I lived in Battersea in the late 70s 80s and 90s. I had my four children there before we moved away. We used to go to the park regularly, it’s lovely to see it again. The fireworks held there on bonfire night were amazing

Thanks. That's nostalgic for me. I was born in 1964 in Battersea (near Clapham Common). My grandparents and Uncle Jack lived in Orbel St, a 5-10 min walk from the SW corner of the park. When visiting them (late 60s, early 70s), we often visited the park, to walk around and sometimes to ride in a boat. There were many roses in summer, which my grandmother loved. I can still smell them in my mind. Those rocks, I think are 'fake', and made of concrete. I don't remember the cascade or seeing it flowing. There was/is a type of fake cave made with the same rocks. Those 'springs' in the lake may be oxygenators - quite common in articial lakes. My Uncle Jack is now 96 and still living in Orbel St, where he has been for 90 years! In his retirement years, he visited the park every day, either walking (with his dog) or by bicycle. We used to take bread scraps to feed the ducks, which Jack continued to do (but which might be banned now due to duck health reasons?). He goes less often now due to reduced mobility. I remember seeing the Easter Parade in the late 60s. don't know if it's still done.

I was born in London and this is where I learned to fish. My dad used to take me every weekend during the 80s, before we moved to Yorkshire in the late 80s

Very interesting video 2x👍 I worked inside Battersea Power station many years back. The company had contract to supply steam to the apartments across the rive. After the power station closed they installed a boiler to fulfil their contract. I used to service the instruments that recorded the various parameters.

@@JP_TaVeryMuch No, that was not something I did and I dont think I would fancy doing that. I just made sure the recording instruments were calibrated correctly. It looked very different compared with today it had mostly no roof and mounds of rubble all over.

Ah, my old stomping ground there! Used to live in Battersea mid 60s (approx) to Nov 1976. Always remains a special place to me, and my first local amusement park. Always used to get excited when the London buses displayed their front posters proclaiming "Battersea Fun Fair - now in full swing" each Easter time. The annual park Easter Parade would herald in each new season. There's a great book out there called Battersea Fun Fair by Nick Laister & Robert Preedy by the way. Oh, sure you know already, but don't forget the park's famous former Grotto and Tree Walk for your next instalment. Fascinating video btw.

I often used to stop in Battersea Park for a break when I worked in and around London in the 80’s. Quite often there would be filming going on and regularly saw Dempsey and Makepeace being made 👍🏻

I was in Battersea Park rollerskating with my mates (as we often did, we lived in Battersea) one summer's evening in the early 80s, when we stumbled across them filming an episode of The Goodies!

Another great video, the bubbles in the lakes are probably aerators to keep oxygen levels up for wildlife. Can get massively depleted in warmer months or in high algae blooms and can devastate wildlife in the lake if not oxygenated 👍

I grew up in the Chelsea area in the 80's and Battersea Park was where my parents would take me. There was an adventure playground at the location of where the all weather football pitches are now. I remember it being the first place I would want to go to, even though it would be a health and safety minefield today. I don't know if the bandstand is an original, but I do remember it being there in the 80's. Great video and a trip down memory lane. Thank you.

That was a really interesting video. I occasionally walked in the park in the 1950's with my grandfather, who lived just across the Thames. Sadly, I have only sketchy memories, but I do remember the funfare, although not, surprisingly, the lakes or waterfall. Your video has prompted me to take another look, particularly as so much appears to remain unchanged. Thank you.

I missed the fun fair, but at the Historic Commercial Vehicle Society we did bring Carters Steam Fair into Battersea for the new long May Day weekend when the start of the Commercial London to Brighton Commercial Run was moved to Battersea Park. As Marine Drive was limited to the numbers of vehicles it could accommodate the GLC gave permission to use the central part of the park and the north drive route for a mini run and display on the Sunday and Monday mostly of vehicles that had a connection to London as well as some sales stalls and autojumble. A few years the weather was good, one year was wet and windy and a bit of a disappointment. Additional stewards and programme sellers were bob-a-job recruited from a Scout group in Esher and they did a great job putting up marquees for the small static engine and model meccano displays. Great Fun but after Wandsworth took over from GLC the start was relocated to Crystal Palace Park

Hi there Darren. I am from the Doncaster area and my mum had an aunt that lived in Twickenham. We used to visit her from time to time and one day we went to Battersea park when the fair was still there. I must have been 5 then and now I am 70.

