One thing that really annoyed me about OITNB is that the guards watched the females shower. For one they stand outside theyre not allowed to watch even in max. Second ONLY FEMALE GUARDS ARE ALLOWED TO DO SHOWERS. If a male guard sees you naked or strip searches you the female inmate can have a PREA case. Which is the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) means to law enforcement preventing sexual assault and harassment of arrestees by employees and preventing sexual assault of arrestees by other arrestees. Which has been in effect since 2003.
@DaveMyDude
@DaveMyDude 5 жыл бұрын
I can only think of 2 times in the entire series where a male guard watched an inmate showering, the first being when Soso refused to shower and the guards forced her to, and the other was in the SHU. Both are somewhat explainable circumstances, to be fair.

I spent 11 days in a a florida jail for accidentally breaking a window and having the arresting officer say it was "criminal mischief". After my arraignment the court agreed to dismiss all charges because of how ludicrous the situation was but I never got that week and a half of my life compensated for and I lost my job. This was all so that they could make a few hundred dollars off of me in fees and manditory donations.

Yeah, a lot of people think that slavery is illegal in america, because no one ever bothers to properly read the 13th amendment. Or if they do read it, they stop abruptly after reading that "Slavery and involuntary servitude is abolished," completely ignoring the rest of the sentence that reads "excepting as a punishment for a crime of which the guilty party has been convicted." Now that's paraphrased slightly, but it's in no way misrepresentative. If you read the 13th amendment to the U.S. constitution, you can see for yourself that slavery is actually legal in the usa. If you've been convicted of a crime in the usa, it is perfectly legal for you to be condemned to slavery/ involuntary servitude. The usa is one of the only, maybe the ONLY advanced nation in the entire world where slavery is still legal!!!

while most of the abuse of power, sexual abuse and such is appalling. I don't see anything wrong with timing people shaving. I mean it is in no way a necessity or human right to shave ones legs. And at the end of the day that is a razor and people do hurt themselves and others with them. if they didn't check on an inmate and she killed herself and was just left bleeding for an hour then what?

@doornik1142
@doornik1142 6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, the problem with this video is it mixes in "stuff about prison life no one thinks about" with "moral outrage" arguments. Being unable to shave your legs regularly is inconvenient but not on the same level as being denied care for a yeast infection. And it leaves out some important context. For every prisoner who has to suffer a yeast infection, how many other stories are there of prisoners who actually do pretend to be sick in order to get out of work, annoy the guards, steal stuff from the medical wards, etc. They make it sound like it's just the guards being cruel, but that isn't always the case. I'd love to see some actual prison guards weigh in with the other side of the story.

She took a plea bargain. If she'd fought it in court, she almost certainly would have been able to get off. Still, though, that case probably shouldn't have even gone to trial. Her name is Marissa Alexander of Jacksonville, Fla. and she actually refused the plea deal; she went to trial thinking the jury would have some sense. The plea deal would only have given her three years. She had a protective order against her ex, but he wanted to hurt her for leaving him. And another important detail is that she had never been arrested before; this was her first charge.
@Rodrat
@Rodrat 7 жыл бұрын
The problem is warning shots are not considered self defense. That's misuse of a firearm at a minimum. Shooting the guy would have had a better outcome for her. Did she know where her warning shot would go? She could have shot someone else by mistake. That's super dangerous. There are lots of stories you can look up about people getting jail time for warning shots. You don't fire warning shots. You fire to kill and that's it.
@lrom5445
@lrom5445 7 жыл бұрын
+Dragonprincess21 Actually, she did take a plea bargain of three years time served. She originally went to trial. It got appealed on the grounds that the jury instructions were faulty. The jury is given instruction on how they should be ruling. In this case, the jury instructions were found to have shifted the burden of proof. I would fault the jury in this case, as they were given bad instructions. Firing a firearm in Florida outside of self defense has a 20 year minimum sentence. The problem is proving intent. The prosecutor had the burden to prove she wasn't shooting out of fear, but the jury was instructed in a way they thought the defense had to prove she was fearful. Intent has ambiguity, and makes it difficult. There were also two other people in the house. I think the 20 year min sentence laws are messed up. It leads to way over sentencing. She probably took the plea because if she to trial the prosecutor was going to charge her with 3 charges instead - upping the possible sentence to 60 years. It's a messed up way prosecutors have to threaten people. Works on people without super expensive lawyers that can eat up a prosecutor.

