What romance films get WRONG about lovers in gliders

How accurately do romance films portray the experience of going on a date in engineless glider aircraft?
Hollywood doesn't include all the messy parts but does invent apparently charming moments that would actually be potentially terrifying and dangerous in real life.
I'm giving my glider pilot take on the level of realism of three films.
And don't get me wrong, a date in a glider is still a great idea! Done properly, gliding is a safe and beautiful sport. But just fly safely and don't do anything stupid to impress someone with your skills.

As I pilot I have very limited experience - just around 100 hours half of which is Paramotoring and the other half in a C172 as well as a couple glider rides and a dozen hours paragliding. Almost any movie with any aircraft sequences drive me to scroll insta on my phone or just FF over it. Almost always beyond stupid. Your ratings here are generous.

Hey Greg haha yep I agree. It's frustrating to see so many movies with such big budgets trying to create realistic aviation scenes. But if the producers just asked anyone with even a little bit of flying experiences they be able to fix glaring errors.

really interesting analysis! Honestly, whilst the Fifty Shades scene was a bit corny and the actors did not actually experience the flight, the aerobatic pilot who flew the glider for the real life air footage is a legend. Seeing that scene whilst watching the film actually triggered a recollection of my very first flight in a glider when I was 8 years old, and a few months later inspired me to finally learn to fly. I now have 55hrs in gliders including about 4hrs in the DG1001S and Duo Discus featured in the films, and on the way to my commercial pilot licence in GA. Glider aerobatics are the best!!

Hands up, I'm guilty of the Steve McQueen flying in between trees. Happened at Lasham with a K13 in 1995. I was chasing a thermal going nowhere, then realised I was about 800 ft with the airfield at quite a distance. "F**k" I thought ...Stick forward, aimed for the airfield..... There were trees around the "peri" track ( perimeter), my thinking at the time was "sod the circuit".... along this tree line was a gap and went for it, then did a 90 and landed it without concern for circuit protocols. 20 mins later, one of my student colleagues approached and asked "Did you see the glider that went in between the trees?". "Yeah, it was me!"😅

G'day Mark and oh wow, nice save, epsecially in a K13! A 27 to 1 glide ratio right? Pity there were no GoPros back then to capture it. Haha at 800 feet in a DG1000 you'd airbrakes the whole way back to the airfield! I did a landing once when I was training with an instructor. He intentionally got us very low. But at 80 knots he felt relaxed with plenty of kinetic energy to pull up and over a tree line.

@@GlidewithTom Merry Christmas Tom. This wasn't my scariest, my solo in Le Blanc, France was something😃 Aerotowed up, flying Grob103. Released at 3000ft, problem, no GPS, no radio, no airfield!!!!!! Went for a little height, now at 4000ft, looking for landmarks, below me was a couple of lakes. First thought, look for Poitier, find the Roman Aquaduct, it was at my 10 o clock, track the motorway. Just north of Le Blanc is a natural park so I spotted a thick patch of green near the horizon with a light green/ yellow patch below that, the thick green I assumed was the national park, the light patch below it, .."AHH the airfield" .Made it back half hour solo, the criticism from my instructor (I think he was a bit nervous by this point, half hour😂😂😂😂) that my finals was low and fast😅. It's only years later out of curiosity I looked at Google earth to find where I actually was....found the lakes and measured as 15km from the airfield!!!!!! That was my solo😃 That evening I was the centre of attention from various clubs as after dinner I was ceremoniously ask to sit on a chair centered in the middle of the camp and I was then unceremoniously drenched with left over food and drinks from a bucket courtesy of pilots from various European countries😅😅😅 My instructor was Martin Judkins, the organiser was Brian Spreckley, I'm sure Brian is known to you....

I saw the original Thomas Crown Affair at the age of 12 and thought gliding was so cool that I had to do it and I did. Bocian to solo, then Capstan, Blanik, Pirat, Astir CS77, Mini Nimbus then I gave it up but had a blast on the way. What a wonderful sport.