"There's something very special behind this tree." (4:15) Yes - and there's someone very special in front of it, too: how are you, Darren? I usually try to say things to make you smile, but I did wonder how appropriate they were when you were talking about your viewing figures the other day. This could be a great call as there are many Londoners out there who enjoy watching films about places they're familiar with, so lets hope they provide the boost you need - or else, you might have to come and ride in Edinburgh (the tramway extension opens this week), and explore our tunnels with yours truly! If you're a good boy, I might even take you to a special island... But returning for now to Battersea: yes, that looks like the kind of park I'd love to explore - as yet I've only seen a small Thames-side section, off Chelsea Bridge Road. As ever, you're certainly wetting my whistle!

At 2:52 there was a amusement park in Long Beach CA with a ROTOR ride pretty much like the one in the image. London & Battersea park OR New York & Central Park: Hmmmm let me think....... London and Battersea park anyday..... The bubbles coming up in the lake could be for putting oxygen in the water, like a fish tank?

Excellent vid ! As others have said the little fountains were in the boating lake are probably devices to aerate the water to keep it healthy! Also ,it is not the case that all the subtropical plants in the sub tropical garden have been there since Victorian times as they certainly weren’t there in the 1960s where these were just gently rolling green mounds and the Victorian plants had been removed(To see how it looked in the 60s there’s a scene in the film R0BBERY starring Stanley Baker where he’s jogging in this area discussing the forthcoming heist! )

Hi Darren, i missed this posting 🥺 and just catching up with it. Now, certain areas of Battersea Park, Clapham Common had a very active 'adult' reputation 😉😉 say no more, that had nothing to do with fun fairs etc. As others have said the water bubbling outlets in the boating areas will be oxygen or compressed air to keep the water healthy. This happened in the Salford Quays and docks when the regeneration started. Several years it was oxygen pumped into the water. Once it stabilised it was compressed air. Now the water quality is good for open water swimming and fish stocks are very healthy and the compressed air is used every summer. That tour you did of Yeadon Park (?) The streams into the lake area could have benefited airiating too 😮 or you with your broddling sticks to clear the blockages 😎 Cheers DougT

8:33 It is a good bit of _rus in urbe_ as you say, all lovely and peaceful....that is until you go there when they're running the London stint of the Electric Formula One race or a dozen other things that city parks have to stomach every year. Also 10:04 the bandstand regained a modern day version of its original use when Supergrass filmed their '96 video "Going out" there, clean teeth n all.

The spurts in the water are likely for cleaning them, I think commonly used to combat algae. They are quite common in water such as ponds that tend to be still

It doesn't look like water from old fountains, it's more likely to be air being pumped through piping to oxygenating the water to keep bacteria and stagnation to a minimum. It's quite a common practice.

I did some family history research (not completed yet after 50 years) for a friend, they had a number of connections to Chelsea and Battersea which were quite interesting, though they seem to originate from Storrington, Mid Sussex

love it as always! I knew the park had a fun fair after the 1950s festival of Britain ( was too young to ever visit from up north and the fun fair at Battersea went into decline after the big dipper accident in 1972. I was 2 yrs old then so by the time I COULD have visited it was long gone sadly) BUT I never knew before that it had a Sir Maxims flying machine! think the only one left now is the one at Blackpool! ....sadly I think that's the only heritage ride (and oldest) apart from the river caves and ghost train left at Blackpool PLUS the woodie rollercoasters....they used to have the whip at Blackpool when I visited even going back to the 90s but it was Never open then it disappeared when they re did that area of the pleasure beach! ....I may be wrong BUT I think they sold it to Margate when they were trying to resurrect the fun fair there as a heritage one! never got re-erected and is prob still in storage in Margate somewhere sadly! It's a SHAME that they haven't done up and re-installed the cascade as a feature! they have something similar in a really small park in Ramsgate (made out of the same material Pulhamite which is a blend of sand, Portland cement and clinker sculpted over a core of rubble and crushed bricks) that cascades down to the road on medira walk (the road up to the upper promenade! ) here is a news article on it Darren! www.kentlive.news/whats-on/whats-on-news/thanet-stunning-ramsgate-waterfall-comes-7481196 i have visited Ramsgate and this is so picturesque! here is a vid of the gardens and the waterfall someone took will Prob give you and your subscribers an idea of what the Battersea park one was like when in operation! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdaEl5edmq-7Y5s.html