Alix T actually according to the Center of Disease Control condoms actually do prevent STDs but it doesn't prevent all STIs which (sexually transmitted illnesses.) STDs and STIs are two different things but they're in some ways similar. but condoms are about 99% effective of preventing any STD not all of them but you still should use them and getting tested months.

Condoms prevent STDs/STIs in lesbian sex? And I'm sure the prison guard who's raping you will wait a second to put on a rubber, though, a slightly smarter pervert would do that anyway (as depicted in Orange is the New Black).

When I said "birth control", I was referring to the pill (which does not protect from STDs or STIs), but like Jim Stanley said, even condoms should technically be a non-issue in women's facilities. Safe sex between women should involve things like dental dams, not condoms.

Lol Ive worked in prisons and jails for more than 6 years now, including a women's prison. The "source" in this video sounds legit in the things she describes. Some of these things did not happen in my facilities including the STD segregation or the stinginess on feminine pads. As for the video narrator, you lost any respect from me over the "type of man that becomes a prison guard" comment. 99% of prison guards do a thankless and dangerous job. They understand responsibility and workplace safety. It has been my experience that the small percentage of officers who cross the line with inmates lose all respect from their soon to be former co-workers. These are garbage people who betray their coworkers by putting themselves in a position to be blackmailed or by giving special privileges to certain inmates. These garbage officers literally make the workplace less safe for everyone and receive nothing but scorn from the other 99% of corrections officers. You'd be lucky to have friends or family that is the type of man or woman that becomes a prison guard.

Diego Brown That's pretty obvious, I think everyone has seen Narcos or heard of el Chapo and his great escape, at least. My point was more geared towards those who aren't cartel bosses with a large influence and reach in their home country. There are prisons in the south where people are forced to do for profit labor for pennies a day. Places where guards regularly beat, torment, and abuse prisoners they don't like, and get away with it because no one else wants the job. There are some dreadful prisons everywhere; including here, and I wouldn't be willing to wager that every single U.S. prison is better/safer/more humane than every prison in Mexico. Would you?

Marrisa fired a warning shot inches from her husband's head, with the bullet ricocheting into the ceiling, with her children in the same room. She claimed her husband was abusive, but as far as I'm aware that was never found to be true. Also, a warning shot was not legal at the time of her case, so she was sentenced. She refused a 3 year plea deal. Being threatened over text doesn't give you cause to fire a gun at someone. 20 years is harsh, but it's 20 years because "The law's name comes from three main mandatory sentences: 1) producing a firearm during the commission of certain felonies mandates at least a 10-year prison sentence; 2) firing one mandates at least a 20-year prison sentence; and 3) shooting someone mandates a minimum sentence of 25 years to life regardless of whether a victim is killed or simply injured. The maximum penalty is a life sentence unless the defendant is charged with felony murder or first degree murder in which case the maximum is the death penalty" A good lawyer would have informed her of this. With that being said, 20 years is harsh, but I still think she should have jail time. Also, verbal abuse doesn't give anyone the right to escalate it physically.

I would say guards were not a 'certain type' meaning they took the job to have sex with the inmates, almost every guard I met was ex-military making the transition from military to civilian formwork, but staying within the government. That being said, sex between inmates and guards does happen, and is probably the largest issue with women's prisons.

You could do one on mental institutions for teenagers. The truth really needs to be heard there. Because I've been to two, and one wasn't a real institution. The second one needs to be talked about. People will say: "Oh, you sent yourself there with your behavior" or "It couldn't have been that bad, they can't beat you and you get 3 meals a day". The three meals I can't argue but they could beat you and file that you attacked them and they defended themselves. I would happily talk about what I went through in there. Thankfully I was in there a little over 2 weeks because my parents fought tooth and nail to get me out after I told them what the inside was like. They don't want to talk about it now. I went two years ago and I remember it clear as day. That place, and others like it are not like the brochures and websites. Those are a public mask so they keep funding coming in.

