NZ actually deported a group of 10 British tourists, including children, out of the country last year for littering, rude behaviour, and faking purchase quality (eg "I found hair in my food, I'm not paying"). In NZ you owe every stranger your respect up until they loose it, being rude right off the bat won't help you get your way it'll just get you into trouble.

Good list- a friend told me a story about not tipping in NZ. They left some money on their table as a tip, and another customer asked if they had left their money there by mistake/ lost it. Later, while walking away, the server ran after them with the money telling them they had accidentally left it there. My friend explained it was for her (the server) and she amiably joked in reply that "it's all good, I've already got a job, thanks". I love it. Kiwis are such nice people- I want to go to NZ at some stage!

I went tramping with randoms once as part of a tramping club, and two of them were from North America... We gave them standard club guidance on what to wear and pack etc. They wore jeans, didn't bring waterproof clothes, didn't put stuff in a drybag, and the worst part was mid-track, they were already walking ahead, when they decided to run off to the hut, and not tell the rest of the group. Consequently we had to go slower looking for them in the rain. Luckily we found them at the hut as we were about to have to walk back 2-3 hours to get reception to raise the alarm.

For having travelled here are my tips : 1) Speed cameras are hidden, there is no sign. I got a ticket (or my friend, as we were both driving and had no idea who drove it when we got flashed). Luckily it was only like 20 €, it would have been 8 times that in Australia 2) Protect yourselves against sandflies, especially on the West coast of the South Island. 3) Do mind wildlife on the beach. Seals and sealions may look peacefull but can charge 4) Keas are curious and thieves, they'll steal money, food, anything shiny, and will damage your car. 5) Plan for rain. It rains a lot in New Zealand, especially on the West and South coast, so you should plan for what to do in case it pours. 6) Food is often great, but don't expect meals after 9 pm. Like every English speaking nation, they eat around 6 pm. 7) The islands may seem small, but the roads are slow. So don't plan for touring the South Island in 10 days for example. Mountain roads are winding, it may take you an hour to do 50 km. Take your time. 8) The best stuff is often hidden. Don't stick only to the touristy spots. They can be crowded, and with the Lord of the Rings hype, many places are just as crowded as an American national park or a European city. Wake up early, plan for hikes, stay several days in the same area. Accommodation is cheap, so you can afford it.

As an Australian who spends quite a bit of time in NZ (I also work for NZ's largest company) I can understand why outsiders confuse Australia and New Zealand. To an untrained ear or someone not from either country, the accents do sound similar (think US/Canadian to an untrained ear). Also I would say that the non-indigeous culture is extremely similar (especially if you are from the country areas). What I would say is that new Zealanders are generally far more proud and/or patriotic than Australians and embrace the rural/remote areas far more than Australians do. They are generally more outdoorsy and adventurous too. Great video though, it's pretty much spot on! (except for wallabies, I have seen them in the forestry before!) Chur!

