built around young entrepreneurs and do-gooders.
Jesse returned to filmmaking in the commercial world, now bringing years of experience crafting beautiful stories for brands. His commercial work has been seen on TV around the world, working with clients such as Volvo, Microsoft, Disney and more.
His 2018 short film, Wind in the Night was one of seven films selected for the 2019 Prix SNCF du Polar in France and picked up for distribution in France, Asia, UK and USA. The film was a proof of concept for his next feature, Borrego (available January 14, 2022).

Stuff we use:
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

"such an incredible thing I was able to put off at such a young age". And what did I learn? All it takes is a dream...and rich parents.

These conversations need to be highlighted more. As a screenwriter I see a plethora of “How to write….” videos but never any videos of how to sustain a career as a screenwriter/filmmaker. I just can’t afford to wait years in between projects. I have waaaay too many responsibilities.

Well for starters, many filmmakers don't approach it from the business aspect of things. I hear that some of these film schools don't even teach about that phase and if they do there isn't much discussion. Filmmakers seriously need to lay out a business plan if they want to do this long term. The allure of the struggling artist just isn't attractive to me at all.

I spent my life studying my passion of marine biology. Even then that didn't work out. My high school and college counselors would all say the same thing. Science degrees mean money!!!! You'll come out of college and employers will be after you!!!! You'll have a stable career!!! Well I have four science degrees and even then I realized that scientists and not excluded from the whims of the job market. Which is why I have debt and am now a housekeeper cleaning toilets for people that actually have careers. My advice, college is not evil but they will take your money no matter what. Want to be a lint historian. They'll teach you and send you on your ass into the world. Be careful on what you study and check to see if your profession and field is still viable and not on the way out. Lastly. Network your butts off!!!!! Science fields and others I assume are not really merit based as you will think. They are clubs and it helps to know people that can recommend you. Internship while you can and apprentice if possible. Know if the field is right for you before you commit and you become too old to work part time or worse. For free.

This is good advice but I'm struggling to make sense of how you have 4 STEM degrees and your cleaning toilets. That's definitely not typical. Where are you located? How often are you looking for jobs? If nothing else, you should be able to get a job at an aquarium or something. House keeping can make decent money, more than a remedial job at an aquarium, but at least then you have relevant experience and can rub shoulders and move up. But yes, the cliche we hear time and time again is absolutely true: it's who you know. So network.

and which is why after I graduate from film school, I'm gonna leave it all behind and carve a different career. Even my professors said the same thing, but if you're really passionate about filmmaking, then there's no harm in pursuing it. Just don't expect to get a lot of money.

Why would you do that? College is expensive, never give away $80,000 to a school and don't pursue the career. I spent $20 on chinese food and didn't like it but ate it all to not waste my money Always believe your movie will be successful.

Do you expect to make money back on your first, second or third film (or at least break even)?
@tygerbyrn
@tygerbyrn 2 жыл бұрын
Break even is my goal on my fourth/fifth film. Ditto on having marketing savvy and a modicum of business sense. “Talk the talk and walk the walk,” that sort of thing. My first exposure to the biz side of the business was when I sat in on some producer meetings. That was invaluable experience for me and I have taken those lessons with me on every project. Just because I can’t make all the mistakes. I might as well learn from the mistakes and errors of judgment from other filmmakers. Thanks again for a great video. Keep them coming!

As a screenwriter, if I'm ever lucky enough to sell a few specs or get assignment jobs, I'm not looking to make boat loads of cash. Enough to pay rent and buy the necessities (and books) is fine by me. I have no illusions I'll be the next Tarantino or Billy Wilder (not saying it can't happen, its just not my end goal) I just want to have enough to get by.

For me and my girlfriend as film majors (producer and production design), we aren't trying to earn money to live that rich life style. Buying mansions, super cars, 10 rolexes a month. I don't care about that lifestyle. I just want a decent amount where I have what my parents have. House, cars, rent, clothes, food, games/movies, and insurance. We both already know that we are not going to make a decent amount until like maybe the 4th movie we get
