I am a nurse who taught parenting techniques for many years. My boys are grown now. One of the best tools I shared with young mothers was “if you choose….. then you’ve chosen…..” that way it isn’t you punishing your child. It’s building character into your child. It’s teaching responsibility. If you don’t remove the dishes from your room by tonight, you don’t have your screen time tomorrow. I’m sorry you CHOSE not to have any screen time today, that really sucks! Maybe you should consider your options more carefully. Anyway, thank you ladies for all your help!

This is wonderful. I had a group of high schoolers tell me that i got them in trouble when I subbed one day. I flat told them that I do everything I can to keep y’all out of trouble, but it comes down to if YOU act a certain way, you take it out of my hands. These are the consequences. They understood and got over it pretty quickly.

@@emilyboggess4426 use your life experience in your practice. Never lose your compassion. Don’t become jaded. Treat the person individually and truly listen. They are not their diagnosis. And I would highly recommend looking back to how infectious disease was handled pre-COVID, bc the medical profession lost their collective minds when the pandemic hit. The Alphabet agencies have guidelines, but they also have agendas. It’s sad. I love the old fashioned Nurse Nightingale style nursing where money didn’t factor into how people were cared for

Dear sweet Cas, PLEASE give yourself grace about your past. I got sucked into a cult in my teens and did a lot of things I'm not proud of either, BUT we have both faced things that "normal" people don't, survived those times AND completely turned our lives around to be better than we could've even dreamed before. Those dark days literally paved the way to who&where we are now, and I've learned to be thankful for that extra perspective that most people miss out on. We are the success stories, and should celebrate all that we've overcome instead of feeling shame. 💗 You're a hero, never forget that!

Years ago, my mom was recently retired (for the first time) from nursing and was traveling with friends on the freeway. A lady traveling in the opposite direction lost control went down into the medium and then up into the air. Landed upside down on another vehicle, and both those vehicles slid into the vehicle my mom was in. Literally, my mom was the first medical person on scene. Several cars back had a doctor, and the paramedics arrived FAST. The scary part, my wife and I were literally minutes ahead of the the lady that lost control. As I walked into my parents house (which is where we were heading) the phone was ringing. I answered it to hear my mom tell me that she is ok and not to worry. Mom saved lives that day.

I am 82 and had major shoulder surgery 6 months ago. They tell me it will be a year for full recovery. I tried to find a cleaner to come once a month. It’s 1400 sf. The prices were outrageous. I live alone and finally gave up and said it just will have to be what it is. Some days, I can dust a room and that’s it. I just don’t understand why they are demanding such high prices unless they are only trying to get into the big expensive homes. When someone has come, they have never been here more than 3 hours. The last one was $100 and she usually only here 2 hours. Hopefully, I will get enough strength back to take care of things because I just can’t pay that much.

I live on a farm. Every second is surrounded with work, and our daily mindset plan is putting out the biggest fire first. We make a point to take our horses camping every so often, just to clear our heads. Taking care of ourselves has to come first some times.

@@jacquelineburns2731 Thank you for your service, as you live and work on a farm. Our minds, bodies, souls are our most important possessions, and worthy of care so that they serve us well. When we can enjoy doing those care activities, I call that SMART! And you care for your horses, who in turn care for you (and hopefully they enjoy the camping break as much as you do! ) I was making my "put out fires" list just now. Always something. Self care is a lot of work, and can drop off the list easily in the face of new "fires." Overload. The work is never done, which is pretty much true on a farm, right? I'm glad you get that wonderful break periodically!

Despite becoming a successful lawyer due to immense efforts, finding out it was my brain and not my effort that was failing me - 😭😭😭 My son has now been diagnosed at 8, and my 5 year old not yet but will be, I vow they will not have to struggle like I did throughout school. I am a woman who is disabled. I thought I kept my house clean but I came across one of your decluttering and deep cleaning videos I am a newly empty nester so since I no longer have my kids to take care of I am now working on my house to get it decluttered. Unfortunately it is taking me forever but I'm ok with that because I know I will get there and luckily my husband is a minimalist so he is super supportive. So thank you both for your support. Also my daughter has ADHD, ODD and is also dyslexic. She was bullied and laughed at for so long she is now 17 and has graduated 2 yrs early and is going to EMT school in April, before she even walks the stage in May. I have told her and been told by several doctors that people with disorder or disabilities and so much more creative and she is a beautiful artist. So you got this you found your creative side and used it to help so many. So thank you both from the bottom of my heart and keep it up. God bless you both.