But, instead, after all that hard work, you're suddenly faced with all the reasons you started using to begin with. Except now you're facing them sober, for first time in X amount of years. Getting clean is a great way to see what shambles your life is in, & to be intimately re-introduced to your demons. Which obviously doesn't sound encouraging. But, ya gotta recognize your issues before you can fix them. No one starts using because they're addicted; obviously. Yet, addiction & rehab centers nation-wide, focus almost exclusively on addiction, & do nothing to address the reason people need spent enough time using to build that addiction. It makes me crazy. Dual diagnosis places are half-way there. The thing they don't realize is that every addict qualifies as dual diagnosis: people don't use drugs to the point of addiction, unless something else is going on. & it's that something that needs to be addressed. But, I doubt that's the direction our current administration is going to take on the 'opioid epidemic'. Sorry for the preaching. I watch as many Cracked videos as I can find, & I have for years. But this is the first I couldn't help but comment on. It hit a nerve, in a good way. Wonderful job, Cracked!

A lot of this they actually got right like revenge searches and guard/prisioner relationships. I get why they glamorize love and sex, because if that show was any darker and they didn't give viewers in rays of sunshine it would be impossible to watch. With that being said, I hope that the system will at the very least start treating inmates like human beings.

Marissa Alexander shot at head range as her estranged husband was getting ready to leave his house with his kids. She went from the common area to her car to get her gun, came back in the house to give off her "warning shot." She claimed to fear for her life, yet didn't leave while she was at her car getting a gun.

04:40 they don't allow tampons and pads for many reasons. 1. Cook County had a series of floods from women stuffing hygiene products down the toilets and drains. 2. They are great for starting in fire, which caused Cook County prison to ration them. 3. They were being used as biological hazard weapons and women prisoners were attacking guards with used products. Some people are so broken that they need to be treated like dangerous animals and not sentient human beings. If you don't try to stuff your used tampon down a guards throat, they'll be more likely to let you have tampons.

This is horrible. Cracked I expect better. If this was a opinion piece that wanted to expose the injustices and plight of women in prison it failed. If it wanted to elucidate a single point to take away from this to ponder it failed. If it wanted to look like something that an eighth grader put together over a week of lunch periods, then it succeeded. The production values of this were very subpar, from the echoes in the recording of its "source" to its random footage of fake and real prisons. The succession of images was only barely tied to the narrative, with long stretches of I can only assume prison breaks with women running through halls. Lets start at the beginning. Prison Sex -its against the rules but it happens, so we should accept it, is not an argument although this video seems to assert that. Next, Prison guards - "70% of women prison guards are men, the kind of men who become prison guards." What on earth is this supposed to mean? Is it meant to imply that men who seek to become prison guards are somehow deviants or misogynists? The tone of the narrator seems to be trying to lead to that. If not, then again I ask what? and if so way to smear a large section of people without facts or prior knowledge. I will acknowledge that there are abuses of power, but I would say the exception proves the rule unless you have access to data that shows otherwise. Feminine Hygiene products - How about some editing? Your double entendre "mistake" should have been edited out whether you meant it or not, because it was juvenile and totally went against the whole tone I thought you were trying to set with the narrator format. The security of tampons and such is the same for everything. Razor - pass Sickness and Pregnant - This is what made me make this whole paragraph. You boldtype assertion is that they don't get help when sick or pregnant, then you give two stories that not only do not make your point they actually contradict it! First story, most insurances only cover 1 gynecological visit per year, which is the recommended frequency for women. Why would women in prison need more? The story then says if you went and TOLD someone that you had a problem, you got treatment, but then the source complained that they would have to KEEP going to KEEP getting treatment. How else would you go about that? The next sentence implies that the inmates are relieved of work duties FOR A YEAST INFECTION. I don't know of a woman outside of prison that gets a sick day for that. Finally, the pregnant woman. She was spotting and they put her on bad rest. That is the thing to do if you are trying to keep her from going into labor. Letting her go about her business would likely decrease the time until labor. There is basically nothing else to be done. So the statement that the source gave of complications AS A RESULT of not getting care is undeniably false, unless there are other factors not given in the story. In both stories, care was given, so the whole premise of being left out in the cold is wrong, even as presented by this video. In conclusion, this video is terrible in production values, execution, and coherence of message. This feels like it was slapped together to fill some sort of quota for the maker. Even if you have an agenda you want to tout, your should actually bolster your suppositions, not contradict them.

