I agree. I was always concerned with techniques, trying different picking methods 247 with my wrist, thumb exc then I heard Marco Sfogli say, technique this technique that just PLAY IT. Then it hit me , that guy is a great clean player and he doesn't give a damn . Alternate pick with a slant with the grip you like and play clean is the bottom line

I think a lot of the very top pickers internalise the technique since they've built it over so long. They don't really realise. Little things like changing attack angle etc that we might study in their playing, they 'just do'. So beginners get caught thinking they need to emulate, from the start, the subtle technique that comes much later. Saw an interview with Tony Rice where he was asked 'can you play that slowly and show me what you did?' He has a genuine moment of struggle lol slowing down was hard for him, and consciously thinking about his technique nearly threw him.

@@notmyname3681 I agree doing micro thumb pivots and stuff is really awkward especially when you're just getting good at pure wrist alternative picking . These little techniques will come as the core ones get better. The easier they become the more you can do . Also these fancy 👌 thumb techniques are optional. There's great alternative pickers like Andy James who use strictly wrist motions . Find what's comfortable and build up from there

Technique (how your fingers move), efficiency (how fast your fingers can get to the notes with least amount of effort), and rhythm are all important imo

Thank you for answering a question that I've had here lately about tremolo picking! I've been trying to work on my technique from how I hold the pic to whether or not to curl my fingers under or leave them straight out to how to tremolo pick just using my wrist or using my forearm. You really answered my question and showed me the answer in this little video so again thank you very much!

From what I've noticed from most really fast shredders, is to go with what works for you. As long as you can make really small movements, with the same pick attack (usually by locking your wrist) you should be able to play fast. It's kinda like watching the pros play golf. Many of them have different swings, but all can hit the ball a long way.

I keep hearing about how it looks in several different videos. Like... Are there guitarists out there that are overly concerned with what their picking hand looks like? If that's what you're worried about, you're focusing on the wrong thing.

It's not about how it looks, it's about how it works Smart guitarists worry for how long can they keep fast tempo, worry about synchronization and etc.

You play just like me fuck all the bullshit i know the speed and can feel the speed why would I have to sit there and practice something that I can naturally do fast all I can to do is do it as fast as possible in order to get good at it as fast as possible. If anything The most important thing about shredding is finger synchronization if you practice anything it should be that.

If there is zero wrist movement and you are moving the entire arm as one unit then that's not going to be good. It will eventually lead to injury. It's better to combine any forearm movement along with wrist movement

@Ben Higgins, that's a little ambiguous though. As your wrist is not a ball and socket joint, it really only moves forward/backwards, so it's actually your forearm that is moving whilst picking really fast. Your wrist is rotating but the joint itself is kind of "locked" (if that makes sense).

Maybe your picking hand doesn't need to be a ballerina, but your fretting hand needs to know how to do the Can-Can.
