I know you may not have a complete set with each brand of iron, but the fairest way to test each is at a set distance. For example, a green that is 190 yards from the tee. You may have to use a 7 iron with one club and a 6 or perhaps a 5 iron with the others. Then you can fairly compare dispersion and spin rates.

I’m glad you posted this, I’m on the newer side to the game and have found very little in terms of gains from game improvement irons. The way they interact with the ground, offset and just plain size puts me off. I find that I actually strike more compact irons more consistent. Not to mention that the GI irons are a full club stronger in loft. If you’re a junior or a bit older and need the fastest tech available or just want a set to whack at a few times a year than it makes sense. If you actually want to play the game and actually improve it’s probably better to learn with a more compact iron. Nothing worse than learning bad habits.

I started golfing in 2011 with Cobra TDR irons which are blades and force you to be acurate. Then I got a set of larger head Callaway S2H2 irons. If you didn't hit the ball of the middle your elbows would shake rock raddle and roll from the MASSIVE negative feedback. These sets forced me to improve my ball striking or the punishment was severe. Now I like having irons that I still have room to grow into but can have a few beers and have some back up forgiveness . I only buy forged clubs and have Nike Vapor Pros (no, not the pro combos), TM P760 and in my bag are New Level 902s. All 3 sets feel amazing and are fogiving.

A game improvement club is doing what it should do, it’s not about making your good shots better, it’s about making your bad shot better. I know way too many golfers whose ego gets in the way of their club selection which ends up affecting their entire day negatively. It’s always some excuse about why they are hitting so poorly and so on whereas if they were playing a more forgiving club they would actually enjoy the round more.

Pretty much a myth that you should play blades to get better. I have both the Ping G400 and i210 irons. Many pro's (especially LPGA) play the i210. They are elite ball strikers. I am not. And I am a 4 hdcp. I'm better with the G400's. Let's be real... unless you are a plus handicap with anything outside of 100 yards you should be trying to hit it high, straight and at the middle of the green. 12 handicaps that want to "work a fade to a back right pin" just crack me up as they miss 13 greens per round with their blades or "players" club. Just hit the friggen middle of the green.

I'm at that stage now of learning to shot shape, high long draws or medium high cuts, stinger 2 iron shots ect. Was 20 HC for years gave up golf for 5 yr, but this year took it up seriously and i'm down to 10.1 HC. Always aimed centre green or fairway - but in order to get to 5 HC goal i gta learn to shot shape and attack pins more or best sides of faiways. The JPX 921 forged irons let me do this to a decent extent. Shot shaping is hard and you look a fool, but its only part of my game that needs massive improvement

Man I couldn’t agree more! I have been a +3 handicap in the past and am currently a 4 handicap honestly those 7 strokes are ALL putting and chipping. I find it’s “fun” to shape the ball and attack pins sometimes but you just score better when you just aim for the middle of the green or at least favoring the middle and beat the course with your putter! I’m going from mizuno 921 tours to some l thing SUPER Gi like maybe the rogue xt or the sim2 max or the zx4 problem is my fitter is like man you don’t want to play those! He don’t get it.

In the world of Golf are two competing entities. Golf Clubs vs Practice. Almost every golfer wants to kneel at the Alter of "Newer and More Expensive will improve my game". Then there are some golfers who believe it is not the cost, name or age of the clubs, it is the person swinging the club. My philosophy as a general rule is if you have fitted clubs and can draw a 7 iron with Titleist XXX model golf clubs then you are capable of drawing a 7 iron with a set of knock-offs with the same length, loft and lie as the Titleist iron and vice versa. So it now begs the question that if you know your clubs and know your distance by club, then which clubs (i.e. irons) become game improvement irons. It comes down to 'have you learned to swing your clubs consistently?'. Now if you want more distance then you can get different balls or get your same clubs with a stronger loft but that gets back to club fitting and not the clubs age, cost or brand name. So what is a golf improvement club. Any new club(s) in your bag require the user to be able to swing consistently and know your distances. If you do not master those two things, no new additions to your bag will result in improvements in your game no matter how much of an offering you make to the gods of Titleist, Ping, Calloway, TaylorMade or any other brand manufacturer

The consistency of the blade was so good on most shots it would set you up best for birdie putts. The one you hit short is an up and down to make for par. The game improvement iron even though it was close would be scattered all over or just off the green with multiple up and downs needed. Score would be best with the blade for you

When I first started playing, I went through a variety of game improvement irons, without any good results. I did this for years. But it was when I went to a smaller, more traditional head, WITH LESS OFFSET, actually helped me more. I think that the longer blade lengths of GI irons are harder to square up.

