As a rush Chair, my only advice is don't ever wear a double pocket button like the guy is wearing. Please

Just be yourself, don’t try to be someone your not. Integrity is key to fraternity, don’t to be fake, don’t try to be a frat star when you’re not, don’t put someone else down for the sake of boosting yourself up. Just be honest, open, and be willing to do stuff with some of the guys to get to know them. The best thing to be is honest and open, when I was rushing the frat I eventually joined had cigars and poker night. I had no idea how to play poker but I do like cigars and I had some Cubans that a brought to the event. I showed up and was honest that I didn’t know how to play poker, I didn’t pretend to be a poker star to try and impress them, I just told them I have no idea how to play. And guess what? I got into a long conversation with the guys on how to play and the strategies and everything and we bonded as a result. They were cool with me not knowing and took me in and explained everything. That’s how I knew these guys were cool and they respected me for being honest. Also the “cigars” everyone was smoking were mostly just blunts but I don’t smoke weed and I just said “fuck it I’ll smoke what I want to smoke” smoked my cigar instead and they respected it. If you don’t follow the wave and do your own thing that’s the best way to stand out.

Ima fact check this as a rush chair at a big frat at a big 10 school: 1. Talking about alcohol and partying- correct, don’t do it. Cringy af. It’s okay if they bring it up. 2. Honestly if u feel like a convo isn’t going anywhere ask about stuff from highschool. It’s not that bad. But you wanna use it to bring out a better topic. Like if he played football and you did to, start making connections on it. How good was he? How good were you? If you weren’t good sometimes it’s funny to say that, lol. Be honest and use highschool if necessary; they understand it’s where you’re just coming from. It’s all you know. 3. Those r good questions, but don’t ask why they joined that frat. It’s the same answer every time everywhere and it’s boring to answer. Literally ask stupid shit like why they jerk off if you two are having a good time. Don’t talk negative about anyone anytime unless it’s a celebrity. Even if they bring it up, even if they initiate the shit talk, take the high road. “Nah he’s chill” works. They’re going to have sorority girls there to ask you specifically fucked up questions, like “what position would you fuck me in?” or if there’s three girls “fuck, marry, kill and why?”. Don’t say “I gotta respect the girl, I’m not answering that”. Answer the question in a funny way. Go into detail about how long you’d last if they ask. Sorority girls want to know the guys joining the house are going to show them a good time, and even if that’s not sexual, the funnier the answer, the more likely you are to know how to have a good time. Sorority girls are always in the room when we’re picking who we’re offering bids to. Remember that. Even if you don’t come from partying hard or with a ton experience in the bed room, don’t be nervous. Tell them that. They wanna have fun corrupting kids. People will tell you it’s about being yourself; and that’s 100% true. But if you don’t exaggerate and hype yourself up, it ain’t gonna work.

I didn’t really have to try this hard when I went through rush. I was split for a few days but at the end when I knew what I wanted it felt like a natural conversation and it honestly felt like I knew all of them before that. In my opinion it’ll come naturally but the biggest advice I could have is… •Pay attention to your potential rush class •Take reputation with a grain of salt in some cases •don’t force the conversation •don’t talk down on other people/fraternities The biggest one… •DONT TELL LIES TO LOOK BETTER Rush shouldn’t be too stressful and honestly you only get one rush week so make the most out of it and have fun and meet new people.

I couldn't even say what my hobbies were but then I told the interviewer what music & TV shows I liked. I think I was afraid to tell my hobbies because I found out what kind of fraternity it was during rush, knew I wasn't athletic enough for a specific house and because I forgot to research the fraternities beforehand. I wish I've taken your advice on saying that I'm willing to learn whatever the chapter likes to do for fun, so a house can consider me for a bid.

I agree with you but after all of the knowledge that we give these young men, they seem to be bigger than the chapter; acting like after they go through weeks and weeks of pledging, they don't want to know more about their fraternity afterwards. Also I believe in "making the letters", and not letting those letters making you. I say these young men has long ways to go.
