From Dean Movshovitz: One of the joys of writing Pixar Storytelling was simply re-watching all of Pixar’s magnificent films. And while all of Pixar’s films are very moving and personal, two stood out as particularly relevant: Ratatouille and Monsters University. I believe these two films should be mandatory viewing for anyone striving for artistic success. One deals with greatness, the other with the lack thereof. A smart aspiring artist must consider either possibility might end up relevant for them.

Mike found out he was funny, not scary. Laughter turned out to be a better energy source than children's screams; Mike transformed the industry he was in by pursuing his real talent

You know, I'm pretty sure there are people out there who say that Monsters University was a prequel that no one asked for, and while that may be true, I'm glad we got it. Because it teaches a very important lesson. For anyone. You can pursue your dreams, you can do everything right, you can fail, and pick yourself up again and again, but sometimes, your dreams really aren't meant to be. But it's not the end of the world, and it doesn't mean you can't be something else, and it doesn't mean you can't like who you become. Not everyone can achieve their dreams, and this movie tells you, that's ok.

"Not everyone can become a great artist, but a great artist can come from anywhere." This quote is perfect in Ratatouille, but I thought about it again while watching MU, so thank you for making this video ha ha! Mike couldn't become a "great artist" as a scarer by himself and neither could Sulley. It was only when they combined their efforts that they became that great artist, proving a great artist can come from anywhere. ☺

I've seen a number of family in my life deeply unsatisfied with their existence waking up Monday doing the same thing till Friday praying the weekend lasts forever than waking up Monday and doing it all over again switching jobs and doing anything to satisfy themselves and honestly that's my biggest fear. The grind the natural boring nature of life im only a teen and I find the daily grind of high school unbearable I've gotten far better at drawing and animation and I can only hope I don't end up like Mike trying desperately for something that just wasn't meant to be.

Pieguy489 well, the point of the story is, even if you can't do what you love, you can still find happiness in other things. It's hard, I know, but not impossible. :)

Great video! Monsters University has a lot of negative criticisms for some reason, but I really love it. It's one of the only childrens' movies I can think of that actually taught this important lesson; that sometimes, your dream just won't come true, but that doesn't mean all is hopeless. Every other show blurps out the same "follow your dreams" message, but Mike followed his dream and finally had to face that he just wasn't cut out for it, but he needed to find where his actual talents were, and what other things he could get joy from. He worked his way up from the bottom into something he was actually good at, and he came to enjoy it.

I already loved Ratatouille, but now I look at Monsters University with fresh eyes. It's hard to follow your dreams when so much in life is working against you, but you reminded me that it is worth trying. Don't fear failure! And even if you can't manage to fulfil your dream the way you wanted, you can still become great in that field, doing something a little bit different. Don't give up :)

I'm a student at a small 3D Animation college and to be honest, I seriously suck at 3D. I cried so many times trying to build a model as simple as a tea cup because I'm just that terrible at 3d modeling but at the same time I dream to work at an animation studio near my college. I wanted to quit studying many times before and even right now I feel terrible about my rejected artworks and I'm only a beginner. But this video truly inspires me. Thanks for making this.

This goes to prove if you don't have the talent you don't have the talent. I've seen too many artists online telling people it only takes practice to get good at art but the truth is some people will never be good and just have to find something else.

1) No it's not that black and white Mike isn't scary because of his design he is too cute 2) Practice does help to quote Chuck Jones you can't make a pig a race horse but you can make the world's fastest pig. Even if you aren't the best in the world you can still be good.

This is why I hate it when people throw of Monster's University as a "buddy college movie" because it's so not. The focus wasn't on the friendships of Mike and Sully, it was focusing on Mikey's dream and how it just doesn't come true. In every college movie there's hardship but the main characters come out on top and graduate. In this one, they just didn't. Mike wasn't good enough. He tried harder than anyone and studied more than anyone but he wasn't good enough. And that's okay. Yeah, it sucks but sometimes that's how it is. But we pick ourselves up and we move on. We find another way. Mike never became a monster who scares but he got on that scare floor in another way. Mike failed everything the movie was building up for but he carried on. Monster's University is an under appreciated movie and that is heartbreaking.

For every movie out there telling kids to follow their dreams, this was the one movie that had the boldness to tell them "Your dreams may not come true, and if they don't, that's okay. Things will work out, one way or another, and you can still do what you love in a different way" An underappreciated movie, indeed.

