#1 Gear: Most of us have cameras that are better than our skills. Most of us are not able to use the full potential of our cameras. As soon as I reach my camera's level I will upgrade my gear. The most difficult part in filmmaking is making films.

Good stuff, I'd also say, for most people, the difference between a $1k camera and a $10k camera can be minimal if you understand lighting. And another thing that tends to get overlooked is audio. People will overlook average image quality if the audio is good. But give them poor audio and they wont watch your perfectly shot footage from your expensive red camera.

Skill + Good Gear = Quality Results; Case in point: shooting in low ight with a cheap video camera will get you much more noise than a more expensive camera that features 14-15 stops of dynamic range.

I just got a bmpcc 6k and once I used it for the first time I truly realized that what people were saying about gear not mattering was total BS. I mean how can a iPhone or old canon rebel truly compete with something that has log or raw? It’s good to finally hear someone tell the truth. Great video

Depends on who you are asking. If it's an art-house director, story and creative direction matters most, gear can come second if not third or fourth. If it's the DP of a big budget studio film, gear matters. Some of my favorite movies were shot on bare minimum (Clerks, Tangerine) so to me it doesn't matter. Problem is is that people tend to get gear obsessed instead of focusing on the basics of story telling and film making.

I rarely agree on literally everything in a video but man this is all so damn true! Especially the first point that gear does matter definitely resonates. I can honestly tell that the biggest jumps in quality and knowledge I made were when I committed on buying a mirrorless and later on a cinema camera. I once read an article that it is way more effective for you to grow into your gear than the other way around and I can wholeheartedly say that this has been 100% the case for me. Don't get me wrong, learning and understanding the equipment you got definitely makes all the difference but it's way more difficult to learn about something you've probably already outgrown than to learn about something that is "above" your skill-level lol

Great thoughts for sure. I resonated the most with the first and last "lies"/tips. Gear definitely can make a difference in both usability and final image. I run with the GH5 on projects I have to be fast and nimble because getting the shot matters more at a lot of events than straight up image quality. Narrative and commercial projects I'm grabbing the FX9 because the raw image output and usability of the camera is suited to those jobs. If I was a bigger fish I'd be reaching for the Arri. And very true about charging. I'm working on a project now that I really low balled that has taken SOOO much time I'm probably making $2 an hour on it. I knew I should've billed more or walked on it, but I didn't, and now I'm paying the price. And definitely agree about collaborating. I've got a few go to guys that I call in when I need more people on set, and visa versa.

That “gear actually kind of matters” is spot on if you are working commercially - for a paying client, it does unfortunately matter what you show up with to do the job, be it either the brand of your camera and lenses (a lot of people book gigs just because they own REDs) or, quite simply, how your camera rig looks. If, however, you are focusing of doing docs and fictional narratives for portfolio and to submit to festivals, trying to kickstart a career in traditional filmmaking, then, given how homogeneous cameras have gotten, gear doesn’t really matter. And this brings me to your point that nowadays it is very easy to close the gap between a beginning filmmaker and an established filmmaker. An established filmmaker hopefully has much more going on for them than simple teachable knowledge, because if it all came down to stuff you can learn online, them everybody would be extremely articulated with video, and that is definitely not the case. Out of the hordes of filmmakers that exist today, you’ll be hard pressed to find someone who clearly stands out from the rest. And when they do, it’s because of their taste and sensibility - and those things not only cannot be taught but take quite some time to learn by yourself and to be properly developed.

@Brandon Washington, thank you very much for the video. But I have one question: What is the big difference between photographer lenses and cinema lenses? Once I have informed myself about the difference between sigma cinema lenses and sigma art lenses. Maybe the cinema lenses have a bigger focus ring allowing you setting the manual focus more smoothly and more precisely. But the cinema lenses are about 3 times more expensive than the art lenses... and when using them at the Canon R5 with autofocus, I am not able to understand the advantage of the cinema lenses... Thank you very much for the response...

How do I get started as a beginner freelancer if I don't have a certain niche yet? I shot travel for about a year (and then covid), did gym shoots for half a year and just got retrenched cos the company's in the red. I still don't quite know what I really want to do, so I guess I have to shoot a lot more. But how do I find clients and how do I convince them I can do the job even when I have 1 or maybe even zero clips for that particular genre? E.g. I want to try real estate, but I don't have any work to show.

My take on the gear doesn’t matter line is that gear matters you need gear to create however having the gear itself won’t make you a better creator or filmmaker. It’s your knowledge of the techniques and the gear that will allow you to make better work. If you don’t know what you are doing shooting on a 1DX or a Red will make little difference cause your knowledge of the techniques and craft isn’t there. You don’t need the most expensive gear to make great work but you do need gear and you more importantly need to understand the gear you get
