Hey everyone so for this weeks episode I show you how a fiddlestick is used and why. Then Ill show you an alternative way to accomplish the same task that I like to use. These techniques are a bit of a risker way to retrieve a rope and in most cases id always recommend using a tag line with your main line backed up, check out that video here:

Quick Tip for this: make sure the end of your rope doesn’t have a fat mushroom of a DIY cut end. That could get things jammed on you. Give everything you do a practice run. Keep it low and slow. 🤙🏻

Didn't know the bowline method, like it! This means when the climbing rope comes down there are no knots to catch, worst case the tagline is snagged but not the rope :)

This strategy is a hoot. I feel like it does a lot to underscore the notion that the bowline's biggest party trick is being easy to untie after being loaded😂😂😂

Nice video. I do feel like this would be an option to use *if* you lost your fiddlestick, but I don’t really see any reason to use it *over* a fiddlestick. One Facebook commenter mentioned that a carabiner coming down hurts a lot more than a fiddlestick would. However, I do appreciate the ingenuity. For releasable rappels, I feel the CEM knot is often overlooked. It’s secure, easy to back up (only needs one carabiner at max), and doesn’t cause any gear to fly down the drop at the team. Fiddlestick/toggle method downsides: the stick can get stuck in a crack, the stone knot can sometimes twist and cause the pull side to be difficult/impossible to release. CEM downsides: there is essentially a large bight of rope that comes down the rappel, and could get stuck on a horn or bush.

the bowline method seems a bit safer and and seems like an easier retrieval compared to the fidlestick edit..I think I'd rather rely on a welded ring and another welded ring or a carabiner not breaking or jamming. I havent tried descending off of either method though

Question about the bowline method… How hard do you have to pull on the tagline to undo the bowline (both when weighted and unweighted)? Could the weight of a long tagline inadvertently undo your knot? Or could you accidentally undo your knot when fiddling with the tagline during the rappel (changing its path or throwing a stuck section of line)?
@BetaClimbers

that sounds like a good video idea where I can test that. but I think it all depends.. the rope type (slippery rope) or how heavy the rap load is ect.

To be honest, this seems sketchier to me than a fiddlestick. Your tension on the rope locks in the fiddlestick. Something tugging on your tag line with the bowline could untie it prematurely.
@tobiasbrewin4355
@tobiasbrewin4355 2 жыл бұрын
What's the advantage of this over a normal long rappel with a tagline? I'd just make a fig 8 on a bite at the top end of the rope so it can't slip through the rappel ring. Then put a biner on that bite and clip it to the rope coming down incase it slips through, then just attach your tag line to that same biner and you can pull the whole rope down when you get to the bottom.

I know this is an old video, but I hope you are still monitoring comments. I really like this method as the idea of a fiddlestick scares me, but what happens with the biner? You mention the ring is less dangerous, but doesn't the biner come flying down on the tagline? You see those fiddlesticks come flying down, but they are pretty lightweight. Thinking about a biner flying down, and I'm like man lookout... Maybe it's really no different though. In most blocking rappel retrieves the, biner is pulled down in a controlled fashion completely or mostly (either on the load strand itself, or because of resistance on the load strand as it goes up when biner wasn't also attached to the load).
@BetaClimbers
@BetaClimbers Жыл бұрын
Think I mentioned using two lightweight rings. I suppose the rings can even be made of wood or some other strong composite material but I’d be more worried of the ring braking and not getting my rope than getting hit by the ring. I was pretty good at dodge ball as a kid.
@jimsather6892
@jimsather6892 Жыл бұрын
@@BetaClimbers Ah yes, that's right, I do recall you saying to use two rings. This really seems like a great alternative, but to your knowledge, is there any information about what the ring might do the cinch and overall strength. Bowlines can roll/capsize a fair amount and I *thought* the standard bowline wasn't considered particularly safe to rappel from. That's why there are a bunch of variants AFAIK (e.g. Yosemite Bowline). All of the variants tend to involve additional passes through the nipping loop and collar to create a better "lock". It *seems* like ring could possibly loosen the lock, especially with cyclical loading (which is why the variants exist). This setup seems awesome and I want to trust it, but it's very unique and I haven't come across it before. I tried looking for break tests, slippage, etc. to no avail. Does such a thing exist? Would love to see a follow up video at some point. Very intrigued. Regardless, thank you!
@BetaClimbers
@BetaClimbers Жыл бұрын
@@jimsather6892 I would trust it but at the end of the day that’s me. To each their one, before KZfaq you would just read about such a thing or hear from a friend and test things out. I personally like it more than a fiddle stick but there are things that can go wrong. Like if the end of your rope has a mushroom end for example the bowline can be very difficult to come off. In this application it’s not like a tie in point on a harness that’s going to get jostled around so I’d say it works fine with this setup. But yeah continue your research and experimenting on your own in a safe environment and see if you become more comfortable. Happy sending! 👍🏻

6:12 Question - Why wouldn't you let the first 3 people rappel down without the fiddlestick, or the 2nd method you showed, and *_then_* you do the bowline, or fiddlestick, idea? Why risk it for the first 3, when they aren't going to be using the tag-line? Just curious. If you're going to be retying the bowline not either way, why use it for the first 3 (or how every many people before the last person rappels)?
@BetaClimbers
@BetaClimbers 2 жыл бұрын
If you had a group of four let say then you would be courteous and give for first 3 more security. I.E. a back up knot or clip. Then as the last person you take the risky rap. I mentioned retying because the knot could get pretty tight after a few raps which can make it harder to pull out when the time comes to retrieve.

@@nilsschenkel7149 just the fact that you do not haul the whole rope through your anchor. So this method resembles the fiddle stick method and may be also similar to the machrame' stitching method, if you use a tagline for the first pull loop side (tied to the main line. The tag line is not a part of the macrame).

@buckchow123 9 ай бұрын
I have not used the Beal Escaper, but because it is designed to release after being weighted/unweighted several times, I would be very concerned about using a Beal Escaper in a canyoneering environment, in which quite frequently: 1. the rappel line is weighted/unweighted several times, as multiple people rappel off of the line, and/or 2. the rappel line is weighted/unweighted several times for each rappeler, due to multiple stages in the rappel. I have been in many canyoneering situations where the Beal Escaper would have prematurely released.

Yet another bad FiddleStick video. (facepalm). Bowline system works well perhaps on some ropes. But rope on rope systems are inherently unreliable. "Dry" ropes might not release. Fuzz jobs might not release. We have 10s of thousands of uses of the FiddleStick at this point. We have had a few failures where it failed to release. No accidents I am aware of at this point (knock on wood). But people should not use it without understanding it, best obtained by person to person exchange of expertise.