Cass, I just wanted to reach through the screen and give you a hug! I went through so much trauma at home because of my undiagnosed ADD and learning disabilities in the (70s and 80s), which lead to some self destructive behaviors in my teens and early 20s. I remember the moment I found out that I had disabilities. I felt exactly like you described. I've been a much better support system for my boys with their disabilities, than I ever had, but I've dropped the ball on cleaning routines and other routine related things. I think that's a tough one for many of us with ADD/ADHD or autism. Please give yourself some grace. You are amazing and should be so proud of all you've accomplished. I know I'm grateful and proud of you, myself. Between, you, Dawn and Cass, I've really made progress this last year on my home. Seriously, I'm so grateful for the three of you. ❤

As an older mom, let me say this, training your children to do chores is so well worth the emotional challenges that come with training them. Our 6 children are now grown and on their own. It was chaotic when they were all home and yep, we had some tears and arguments about the condition of the house, but each and everyone of them are hard working people who now run their own homes. They have all come back and thanked us for teaching them responsibility. It has paid off in their jobs big time! We did chore charts when they were little, the SHE card file system and finally, a daily reproducible form they could check off as they had accomplished the tasks. The final one also allowed me to write them notes and uppped the communication with busy teenagers. Every parent has to find their own best method and nothing works the whole time but it is worth it in the long run to train them!❤

I loved that Cass shared some of her story, even the hard parts. There are people out there with such similar struggles, it's powerful to hear from a successful person who has actually been there. The world is not very friendly to neurodivergent folks, and sometimes we just end up sending them down a very dark path. As a middle school teacher, I know that students with those struggles are a lot more likely to begin self-medicating to get through the day. If we could keep those people in mind the way we keep other people with more visible disabilities in mind, we'd all be better off. I know as a teacher that when I use strategies that are helpful to my neurodivergent students, invariably my other students benefit and find them helpful as well.

My kids are adults now but around 10 or 11 they each started doing chores and washing their own clothes. They helped with the dishes, trash, vacuuming, sweeping, and any other chores we assigned them. They had assigned laundry days and for sure cleaned their rooms when we told them to it. My husband did chores too. The wife/mom should not do all the house chores regardless of whether she works a paying job or not.

Had to stop and comment before the video was over. Cas said you wouldn't shame a child with Diabetes and if only that was the case! My daughter was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 26 years ago today at age 9. I could fill this page with the number of stupid things that people have said. Many people know a little bit about some kind of diabetes, the best known are 1 and 2 but there are actually more. On the shaming side people "think" they know that diabetes is caused by over consumption of sugar, that it is a life style problem. An elementary school teacher in her school,(not her teacher) told me my daughter would never get over it if I babied her. As actual fact, there is no cure so if opted for tuff love she'd still have diabetes. I am so sorry that Cas dealt with ignorant, cruel treatment and sorry for my daughter and all the children who dealt with difficulties. We need to teach kindness!

Cas, make sure to have your house tested and treated or remediated for mold. I do think that’s worth suing about. Black mold can cause all kinds of health issues, fast. So please, take care of that issue immediately. And yes, I’ve heard that you can be treated for mold toxicity and detox as well, but you have to get the environment treated and cleared out first.

I’m so conflicted/confused on this topic for different reasons. When I first learned about “black mold” (stachybotrys) I was taking microbiology in college for nursing school. Of course I knew what mold was but not this particular kind & what my professor told us about is horrified, shocked, & intrigued me, which is probably why I remember so vividly! I remember her specifically emphasizing the fact that “ no matter what anyone tells you you cannot kill this mold, and the only way to get rid of it is by burning it or whatever item it is on, so if you ever go to buy a house that has it and the homeowner and/or real estate agent tells you they will have it cleaned/treated, no matter what you do not buy that house, unless they are going to physically cut the area that it is on out the house! People will try to tell you they can have it removed but it is not true! This mold wants to kill you, and it will grow in your lungs and suffocate you as well as any of your belongings in contact with it!” She had ALOT to say on the topic! She said bleach doesn’t kill it but instead it just takes the color out of it, making it appear to be gone. That was a few years ago so unless there has been some breakthrough in the process of eliminating it, or unless she was wrong somehow (which I doubt bc she was a microbiologist & professor for 30+ years) then I still believe it. I wish I could go back and have a conversation with her about it now but she’s since retired & I have no idea how to contact her but I hear so much now about mold issues & I have so many questions that I didn’t know to ask then!

I agree. At least some of the suit would be an open & shut case. They intentionally drywalled over a bucket they used to catch water from a leak?! They were the original owners... there isn't anyone else that can blame that on! Shady people do stuff like that bc they've gotten away with it in the past, and no one has ever held then responsible for their lies.

Getting teens to take trash and dishes out of their rooms really resonated with me! I don’t micromanage the cleaning of their rooms, but I do expect some basics like picking up/taking out trash and bringing dishes out of their rooms. They are also expected to help with a few chores around the house as well (emptying the dishwasher, taking out recycles, feeding the cat).

I was a volunteer EMT for years in our small community. I later took a job that required shift work and crazy hours and an hour from home, so I had to give up my EMT job. I know the training is way harder than it was 30 years ago, but I felt like I was studying to be a doctor then! I'm proud of you for going through the training with your busy life. It's a rewarding job. This is a great podcast. Love listening to both of you!