Great video, I found this to be true for me this year I got back into golf and bought a set of Sim Max irons and had a decent time but wasn’t sure why I couldn’t improve until I got a P7MC in my hands and I’ve been in love since. @Nick0G2
@Nick0G2 3 жыл бұрын
@@fend2ride I liked the distance as well but really everything just shifted a club up so a normal 5 iron shot would now be a 4 iron and so on. I would recommend you switch after you can hit the ball and send the ball on a similar flight and direction majority of the time. I know I was struggling with the Sim irons and I think it was a mixture of offset and a lack of feel, the club almost disconnected me from my swing. Now that I’ve switched and played the P7MC iron for a year I’m playing the best I’ve ever played because now I have been able to determine how to hit the ball straight and how to put a slight fade (my natural miss is slice) I am still working on a draw but I’m sure if I went to a coach I could learn. I think another benefit is the thin sole, I am not much of a divot maker but the sim always seemed to get stuck on the ground in my swing but the P7MCs don’t have that issue helping me make better contact. Hope this helps!

I've been on the fence about going to CBs from super forgiving irons. And I've realized that if I stick with these clubs I'll never get better. 85% of my shots feel the same. No real feedback= no info if you're getting better. So I think I'll go this year to get fitted for a set of players irons. The fitter is going to think I'm mad. But I feel it's the only way I'll be able to take my game to the next level. Will I be able to hit them properly the first season? Hopefully. But not likely. But that will force.me.to improve. While also having a set of clubs that I can grow into and not have to buy another set for 4-5 years.

a couple notes first you should have compared they at x distance. like if 160 yards out play the one you would hit of each. Second the middle one thats supposed to be the best of both seems like the worst of both 15 yards distance front to back with a 7 iron is going to turn lots of GIR opportunities into trying to save par or bogey. I see lots of complaints on the players distance irons for this. Also the strike pattern of the max might also be due to the massive sole and mat interaction

I'm a 5 Hcp (today, anyway) and I play Callaway Apex 19s with graphite regular shafts, because I'm a short hitter - about 145-150 with 7-iron and I average about 230 total yards with driver. I like the Apex 19s because you do have to put a decent strike on them, but there's some help there. They feel quite good, and there's not a massive amount of offset - though still too much for my liking. Still waiting for that "unicorn" set of irons for the single-digit short knocker: a head with some forgiveness and fairly strong lofts, but with little to no offset. I doubt it will ever happen.

I don’t get ‘game improvement’ and the whole argument that higher handicaps should play them because ‘they won’t punish you as much on mishits’ or ‘you won’t experience as much drop off’. In my experience as a relatively mid-high handicapper - I experience a lot of extremes in ball striking and have tried a wide variety of clubs on the course. A chunky game improvement / distance iron with a lot of tech tends to accentuate the ‘drop offs’ in distance. The tech maximises it’s potential on flushed shots (gaining more distance) but I’ve found that a bad miss is a bad miss regardless of what type of iron you are playing. So what’s best then? Playing an iron in the hope you flush it (and let’s face it this doesn’t happen as much as we like at our level) and gain massive yardage or an iron that has a little less tech and smooths results out a little and therefore promoting a little more consistency?

Well, until you said "finesse shots" i was of the opinion you were deluding yourself. Best consistency and dispersion of the three were the most forgiving. Even for you. Top that with the fact that that 7 iron goes 10 yards+ past your blades, means you need the 8i version to make the same shot. That i assume given the extra loft and spin will make for even greater accuracy of the 8i max. stick em in the bag. get over the bravado and get em in!! Finesse shots? lets see that video!!! Also to test forgiveness, could you not try striking them out of the toe and or heel? good video though, but i was thinking you should have the max's in the bag.

I think the best game improvement is the player. Like they say practice makes perfect.I think that one must see what they want to achieve to have a happy playing experience. Do you think the pros are that good because they have good clubs? They practice like crazy on every kind of shot and every kind of club in the bag. Bunker shots, long grass, sand etc. Plus if they don't make the cut they don't get paid. Alot depends on age, money, time, and skill. I also think that lessons from a pro is a good use of money. You can practice all day long , but if your grip, stance, swing is off then you won't really get better. You will continue to make the same mistakes. No club is going to fix that. Some have more forgiveness and the bad hit might not be so bad, but may save you from the rough. But all in all lessons, practice and decent grade clubs with help any player get better.

You need to expand the data your showing on hits my eyes aren’t that good. At 69 I don’t have the fitness or money to afford a lot of lessons and range time to be able to hit blades, it’s a fact the blades are shorter in distance and my one area of most concern is distance so for someone in the older age bracket who has lost this aspect of their game game improvement irons are the way to go. I can relax more in my strike, performing at somewhere between 50-80%. This would improve my game a lot. My technique translates to skill at a swing speed from 70-75 mph. At 80 miles an hour it comes apart, but I love full speed and distance. But the i fuck up my game.

"Game Improvement" irons of course don't improve your game. They will likely improve distance and maybe consistency on off center hits, but not your game. A set of blades will tell you when you mis hit the ball and encourage you to work on strike. That will actually improve your game. You have to be willing and able to practice quite a bit in order to improve any aspect of your game but if you do, you'll benefit from a blade. I know because I bought a set of blades as a 10 handicap player. My ball striking and distance both improved a lot because of better ball striking and changes in my swing. I practiced a lot to get there, but I lowered my handicap significantly with the blades and I know I'm a much better player for the practicing.
