Over the years there has been a big debate over what powers the golf swing. Some say it's the arms, while others say it's the body. Hopefully this tip finally puts this to rest.
Why it's so important that you know what powers the golf swing is because it will determine your understanding of the swing and what you are even working on in your own swing. If you think it's the arms, you will neglect the body. If you think it's the body, you will neglect the arms.
After watching this tip it should become clear that you need to work on both parts of your swing to get power. For some getting more distance and clubhead speed it difficult. Typically this is because they don't understand how the golf swing works, they are working on too many things or the wrong things.
Just realize that anyone can get more clubhead speed resulting in more distance if you understand it and work on the pieces. Keep it simple and you will gain more power in no time.

After watching Paul’s video’s on KZfaq my game has improved significantly. I broke 90 for the first time in my life and just to “pay him back” I bought the body swing book and video series which is extremely helpful. One of the best things about Paul’s concepts is that they are simple and repeatable for guys like me who can’t practice that much and play once week (but I do swing my clubs every day now thanks to Paul’s advice). Another big difference for me now is that I understand the concepts that are causing poor shots instead of having a terrible round because I’m constantly hooking the ball, I’m able to make adjustments based on the ball flight by going back to the basics from the body swing (usually I have to “turn off my arms” and then I’m back in the fairway)

So glad you are doing well. Thank you so much for your support. I truly appreciate it. Simple is the key for sure. Also, you can literally learn this stuff just by doing practice swings at home. I have known people were busy and getting busier back in 1991 when I first started teaching. Knowing this allowed me to think about positions/movements people can easily do and repeat on their own. Isn't that the whole point. You need to do it without me. Sounds like you are on track so keep doing what you are doing. Be sure to do daily practice swings so you aren't leaving too much time in between practice sessions.

paul seems like a cool dude, you're the only guy i'll listen to now! just started playing golf at 35 and everyone is telling me keep my arm perfectly straight and I couldn't do it. uncomfortable, stiff and slicing on the fairway the next town over.... funny enough when I did your hinge drill with the upside down club it changed my grip which in turn gave me good wrist hinge and now my arm is actually closer to straight without me even trying. I was so tense before lol you make golf more fluid and natural thanks alot!

After watching your videos about the body swing I took your teaching to the course today. I focused on loose wrists, feeling the weight of the club and letting my body lead the swing, and just keeping it simple and easy just as you demonstrated. It took almost no effort. I went from hitting my driver 125 yards to hitting it 165 yards! I know that is not terribly far but today was the first time I have ever played 18 holes. I have played 9 hole about 6 times since I started playing in May. Your body swing technique works beautifully with simple and easy physical movement. I am 66 years young and you have helped me enjoy golf so very much. Thank you, Paul.

Any time you lose it slow down. Get step 1 - release. Roll it from the top and get every ball hooking on purpose. At this point you know what you are going to do before you do it. You are doing half right. You are on the wrong direction though so at this point you start adding more and more body until you hit it dead straight (step 2). Most people want everything at once so they get nothing.

I am 69 years young, shooting mid to low 90s, plus am truly enjoying playing decent again, not embarrassing myself. Being a lefty, I have recently developed a very sore inner left knee. Glad you did and are doing well. I love hearing it. Hmmm, inner left need for a lefty. Are you too flat footed as you are swinging through impact? In no way should this be hurting. Kind of a strange one as I don't know if I have heard anyone mention that knee pain before. I would think you are flat footed and rotation which is stretching it. Video your swing and check impact. My back heel is off the ground 3-4 inches with irons and 5-6 inched with driver. Hi Paul - I have been practicing the body swing religiously and told you about my experience at the golf course yesterday. For some reason, the way you worded this tip really clicked for me when you stated it is the arms AND the body - keeping wrists very loose, but also not just having the arms lifeless. It was interesting yesterday on the course when I was doing the 50% body swing like you suggested - I would keep having a mental block whenever I would land an approach shot on the green or when I would land my drive straight down the fairway - I would think, "Dan, you don't do ths. You have never done this consistently." Then my confidence would waiver even though I had a great deal of consistency when I did the 50% body swing correctly. I am going to listen to the "Mental Game" section of the Ignition Golf series I purchased in my package from you. Thank you for this great tip, as it truly gave me an "a-ha" moment!

@@paulwilsongolf I just wanted to encourage folks to invest in your Ignition Golf series as part of your entire package. I listened to several of the mental game tips that are there and they were spot on for just what I needed! I will keep up my discipline and work on the Body Swing on a daily basis and then put the various pieces together. I know I will eventually be able to hit longer and straighter shots - it is just going to take some time. I suppose seeing one of the guys I referenced above actually drive the green on two Par 4 holes was fairly incredible to me. But as I reflect back, he was probably around 6' 4" and could generate incredible club head speed as a result (I'm just guessing taller folks can do that more easily). However, his pitch shots were terrible because he was just taking practice swings to guess how far to hit the shot. Whereas, my pitch shots were more on the mark because you taught me how to dial them in on your materials that I purchased. I will get there - thanks for the encouragement!