NZ does have a country wide frequent inter-regional and long distance bus/coach and sightseeing network that operates 140 daily services to 600 cities and towns, 12 national parks allowing you travel from the top of the North Island to the bottom of the South Island including ferry services between the North and South Islands. Traveling by bus, coach or scenic coach, is more environmentally friendly and safer than a car or campervan and in some cases it is quicker than traveling by car, at least you see the sights in stead of driving. To travel around NZ, the cheapest way is using a bus/ferry pass that is valid for 12 months and can be topped up as you travel. Remember NZ, is similar size to Japan and Italy and larger than the UK, making NZ bigger than it appears on a map. Nearly 60% of the country is made of hills and mountains which makes travel distance longer than what is shown a mobile app like Google Maps. etc, so traveling from Auckland to Queenstown can not be done in 1 to days. The minimum time is 3 days/2 nights (1 night stay in Wellington and 1 night stay in Christchurch) and with 3 half hour rest periods during the day. NZ is made of 15 unique geographical regions that has scenery and fauna that is not seen in other region/s, so it important to plan you stay in NZ important as there so much to see and do. NZ national road network is predominantly a 2 lane network which is sealed except for some small amount of regional roads which are not sealed. There are 4-6 lane highways around Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin only. There are no 4-6 lane highways linking the 6 major cities. Auckland is not the only city in NZ, there are 5 others being Christchurch (2nd largest), Wellington (3rd largest), Hamilton (4th largest), Dunedin (5th largest) and Tauranga (6th largest) and 9 other small regional cities. Queenstown is not a city but is a town. If you want to drive, remember the amount of CO2 emissions that you will be generating , drive for 5-6 hours per day between destinations at a mean average speed of 85kph (55 mph), to allow for sightseeing, traffic/weather conditions and rest. If you want to do a freedom camping tour, make sure you purchase or hire a vehicle that has its own ONBOARD toilet facility or stay at a registered gaming ground or backpacker hostels. The locals are NOT very happy about freedom campers using vehicles that DO NOT have an onboard toilet facility and pooing and weeing in native bush, etc when it suits them. Use registered camping grounds for toilet and hygiene functions. There are local free freedom camping sites but these a provide by local town, city and district councils at an expense to the local ratepayers expense and are available for a 1 night stay only. For further information on freedom camping in NZ - www.freedomcamping.org/ NZ wants responsible environmental friendly and sustainable tourism to keep NZ as an unique destination it is.

I watched your video just before leaving for a month in New Zealand, amazing advice ! As a French couple, the one that stuck most is the point on driving. I don't know who invented passing lanes and all those incentive to let others pass, but that's the best idea ever ! First, it made us so much more comfortable with driving, to have all those opportunities to let crazy locals go faster than us. But a week later, WE were the one angry with the tourists who never thought to let other pass, haha At least hearing about it before hand ensured that we were careful not to frustrate local drivers too long :D

I was standing on a street corner in Hollywood one NYE and I heard a familiar accent ask politely, “how do you catch a cab in this country?” When I asked them where in New Zealand they were from, they were floored, but I explained I had some very close kiwi friends. Then I found out the tourists were from Christchurch, where my friends are from. I asked if they knew my friends, and the woman scoffed, “you know, we don’t actually all know each other” right as her partner said, “wait, do you mean ______?” and called my friends by their Kiwi nicknames. So, I don’t know- in my experience you do all know each other! 😂😂😂😂😂

Fun fact: Nz is in the continent Oceania however is in a sub-continent called Zealandia (Ze-land-ia) which contains NZ and the other hundreds of smaller islands. Not many know that. Also about staying on tracks. All the time search teams are deployed to find people because they have gone off a track (most are tourists who aren’t prepared for nz) so stay on a track and if ur going for a long time hire a PLB so if u get lost u can activate that and get found! Better than dying like a lot of lost people in nz.

I would say you can get around here (NZ) without driving. The first time I came here (I'm a Canadian who now lives in NZ) I felt uncomfortable trying to drive on the opposite side of the road, so I just bused it and took some short haul flights. I also booked some tours that took me to specific places that are a little harder to get to (Hobbiton, Waitomo caves, etc.). It is doable, you just need to budget in more time. Even now after 5 years of driving, the really rural, winding, single lane roads freak me out a little!

Le rugby bien sûr (big big respect to the All Blacks !

Your advice of spending at least four weeks to see both North and South Island was very good. We spent 30 days last June-July in New Zealand and I think we covered the most of the best sights. I had been an exchange student in New Zealand for a year so I knew a lot about the country. But that was over 20 years ago and living in a family as a young adult is not the same as travelling with a family of your own. It was winter time so we didn't get to see the beaches etc. There was so much to see every day that I hadn't seen before, like Hamner Springs and Waiotapu. There were only two places I could remember from the last time I visited. My home town of Feilding (multiple winner of the most beautiful town in New Zealand) and what was the most beautiful city I had ever visited, Christchurch. Feilding was just as pretty as I remembered but I was sad to see what had happened to Christchurch (and only sadder what happened later). Still our vacation in New Zealand was the best we've ever had. Shotover Jet and skiing in Queenstown (during our summer vacation) were the highlights of your trip!