@@GlidewithTom I really couldn’t pick a favourite Tom, I enjoyed them all. Most of my single seat flying was in the Astir. If I was going on a long cross country flight I’d choose the Nimbus, it had flaps and would glide a long way but had very powerful trailing edge brakes which helped in out-landings. Other pilots disliked the Pirat due to its poorly harmonised controls but I had some good flights in that one. The Capstan was good for early training with its side by side seats. I did my Silver C five hour flight thermal soaring in the Blanik and also did some aerobatics and spins. All good fun. If you get the chance to try something you haven’t flown before then go for it, Pete.

Cows are inquisitive creatures that always explore aircraft that land in their paddock, and this usually results in damage - MUCH damage. I once was stunned to see one of our club members doing a loop in the moon-light above the club-house. That was in a Blanik, the rays reflecting off its metal skin. Same pilot running the ridge too far, tried to cross the entrance of a gorge in strong wind conditions. That was poor judgement because the wind had venturi effect - it sucked him into the gorge for many kilometres where there was only dire landing prospects. However he had some skill and kept it aloft that his best glide eliminated any need for a final approach - but his guardian angel enabled him to just make it to a little flat. He was lucky to not die.
@GlidewithTom
@GlidewithTom Жыл бұрын
Hey Keith, thanks for those stories, they're brilliant! Those cows are a pest. They see tasty long grass at our airfield near Canberra and occasionally break in and we have to herd them away. @@GlidewithTom I felt a chill when I saw the loop, because in the remaining light, I doubted he could make a successful approach at the field ( no lights). And cows do like a good scratch, and extremities of gliders are just the ticket for that.

@@GlidewithTom It the most accurate scene I've encountered aside from Disney's "The Boy Who Flew With Condors" circa 1967 (if you haven't seen it.... It was the impetus for my love of flight - especially featuring the, THEN, La Jolla San Diego glider club right on the edge of the Pacific (With a winch launch). Which of course is a golf course now.) - I digress... The '92 WIND scene is brief featuring Jeniffer Grey doing a few loops in a classic Grob trainer with the bright orange Rudolph nose. When she exits the cockpit, she even remembers to slowly remove the weight to ensure the air-frame doesn't teeter back slamming the tail wheel to the ground. Which I've witnessed a time or two... LOL... Anyways, enjoy the films and keep putting up videos about soaring. be well!

Notice how the canopy of the Duo Discus opens towards the left side of the plane. That is also very unrealistic, as the Duo's, like all other planes, are boarded from the left side, and therefore have the hinges on the right side, so you don't have to climb over the canopy in order to get into the plane. But the directors, for some reason, wanted to shoot the actors in the plane from the right side without having to shoot through the canopy, and hence they had the plane altered. That is therefore the only Duo in the world where the canopy opened in the opposite direction of what that type of plane usually do.
@GlidewithTom
@GlidewithTom Жыл бұрын
Hey Jon, great spotting! I missed that detail. That is a weird alteration for the director to make. I wonder if the Duo Discus remained configured with that set-up. I'm sure there'd be many confused pilots looking around for the canopy latch in the wrong place.
@jonsteensen7706
@jonsteensen7706 Жыл бұрын
Upon closer inspection, it looks like they have cheated (as it is often done in movies). At 4:37, when the plane is in the air, you can see the hinges in the right side of the plane where they are supposed to be. At 5:21 you can, for a brief moment, spot a "tap" on the edge of the canopy (just behind the actress's head), which looks an awful lot like half of the canopy hinge. So my guess is that what happened, was that they took a normal Duo Discus, and for the field shot they detached the canopy in the usual fashion and probably made some kind of makeshift hinge on the other side with duct tape or something similar to hold it in place temporarily.
@rpstrong
@rpstrong Жыл бұрын
"Duo's, like all other planes, are boarded from the left side," Numerous planes - notably Pipers - have only a passenger (right side) door. I don't know why that's the case now, but with the Piper Cub it allowed a pilot to start the engine by flipping down the prop from behind the propellor, standing on the right side of the plane.

Yeah for sure! I reckon plenty of glider pilots would have been happy to help out with some advice for free. At least when they were filming real gliders some pilots would have been able to give ideas. But once the editing is underway, that's probably where the unrealistic stuff gets added
