What Pig Breeds To Raise

I have organized my farm information and resources on my website: farmmarketingsolutions.com/re...
I am raising pigs that are landrace, yorkshire, chester white crosses. In the past they have been a good cross for me to raise and have done well for my farm.
What breed you choose will be based on a number of factors that I mention in the video. At the end of the day you will do what is best for you in your situation. I have found that much of the skill of farming comes from taking the "known" information and then adapting it to the specific needs of your farm.

great video...suggestion from raising pigs for 12 years...if you have a problem with the pigs flipping their feed pans cut a plywood square say 2x2 or 3x3 and screw the pan to the plywood so that when they are eating theyre standing on the plywood and it prevents them from flipping it...keep up the good work

I get a $25 impulsive buy per weekly paycheck and today I spent it on one of your coffee mugs with the chickens on it. Now as soon as you get in matching mug with pigs on it, I will be such a happy wannabe farmer. I'm glad you have as much fun filming and hanging with your pigs a I have each morning starting my day watching these videos. Thank you to you, your family and staff for sharing your world with city folk like myself. ~Smile!

Years ago I worked at a swine research farm. The Yorks and Landrace were crossed to make a two-way cross for the female side and the Duroc and Hampshire were crossed for the male side. These two, two-way crosses were then sold to farmers to breed to make a four-way cross for the optimal market pig. We had great back fat numbers and good rate of growth to feed consumption.

Our family raised Hampshire-Duroc crosses for 10 years with a Hampshire Boar. We raised about 400 feeder pigs a year and sold them to the Jimmy Dean plant in Plainvview, TX. They were super gentle and easy to raise. The sows averaged 12 pigs to a litter. One of the sows had a large litter and did not have enough tits to feed the babies. One of the babies would leave the stall and go over to the sow in the next stall to nurse. When he was full he would climb back in with his litter mates until time to nurse again. They were nice and long with great hams on them. The one key thing to raising nice clean healthy hogs is fresh clean water. One of the inspectors at the Jimmy Dean plant told my dad that our hogs were the only ones he had seen with clean livers. My mom and I cleaned the water troughs twice a day without fail. We raised them on wheat or rye pasture and my dad custom mixed and ground their feed every week. The pigs were on self-feeders and open pasture. The meat, bacon, ham and sausage was unbelievable. I have never tasted anything like it before or since then.

Here in Sweden (where we have one of the highest average growth/day in the world) the standard breed is Yorkshire+landrace x Hampshire or Duroc. The sows are the familiar Yorkshire/landrace cross and the boars are either Hampshire or Duroc, dedicated meat breeds. Don't know anything about Chester White, but it they have similar characteristics to Duroc and Hampshire they're probably pretty much optimal for conventional production. Pastured production may prove to be a different matter, but for now that production model is so small that it's probably not worth it to try and engineer a dedicated pasture-pig breed.

Can you tell me anything about the temperament of purebred Landraces? I just got one that seems very aggressive and she's only a couple months old. Got her to breed with a Purebred Chester White. Hoping for some great F1 breeding boars as well as gilts from her. But if a nasty temperament is normal for them I don't know if I'll get very many more.

We raise pigs on pasture for a local restaurant. The chef prefers Bershire for the marbling in the meat and the meat is a darker pink (red). In the past we have raised blue butts, (yorkshire, hampshire crosses) for the hybrid vigor. When raising for commercial use, you have to go through a usda facility for processing.

Just an observation from my experience, 3 pigs are the ideal number for an enclosure. competition for food is optimized, not prohibited by increased numbers. When you have multiple 75 lb young pigs sleeping in a pig pile, there can be injuries. I've seen a few prolapses (anus detaches and intestines pop out) from being the unfortunate bottom pig. good luck !

I don't like pigs (I just can't love a pig) but I DO love bacon and ham and sausage and...etc etc. :0) Because of our love of all things hammy, we are looking into pigs as the next animal to add to our homestead and this looks like a really good breed. I appreciate the explanation. Do you have any input as far as taste/quality compared to other breeds? A friend of ours raises Kune Kune and said the taste is amazing, BUT they are really slow growers and generally small.

This may sound like a weird question, but why aren't pigs milked for milk? Is it because it is just inefficient, or does it taste bad?
@pessimisticpantomath9827
@pessimisticpantomath9827 6 жыл бұрын
The milk is very hard to obtain. Sows are naturally very aggressive when lactating, and even if you do manage to get some, you only get a little bit of milk. It does have good flavor, but I wouldn’t say it’s better than goat milk. It has more fat content than cow milk and is more runny and watery.

I know this is an older video but I hope you (or another person who is also experienced) see this. My husband and I are thinking about raising two pigs for meat and I am almost already sold on these even though this is only about the 3rd video I've watched regarding raising pigs. I have a couple of questions that I hope you or someone can help me with. 1) Are all pigs that are raised for meat taken to process at around 7 months or so? 2.) What weight are these particular breed when they are taken to process? (The idea of lots of bacon is a super big plus for me. LOL!) 3.) Do these root a lot or not much? (I have an area in my yard that I would love to have cleaned up so that's a consideration for me.) 4.) I live in a subdivision so I'm worried about smell and noise. Are these relatively quiet piggies? How hard is it to keep smell down? 5.) Are these trainable on electric fencing? 6.) Is this breed friendly enough to spend time with while they are growing? I'm sorry for so many questions. I'm just the kind of person to ask a lot and learn a lot before making a decision when it comes to animals. It took me nearly a year to decide to get some chickens and now that I have them, it was the best decision I have made for my first livestock purchase. I'm even becoming a member of the chicken math family. I have 9 RIR hens, and 1 RIR roo. I just ordered 4 Buff Orpingtons in hopes of eventually getting broody girls for natural incubation. I'm also trying to convince my husband to start looking at land out in the country.... because agricultural/homesteading life appeals soooooooooo much to me! Thank you so much for the helpful video! Your piggies are soooooooooooo adorable! I want to hold one and love on it. LOL!!!

I had a female piglet that was dropped off at my door years ago when the owners bought her at an auction and because they lived in town, city made them get rid of her. When I got her, her dried umbilical cord was still on her belly button. She had pink skin and white hair. Her ears were so big, that she had to flip her head up to lift the ears to see me. I believe she was a Landrace. Can you please confirm based on my description? My old neighbor poured antifreeze into her water bucket to kill her. Which they did. I miss her so much and would like to get another pig of her breed