Hi Paul… the one thing I see from you that you will see in any world class player is at your finish your right sole of your shoe is pointing straight and back and the foot is on its toe. This also tells me all your weight is now on your left side: if I asked you to lift your right heel it would be easy as you are so well balanced on your finish. As we get older we stop using our legs, use buggies on the course, lift’s instead of stairs, people even downsize to bungalow’s. Great vlog Paul any advice to get the legs and feet working again.

I did a tip on that here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pqmqdqp2x7rMmaM.html I know all about seniors not moving their bodies. Drives me crazy. To move the body you need to be thinking of moving the body. Because seniors want distance they just keep whacking away at it with the arms. So you first need to get the hinge and rehinge working. This will create power with minimal lower body. Once you work on that you switch to the lower body for even more power. Here are the 2 drills everyone should be doing daily in practice swings: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/icx5gJV4vNCdc6c.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nrCVdMZ2vsjamIE.html Here is more on the wrist release: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g55ma7SkudKrpGg.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ppqmdLaetODPgJs.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hJOeerBn3rSbaWQ.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/r651qZp4nsCZXWQ.html Then you can apply this trigger to hit the ball: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iMqgm9eZqLedhoE.html

Paul tremendous concept and ability to understand something that is difficult for most people to understand and less you are a professional athlete everything is done from the ground up whether you’re sitting on your ass hitting a golf ball you’re still moving through the ball by pushing off your lower body and I was watching Pete Alonso huge Mets fan his ability to generate speed from his lower body with just like a half a swing and connect a ball 600 feet he’s got 140 something RBIs with the few games left and I’m hoping that the Mets get through this season with a division championship but when you watch this guy.. What you need is an explosive acceleration of the club head. Of course by means of -"everything". The problem is, however, that people do not know what causes the acceleration of the club head. Is "everything" an accurate answer? Percy Boomer puts the emphasis on the body 'below the waist' for a variety of reasons, one of them being that people intuitively overemphasise the use of the arms. Thus, it is a question of relative contributions.

No serious proponent of "arms and wrists", like Malaska for example, is suggesting the shoulders, hips and legs don't move. The issue is whether you consciously use the big muscles to "fire" the arms, or whether you swing the arms and also hinge/unhinge the wrists, with the shoulders/hips/legs moving to facilitate the acceleration of the arms. The problem is that some golf instructors, and I'm not suggesting Paul is one of them, have been putting far too much (and incorrect) emphasis on the big muscles being the main power source. They want you to maintain "connection" of the arms to the body throughout the swing, so that they move in response to the body, "coil" from the ground up like a spring, then release the spring and "fire" the hips so that they are wide open at impact, just like the top pros. As Padraig Harrington points out, this is a bad idea for anyone except elite golfers. It's difficult to do this consistently without good flexibility, great hand/eye coordination and lots of practice, and puts great stress on the body. For the vast majority of golfers Harrington advocates putting most emphasis on arms and wrists, with the body responding naturally. As he says, 80% of the power and clubhead speed comes from the arms/wrists, so focus on those. If you can hit your drive 80% of the distance of a PGA pro you are doing well!. In fact Paul has some great videos on exactly this point, with a relaxed swing and hinging/unhinging of the wrists producing effortless power.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Жыл бұрын
Yes, we all have different theories. I just break it into 2 parts. You need the arms and wrists working before powering it with the body. If not, you will hit pushes and push fades. Final step for me after the person gets the arms and body working would be to not hit or help the shot with the arms so you don't manipulate the face. Seeing it in 2 parts just makes it simple which is what I am all about.

You say you hit a draw but is that from square? If you are aimed right and drawing it that is a pull hook. So to hit it straight you need to square up. You need a neutral grip and completely turn off the arms. I base the swing on my body and try to not hit or help the shot in any way with my arms. If you have a slight draw I would think your grip is a little strong. You want to lower the spin you need to be more behind it through impact (body tilt) so the club bottom out before impact and is level or up as it hits the ball. Swinging up at it never seems to work for me as I hit it way too high. Keep in mind Moe maybe hit it 250. I grew up 10 mins from him and met him many times.

So you are doing what you need to do for a perfect draw. Not sure what else I can add. If you want to hit it dead straight then you need to stop the path from crossing the target line. You make it look so easy. 🏌 It probably is if I back off, start slowly and work up the speed. I arm swing. How many months does it take to change to a body swing?

It is easy but to get it you need to understand it, get used to new feelings as well as a few positions/movements. All of this can be done at home doing practice swings. So how long does it take? You can get it super fast and listen to how I explain to do it. This is tough for most people. They want it instantly and they want to hammer the ball as hard as they can. This is not how to do it. So if you want to do it then commit to learning it no matter how long it takes. (this should be no more than 1-3 months). I have had people learn this in under a week. This is a swing for life that you are building. This means when you are 95 years old you will still be able to swing with good power and pain-free. Up to you.