I am a faithful follower of both your channels. This was such a good discussion, especially about all the things that still were on my mind such as the yard flooding, the EMT training, etc. You mentioned that many people are like friends, that’s how I feel, I tend to want to jump right into the conversation. I am retired and live alone now, but relate to so many of the organization, child care and working mom subjects. I raised three of my daughters, then a grandson, and somewhere in the middle took in a boy who could not get along at home. All this time I was a single working mom, with little or no financial support. Fifty continuous years as a hands on mom! My youngest, now 26, was diagnosed with acute ADHD and acute ODD (oppositional defiant disorder). He spent a full year in a (day) school for behavioral disorders. This really IS a medical condition, hearing people say he was bad, or needs a spanking, or I that don’t know how to discipline him, have no idea how serious and difficult this is. He was on meds until he was out of school, and when the meds wore off at the end of the day, he became unmanageable. He was on maximum doses, so there was nothing for the end of day time. My child was an extreme case, but all ADHD is difficult, a lot of us have it, are undiagnosed, and struggle. It is so enlightening to hear Cas talk about her experiences and know that she was able to overcome so many hurdles. I wish I could be there to tell my story with her. I don’t cry, I revel in the challenges and in overcoming them. I also want to thank you both for allowing me to be a virtual friend, jumping right into the conversation and sharing my experiences. I hope you both have a wonderful Christmas with all the happiness and sugar cookies you can eat. 🎄🍪🙋‍♀️

Thank you for sharing your story. We adopted an infant not knowing his birth mother drank and the resulting Fetal Alcohol syndrome, ADHD and OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) was challenging. I had so many friends, family and even teachers tell me he needed to be spanked as if that would have even worked. A physical disability would have been easier to explain but invisible disabilities are always misunderstood. My sweet boy is now 35 and lives on his own. He is under-employed as getting a job is easier than keeping one. But he knows he is loved and talks to us regularly. I cannot imagine raising him if I was a single mom. I have a great husband who was a teacher which helped with dealing with the education system.

I also have a Flood experience. Long story short- I’ve rented a down stairs Apt for over 20 yrs. In July 2019 a terrible storm flooded the basement part of my apt. Over 3 to 4 ft of water. I lost everything down there. Laundry room- washer & dryer- exercise/craft/office room & all Xmas, Easter & fall decor. Along with extra household supplies- paper towels, napkins, bathroom tissue. To say I was devastated & overwhelmed was an understatement. But then one day about 6 months after that happened I found Cas & then Dawn on KZfaq & by the grace of God, I slowly started realizing it was just stuff and could be replaced. It’s been 4 1/2 yrs since the flood and I’m still struggling with the declutter part (since the flood I have supplies cluttered everywhere and in living areas where they shouldn’t be) but it’s something I’m trying to work on. So hopefully this year is the year I can feel safe enough to store items where they need to be and not in tall stacks in my living areas. Thank you both for your insight, compassion & encouragement. 2024 is my year to get this job tackled!

I worked with children who had adhd as a para. They were my favorite kids. Most of them were really funny. We talked to parents about trying to keep their house as clear of clutter as they could because these children really feel the stimulation of too much stuff. We also found that to be true of autistic children. My husband recently had a massive stroke and I have been decluttering my home for 5 years. Thank goodness that I did. The stroke literally turned my life and our house upset down. I was able to have room for all of the equipment that he needed and was able to move things that I hope to use after he recovers (fingers crossed) into our walk in closet. I have been able to keep our home in order and have not needed help with cleaning our home even with all the help that he needs throughout the day. I learned the importance of no clutter for a person who has had a stroke.

I want to tell you how much hope you give as you talk about your ADHD story. Both my children for certain have ADHD. My daughter wasn’t diagnosed until she was in 4 th grade and suffered lots of poor self image due to it. She is still messy. Even now I’m planning on cleaning her apartment this week to help her. I don’t do it often because it is good for her to learn how to do it but sometimes she just needs to have a little help. She is 24 and doing amazing in life now but had to go through bumps and bruises along the way. Anyway you speaking reminds me of how she has grown and one day she will get a handle on her house too. It gives those people with ADHD the feeling that they can grow in this area. Heck Im 55 and it was just until a few years ago that I started getting a handle on it all after listening to you both. Thanks for what you are doing!!! I love hearing the challenges, struggles and victories. It makes you both real.

I had such a similar reaction as as adult in my 40s being diagnosed with ADD. I was sad for the kid I had been that always felt less than. It was emotional. Loved this chat. You are giving your kids a gift by teaching them life skills & accountability. Stay firm, they will thank you in the end. There will be consequences in their adult and working life they need to understand so help & guide them now. You are so passionate about your own skills that were taught to you, pass that on. Everyone, husbands included need to be part of the process that makes this a 'FAMILY' home. Also include a level of Financial learning as well. Never too early to start to understand the cost of items they use in their daily lives. You want your children to have the best foundation you can give them. I wish you both well in this New Year.

Dawn and Cas, thank you for the raw honesty and the humility that it has taken both of you to produce this truly wonderful episode. I have watched you for a long time and always found help and comfort in the things you talk about and teach. This, however, is a new level of openness that has hit me in the solar plexus and reinforced what I already know - I AM NOT ALONE! I have 5 kids who are all well and truly adults now. My youngest son was recently diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 33. After going through a period of deep grieving for the "little boy" he was, who experienced so much judgement and self-hate, he is enjoying the unfolding of a new and even more wonderful "him" who does his daily life with a profoundly nuanced and optimistic view of himself. Keep up this brave work because you are changing lives
