Gastroparesis is a debilitating digestive condition that medical experts are learning more and more about each year. That's why The American College of Gastroenterology recently updated it's clinical guideline for Gastroparesis. Joining us are co-authors of the guideline, leading Gastroenterologists Dr. Linda Nguyen and Dr. Michael Camilleri to give us a deeper understanding of what the updates mean for patients and providers, how they and their fellow co-authors arrived at these clinical updates, and why they're optimistic about further studies that they hope will lead to better treatment options for patients.

My daughter has been suffering this for the past 2 years. She has lost so much weight and looks so frail. Wish there was more that will help.

Thank you so very much for helping with awareness!! 🙏💜🦋 My GP is mostly debilitating PAIN. Most GI docs won’t address that because either they don’t believe you or they don’t know what to do. Suffering every day with this is very depressing and isolating because a lot of us “look fine” Believe me there are a lot of GP WARRIORS who get good at ACTING FINE as we don’t want sympathy or it’s not socially acceptable to act in pain so we stay home. We miss out on living life and time with our loved ones. I hope some ER docs watch this! Thank you again so much!! 🙏🦋🌺

The pain is real. I’m in constant abdominal pain, no energy. I had all the symptoms and the endoscopy revealed hernia and delayed emptying. They thought it was IBS for the longest

Ive had chest pain, stomach pain. Nausea and acid reflux. My first upper Gi done, my food was not digestive and i was sent for 4 hour emptying test. So i was diagnosed with gastroparesis. Gerd on june 2023. Diagnosed with hital hernia and acid refux & fatty liver disease on dec 2015. Dignosed on March 2001/Mentsl health issue ( bipolar, depression and anxiety ) after losing my twin sister.

People with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome have gastroparesis too and intestinal motility issues. my gi follow up with the APRN is Thursday.I did a smart pill test in dec 2018 ,

I was diagnosed this past May after a barrage of test. When I went to the ER the first time I was telling them I can’t eat. I was 80lbs heavier than I am today. I felt like they looked at me and my weight and thought well she is eating something. Then 3 weeks and 25lb weight loss, 3 eER visits they finally believed me. It’s a miserable life. I have been referred to Wake Forest as my GI says they have done all for me that they know to do. I’m still loosing weight but not as bad. Some days I can barely hold my head up because of the nausea and vomiting. I wear a scopolamine patch and Zofran daily.

I have had gastroparesis for 34 years. I was curious about this video because I wanted to see what is new in gastroparesis treatment. Not much has changed, but the best change is having a wireless pill instead of tubes and wires used in the motility study. Over 32 years ago, Dr. Camilleri was one of my consultant doctors at Mayo Clinic, where I had my 2nd stomach surgery. That surgery probably saved my life. I’ve learned a lot since then. I stay away from the “recommended” drugs. Most pro kinetic drugs are dopamine antagonists. We need dopamine, so that is a bad side effect. Most antiemetic drugs are anticholinergic. Our brains really need choline, so that is also a bad side effect. I had my pyloris valve removed, and had horrible dumping syndrome for many years. I still get it occasionally, but less and less over the years. I assume having a pyloris valve permanently opened will do the same thing. GastroCardiac syndrome, aka Roemheld Syndrome is real. Basically, the symptoms of gastroparesis affects the heart. The key is the vagus nerve innervates both the GI tract, the heart, and every other major organ, but the GI tract and heart are in close physical proximity to each other. Malnutrition is a constant threat. Maintaining minerals, electrolytes and trace minerals is very important. I found out the hard way. I could write so much more, but I’ll stop here.

I have moderate Gastroparesis, paraesophageal hiatal hernia, Tortuous Esophagus, IBS, other hernia, GERD. The GP is the worst pain of all. And Ive got Fibro, RA, Severe Osteoarthritis, DJD, DDD, many ruptured discs throughout my spine, severe spinal stenosis, bone spurs in all my joint, my heels, bilateral hip bursitis and more!! GP is no mild disease!!!

Great comment about the “approved” medication. It absolutely does not work for me. My gastroenterologist has prescribed a medication I must get out of country. It works great. It has not caused ANY adverse side effects. I also have used vagus nerve therapy. I do believe it has made a huge difference.

