US officials have confirmed that Ukraine has begun using long-range missiles secretly shipped in recent weeks. They say the missiles were used for the first time in a strike on a Russian airfield in Crimea last week. The "Army Tactical Missile Systems" - or ATACMS - were part of a 300 million-dollar assistance package approved by the United States in March. The US supplied mid-range versions of the system last September. This latest batch can strike targets up to 300 kilometers away. What targets do these long-range ATACMS missiles bring within the range of the Ukrainian military?

the guest is quite wrong about the usage of the bridge for military logistics. A railway line has since a couple of month ago been created from russia proper to crimea. There is also ferry connection and obviously transport planes. The bridges that are truly vital is the 7 bridges across dnipr river. If russia decides to blow them up then there is no way to move war material from western part to east of the river.

Viewers should look up Assault Breaker System to learn what ATACMS was designed to do. I was working with Ft. Sill (US Army Field Artillery School) during the Cold War when it was still in the conceptual phase. The intended target set was the Soviet commanders plan. The ATACMS system, not just the missile, is a theater level capability intended to have strategic impact by disrupting the timing and execution of Soviet (now Russian) maneuver plans. It wasn't primarily intended for precision strikes on fixed point targets (which were to be assigned to USAF after achieving air supercity). Of course some of the payloads can be pressed into service for that target set. A better use would be attacking large formation of Russian vehicles or logistics hubs at critical times in an operation. The Pentagon has targeting cells that utilize near real time modeling to decide what, where, and most significantly, when to employ the system. I suspect the Ukrainians can tap into that resource if needed. The concept of synchronizing an ATACMS strike with a cruise missile (e.g. Storm Shadow) strike has merit, more so if air assets can be synchronized to maximize impact to Russian maneuver plans.
@redrobin8544
@redrobin8544 2 ай бұрын
One should also notice the following. "ATACMS is a long-range, guided missile that gives commanders the immediate firepower to shape the battlespace. Each ATACMS missile is packaged in a look-alike MLRS launch pod and fired from the MLRS family of launchers". All existing MLRS launchers can deploy this weapon. This is huge.

I doubt they will use the US ATACMS or UK Storm Shadow - The war Heads are too small to bring it down unless there are multiple hits - Ukraine will want to use their own Technology to take full ownership of such a prestigious target - perhaps something like a sea drone or air drone with a 3-5 ton warhead

Do u have any comprehension about weights? 3 to 5-tone flying object?

For the purpose of taking down the bridge, the only missile that could be useful would be the Taurus. That said, I agree that the sea drones can pack a much bigger punch than any air weapon, they are a must if you want to bring the bridge down. The Atacms and Storm Shadow would help such attack by hitting ground based air defense targets as well as ships, all at the same time.

@ ATACMS has a larger warhead than Taurus. The bunker buster version (M48) has a smaller warhead but this at Mach 4+ vs the subsonic Taurus so that's over 16 times more kinetic energy per unit weight, which in theory is penetration power into concrete bridge supports for instance. If 1 or 2 missiles could cause effective damage, then say 50 could be used next for a more complete job (same cost as an F-16).
2 ай бұрын
@@delos2279 I googled a bit and found that the atacms version that can do 300km has a warhead of 472lbs while the Taurus has a 1060lbs warhead. But the speed difference is there. But I'd say that I heard from many war commentators that the atacms is not really the right tool to bring down a bridge. It can disrupt the driving lanes for quite some time, but it will not bring the supporting structure down. That said, I'm just a guy listening to commentators, I have no real knowledge in the field.

While the ATACMs can punch holes in the two bridges road and rail, it is extremely unlikely that only a few ATACMs could actually collapse the Kerch Bridge. The two main reasons are the sheer size and strength of the key compression arches supporting the main span, and the level of precision required to hit the most critical point is greater than the ATACMs offer. The ATACMs are GPS/INS guided. What's needed to hit within a ~1 meter radius is a terminal guidance (commonly infra red or radar) system which the ATACMs do not have. So, the question than is if it's worth expending many ATACMs on the road bridge, plus many ATACs on the rail bridge, or pursue many more targets with that collection of missiles

There are clearly four supply routes to Crimea which in importance order are probably... The Bridge, Rail, Sea and by Air... and if the bridge is knocked out they'll simply ramp up the remaining three while the bridge is being rebuilt. Personally, I think all the $61Bn will accomplish is extend the war resulting in more Russian and Ukrainian deaths and more towns and cities pulverised. It wouldn't been much better if Ukraine hadn't listened to NATO's cooing words and have remained neutral, surely as with Georgia making the same mistake years earlier... they knew Putin wasn't going to stand and watch as NATO built bases on the Russia-Ukraine border, less than three hundred miles from the centre of Moscow with only the flat lands between them?

Not even close. Rail can carry an order of magnitude (possibly two) more cargo than a truck. Right now, Russia has a shortage of trucks. Near the front line at least, Russia has been using van and box trucks. The Kerch Strait bridge has two components, a rail line and a roadway. Of the two, the rail line is more critical. If that is cut off, the northern rail line would be used. However, that rail line is within range of artillery, not just missiles. Russia has been trying to use the sea route, but they keep losing ships. And there is no way Russia can compensate with air deliveries. Not only does Russia lack the transports, the runways in Crimea are vulnerable.
@statesidekarma7240
@statesidekarma7240 2 ай бұрын
sure Crimea can be supplied by sea and air, but that would mean committing more resources to supplying Crimea. I don't know how much supplies a train can carry and how much Russia's plane can either but generally trains can easily deliver more supplies than any plane could, so way more transports and maybe potential escorts would have to committed to resupplying Crimea via air. As for the sea Ukraine has demonstrated it can hit naval targets in the general vicinity so you would probably need some small escorts to defend from these kind of attacks. As for the neutrality part ukraine wanted to join nato after russia showed it would take whatever it wanted by force, I think russia would invade ukraine no matter what happened