Lloyd Alexander's "The Chronicles of Prydain" book series is a lovely illustration of this theme (go read them and skip the upcoming spoilers).... Young Taran first dreams of glory and armed combat, but as he matures he tries his hand at several trades. Though he meets with good success in several, he does not feel happy with them. Finally he finds a trade he sincerely loves but is eventually confronted by the truth that he does not possess the skill to master it. That's a bitter pill for a young adult series! Eventually, Taran finds that his destiny lies along a far greater and more demanding path, but I'll always remember those moments when he had to let go of his humbler but happier dream.

Thanks so much for sending this to me by email. It was seriously something I haven't thought of before. I'm still only 12 years old, but my biggest dream of all is to become a professional digital 2D animator. I'm an okay artist, and people know this, but not many are supportive other than my subscribers. My parents and my brother think that an animator does not earn enough income, and they want me to be something like a teacher or a doctor, in which I know I won't be fond of or good at. My friends and teachers at school think that the animation thing I have going on is just a hobby, but I'd love to make a living out of it. I think I'll keep pushing their doubts aside because now I've learned that others negative opinions shouldn't drive me away from my dreams. Tons of my friends say that they want to be doctors, teachers, lawyers, ect., but they're never willing to do anything about it to actually become those things. I wake up every single day at 5 AM just so I can get some free time to work on my animations. It makes me so happy. Every moment I have free-time you can be assured I'm somewhere among my animation programs, or even on YOUR channel finding new ways I can pour my heart into animation, because it means so much to me. Again, thankyou for teaching me this extremely valuable lesson. ~ Legend

Same thing here man. I want to become a 3D animator (or even any animation type) and all my friends want to become doctors and stuff but I never here or see them doing anything about it. I do have some support from one of my friends sorta and my dad is VERY supportive but my mom thinks I can do better since she thinks animators don't get enough income. I don't care about being rich, I just want to have a job where I can wake up and be happy to go to work, not hate it. But the waking up at 5am part, well you're way more dedicated at that point than one I think xD I can't wake up at that time no matter what!

I want to be a digital 2D animator as well, but my family IS very supportive of my passion. But I do know what it's like to have people who don't support you and that's ok. What do they know? If it's your passion go for it. I don't care about being rich, although I don't what to fall into the income problems my parents have, I just want to be happy, not do something I hate. There's even a quote I kinda look up to "Do what makes you happy, and you'll never work a day in your life" Even though It's still work, It's work i'll enjoy doing, and that will make it so much better

***** Yeah I think I've seen a few of RubberOnion's videos. Unfortunately I'm just a little teeny anthro-animal lover (aka could be known as a furry ahaha) who likes to animate cats on the internet for other people. I've considered joining contests like that but they seem very time-consuming and competitive. I also don't know how I would be able to receive prizes if I really did win given that I'm still a little kiddo. But there's something I do do (lol) which is join these projects called Multiple Animator Projects, aka MAPs. A host picks a song and divides the song into parts. You can ask for a part and the host will confirm whether or not you get it, usually based on skill and experience. In most cases, you can animate whatever you want to fit the song. Usually there are deadlines and extensions. You don't really get paid or win a prize or anything, but in my opinion it feels awesome when in the final product, you get to see YOUR animation up there with so many animators you look up to. Pretty neat, huh?

Not only did mike find his place as Sulley’s scare coach, at the end of monsters inc he finds another way to use his talent when they discover laughter is more powerful than screams and the roles are flipped so Sulley becomes his coach. It’s an especially satisfying arc if you watch both movies together, because it’s really everything they encounter throughout both of them that lead them to the place they are at the end of monsters inc

I've met loads of people, and I can see there are two types of people. Those who think creatively, and those who think realisticly. Creatively wants to go for their dreams no matter the pay, and realistically want to get a high paying job. I want to do both, doing what makes me happy while making a lot of money. Like Mike and Sully, I want to climb the ladder of film-making, which is starting from the bottom and climbing to the very top to where I can be happy and be able to make load of money. I want to do what I want and be able to make enough money to sustain myself. I want to decide what i want to do. Kind of like Lightning in Cars 3, I decide when I'm done.