Oh and as for tampons it might not just be about hording it's more than likely been used to make a shank or other contraband material, there are rules for a reason and just because you personally have never been doesn't mean you can't use common sense to figure it out

John Smith what do you think tampons are made out of? I mean if they had plastic applicators you could probably make a shank out of that but if you distributed tampons with cardboard applicators then there's virtually no way someone could use a tampon as a weapon.

Panzar General ppl on writs in concord, nc get put on the "crazy" block bc there's really no other place to put them. The disableds, sicks, & writs. They only gave us razors when they felt like it. Which was hardly ever. Traveling to my "home" county was like a vacation. They/ we have "real" food. Real fattening. But real food...But I met some characters, for sure. ... some of em were funny... Like Crazy! But Funny. That's only bc we were locked up 20 hrs throughout our days tho... & they were at a distance. This poor mental old lady like lived there bc I guess she's just that lone survivor... But really F`n mental. She said she'd always send me money when she got out. I knew she wouldnt, she's off. But I just went w/ it. That's a nicer story tho. She was always singing random church songs no matter what the time. Even if someone was having some hype breakdown. She'd still be randomly singing over the person. It was funny. P'll were always telling her to shut up. Then she's be going off on the church laides. Sometimes they didn't want to visit bc of her. Sometimes I caught her twerking on other old folks. Then just casually walk away dead serious. Like she really didn't just get done twerking on them. Good times. Not

01:45 "The kind of men who become prison guards" that's some top shelf stereo typing. Do you have any other gems to share with us? "the type of men/women who sale drugs", "the type of men/women who would have a sexual relationship with a fellow inmate for financial gain", or how about "the type of men/women who uses broad brush strokes over sad music to type cast large and diverse groups of individuals"

Ryan Acorn I do believe a majority of men who want to become cops specifically in female prisons are potential predators, and should be regarded with suspicion. They are going out of their way to be in a position where they have power over women they can use to their advantage. Not to say that every single one is some sort of rapist, but they should all be regarded with suspicion. As made clear in the video, there are female guards who need to be regarded the same way. Do not derail this from the issues at hand because "not ALL men!!". That's ridiculous.
@ryanacorn5367
@ryanacorn5367 7 жыл бұрын
punkisead I respectfully disagree with just about everything you said. First off this video isn't even 9min long, it's not an in-depth hard hitting editorial but an opinion piece. To say it made anything "clear" is a bit of a reach.Two the disparity in the gender equality of guards is not because men overwhelming seek the job, but that women avoid it like the plague. Three guard is, all things considered, a good carrier option for unskilled workers as it pays well, offers health and dental benefits, and despite the out cry prisons don't seem to going anywhere so there's job security. To the point that I am not permitted to say "not ALL" I'll try a different road. Just a few Muslims are terrorists. Just a few leftists are communists. Just a few right wingers are racists. Just a few feminists are misandrist, and just a few MGTOWs misogynists. See if all thats talk about are the flawed ones the uninformed can get the wrong idea about the whole group. Of curse there are some bad men, maybe even a few bad women, but to out right say "the kind of man who becomes a prison guard" is a gross mischaracterization of people who are making an honest living. You are however fully entitled to think I'm full of shit and disagree with me.

Ryan Acorn I wouldn't say you're full of shit, I see your point of view, and understand. I just happen to personally be a suspicious person, and I am concerned that these women in prisons ( men in prisons as well, actually ) are put in these positions where they can be used.

I replied to this same question somewhere else in the comments but here: It's a habit thing. When I was in bmt (basic mil training) girls were still doing that shit and we only had 15 minutes for 58 girls to shower with 7 working shower heads. Some got good at it and others gave up after a while, but some people just cant let go of societal beauty standards even when it doesn't have any true benefit other than making them feel normal.

So we pay more to make them pretty but will not stop the rape? If rape is a requirement of prison it should only be done by the prison guard or it could be a new job we create. It has lots of ugly bitches in there and they would not be shaving, I would not want that job.