My wife has gastroparesis very severe she has had every test several surgical procedures tried all medications from Regalin to Domperdone she currently has a stimulator for the last 4 years nothing has helped . She can take a sip of water and throw up for hours or burb uncontrollable for hours a single bite of food she throws up foam bile and blood smells make her nausea as well. The only real nutrition she gets is from BAI Coconut water which she drinks on the average of on a good day maybe 30 ounces. She is falling a lot due to dehydration and lack of food. The doctor said next step is to remove her stomach which is only a 50 percent chance it will work. She also has Fibromyalgia real bad as well. She has the bloating Nausea vomiting every day multiple times. One doctor told us its a problem with vagus nerve and she could of had this from birth. Slowly watching her die a little more each day.

Brother, I am so sorry to hear your story. It is a very similar story with my wife. She has been like this for 12 years and we only just got the diagnosis of gastroperesis a few days ago. I’m with you in your corner. Don’t give up. Keep being the rock she needs you to be. Take time to cry if you need to. I understand. God bless you.

Maybe she can try-out tubefeeding? I have this now for 12 weeks. Its called gastric rest, where you cannot eat anything. Hopes is after 12 weeks the gastropareses is a bit mild...i do hope so, otherwise i need tubefeeding for the rest of my life. Not eating is no fun at all, but almost no pain.

I was able to get off diabetic insulin ,watching what I ate strictly Ketovore diet ,I was diagnosed with Gastroparesis 6 months later . Messed up my blood sugars bad. I am back on the diet mainly too because I feel better all over my body except for the pain ,that just won’t stop yet ,maybe when I get it under better control ,Gastroparesis is Horrible ! Of course all my DRs are men ..LOL

I m 65 yrs old had gb taken out 3/17/20.. I have a hiatal hernia and had some gastris. I have had constant upper burning and tighness in chest. Ive lost 45 pds. Went to 5 Gi doc all test normal from ct, mri, stool test, blood test, all scope work from mouth to butt. Pain dr put me on deloxitin 40. I was on Lyrica but got off it. I've have anxiety due to having pain so long. 5th Gi finally thinks I have bile acid and put me on powder just started it on 3rd day. Do you think mirtazpine and busburon would be better. This pain is all the time and gets worse after eating. Deloxitine is not doing very much.Do you think ultra sound like for Parkinson's tremors some day can get rid of this?

The Mayo clinic might be interested in me, I suffered a series of unfortunate evem66 I 'm suffering severe neck pain from what was severe damage 10 year ago that has gone untreated for 10 years..I know its bad, the damage to my C5-C6 and C6-C7 was shocking 10 years ago, currently, I'm lucky to have 20% use of it, I also have SCS Paddle style at an interesting Thorasic spinal intersection. I remember a setting that cause my gastrointestinal system to become upset I need to ask my doctor I need a new battery and since I know SCS's paddle lamenectomy I'm a great candidate I know what is specific to this stimulator. OR maybe it just happens tobe placed there PRIOR to any diagnosis of Gastropharisis..but wait there is more, my lower spine is really a mess, PS Nope no Type 1 Type 2 or Pre type 2 diabetes...I believe we are about to find many who were injured in "interesting & unfornuatuatly injured" ...ISometimes wg get the GP attacks I swallowed 10mg THC gummy and as long as the SIBO is not to the gastritis colitis infection level I was able to get it to relax to stop... please forgive my ignorance I'm having to "Figure this it out yourself" something has gone dangerousely deadly in the California Medicare system you will have a lot of GP due to service related injuries or the treatment which were opioid which can cause opioiid induced GP. IDK solong trying to figure it out 2 days ago it hasn't hit me just MAKE IT STOP lol

I had a hiatal hernia with no SX before the sleeve procedure, the hernia was repaired with sleeve but from all the vomiting, repair failed. I had trouble for 2 yrs with eating, the feelings of dumping,of vomiting and The slightest burp or gas made me so sick diarrhea attack feeling pain. intervals of small episodes to big episodes of after hours of pain n vomiting dehydration, it’s to the ER. I was to thin, it was exhausting. I also notice that if I don’t poop everyday then I can’t eat. The 3rd yr of sleeve i had my stomach issues in control I was eating everything and gained healthy weight back had few episodes but small and then it came back and they said it’s my gallbladder and after that surgery my stomach issues are back had few ER episodes and now I’m just suffering with never knowing when my stomach going to act up. I’m back to eating as if I just had the sleeve done, softer foods small frequent meals and pooping daily is a must. Ive read so much I believe I have this gastroparesis. I feel something else is wrong I can feel my food not digesting well.

Omg. I am the same, and I have been diagnosed with GP last year. But my specialist said mine was caused by anxiety and low magnesium and not my hernia surgery! But I don’t agree totally.