Everybody is just pouring out their souls in the comments, and I could very much do the same. I'm a student in college that wants to study illustration but needless to say I've been rejected by the program. It was devastating, but life threw me a bone and said "you're good but not necessarily good enough" by that I had a professor tell me (even though they're not technically supposed to) that I was JUST off the cutting point on the list. You know how much it sucks that you're told you're really good but not good enough? On the other hand, I was 1 of the 4 people offered an illustration class that technically not available to nonillustration students but they broke the rules for 4 people. Obviously I took the leap for it, and I'm in the mess of being on track to be a graphic designer even though I want to be an illustrator. I have 1 more shot at being an illustrator by going through the application process again, and god I'm terrified on what's gonna happen if I don't get in. But, I can't really think like that, I have to try to not to. These kinds of videos and people commenting are important for me, and I thank that I'm not alone even though we all have different experiences. It really sucks being told you're great but somebody else was better, but at the same time it's so much better being told that I was great and I can give forth even more effort (even though I'm not sure if it's physically possible but I'm gonna try). It's totally better than being told you're at the bottom of the list and that you really suck. So... I guess even though it sucks it could be worse.

Jesselyn Creates Hey, keep your head up, okay? :) You don't have 'just one more shot' at becoming what you want to be. You have hundreds! Just one less obvious way, that's all. Never give up if this is what you TRULY want. Keep on creating, make your own portfolio, it will grow overtime and you will keep getting better. Perhaps you have to do it as a hobby for a while because you have to get another job. It's not ideal, but you'll learn a lot and have to prioritise. Me, I wanted to work in the movie business or become a helicopter pilot. Because of reasons, both didn't work out. Fast forward some years and I make edits on KZfaq and this summer I'll give it my all to become a drone pilot. These weren't my original dreams, but they're close enough and I'm feeling fulfilled and motivated all the way. It's up to you to decide what you want to do with your life. I'm sure that with enough creativity and effort you too can find something that fulfills you, no matter what it is. Good luck! :D

I loved art all my life... until 7th grade when my art teacher kept rejecting my projects. I developed a hatred towards art. I went on to college and got a degree in math. I was not satisfied or happy with what I was doing. Eventually I re-discovered my love of art. I’ve become an artist and am now working on becoming an animator. Never give up your dreams or passion because of the opinions of others.

I like your video. Another got me inspired is Creativity Inc (My favorite book) I heard the story of Ed Catmull wanted to be a animator. But soon he gives up his dream. But eventually he discover CGI. He realized that he may animated with a computer instead of drawing and I believe that everyone is doing that the same what Ed did. I purchase my dream of being animator when I was 7 years old when Wall-E was released. I am a okay drawer. But I wanted to animating with a computer. I wanted to animated with CGI. I'm about to get a computer soon to get started. I had to watch Monsters University. I hadn't seen it. But sounds like a good movie. Seems very inspirational to me.

Nice essay, gets to the point without adding a lot of bloat, this made me reevaluate my feelings towards Monsters University after better understanding it’s themes and what it’s trying to say about being an artist That being said, your skill as a writer could use some work as there were a lot of thoughts that could have been phrased better. Overall I liked the ideas that you were presenting, but your skills in presenting could use work.

if life was a bit like movies... sometimes you do, work but you can't archive anything because you don't get a chance... I'm now working where I wanted to, doing what I like but it would not be possible if some other people decided to give me a chance. That's the most annoying part, where you don't have control and someone else decide about your future.

I wonder are there any animation websites where community and industry pros are? When I see sites like artstation I'm kinda envy they have this place to show what they do and be noticed by industry.

It's something that you don't think on it when you're watching the movies but finally it is kept in your subconscient and you used it as clarify a lot of thinking that people have. It was very inspirational even more when you start to read comments below and see the 12y.o boy with a dream, the adult with his dream come truth, the girl who was told about "she was good but not good enough"...it's amazing how this video makes people talk about their feelings and experience, and I'll share mine on my Tumblr because it could be a bit long, but also an opinion for everyone who want to keep it... I'll also share this video there mayteramosart.tumblr.com/post/168010856526/animation-emotion-dream *It's not for followers because I don't use tumblr too much, but if you're interested in my story/art/what I do, instagram is better

but, what happens when you have no motivation? or fleeting motivation. I work towards it small bits at a time, but inbetween the small bits weeks can pass and i never feel like i can start working on it again..... I feel like I have an overactive imagination, but not the motivation to go threw with it.... Any advice?
