What’s at stake for Canada at the NATO summit

This year’s NATO summit comes at a critical moment. Pledges of support for Ukraine drum up questions about why Canada and other NATO members are lagging in their commitment to meet the 2 per cent defence spending threshold. Both Trudeau and Biden are looking to show strength after a rocky start to the summer.
Adrian Morrow is the Globe and Mail’s U.S. correspondent. He’s on the show to talk about the significance of this year’s NATO summit, and what’s at stake for Canada’s position on the world stage.
Clarification note:
This episode contains an inaccurate comparison of military aid spending between Canada and the United States. The numbers cited in the interview are a combination of military and civilian aid. Concerning military aid, the correct figures are $51billion from the US and $4 billion from Canada.

@@user-df9jn1ll9k Our military equipment is too old to be that effective. We are unable to patrol our own waters in the Arctic because we don’t have submarines (yet ) It’s going to be a big issue because China is seriously looking to ignore the fact that The Northwest Passage is in our National Waters. Soldiers are not paid nearly enough to attract people to join. It’s a shrinking military. What effective contribution are we able to offer NATO when needed? Certainly not at the level of Afghanistan. The world is rightly ticked off with us because we have not increased military funding so as to meet minimum increase of 2%. We said we could probably get there by 2034. By 2034? We’ve never met our obligation. Countries can no longer put things off anymore because this world is dangerous. We could have a great military again. But we need to be operating with modern equipment. The enemy is certainly going to have them. We need a substantial increase in number of military. It’s hard to fight if your army isn’t big enough. Ours is not. The government has ignored keeping our fighting ability what it was during the war and right after. Even in Korea. We had strength there too. My dad’s regiment (Strathconas) had the trust and respect of NATO to be on the front lines of possible invasion from East Germany. Back then tanks were the first line of defence. I have absolutely no doubt that we can be the military we used to be. I have no doubt that we can be a fighting force once again respected by the world. Modern equipment + needed numbers to fight effectively. That’s going to be more expensive than it should be because the government has not done the required “maintenance” to keep us where we were. Our military has been ignored and to our complete detriment. If we had done what we should have done we would have a respected military again. But when there so many members of NATO calling us out in front of the world for not meeting minimum of 2%, I do not hold my head up high for that. We CAN do better than that. We NEED to do better, because it is a very precarious world. We need to be strong and ready to step up. Right now we are anything but.

This is through 6 Liberal and 4 COnservative Prime Ministers. This issue is not politicial and relates directly to Canadian attitudes. Making it political fodder for the sole purpose of attacking Trudeau is disrespectful of its level of importance and completely ignores its cause.

Your title is broken. What's at stake for Canada at the NATO summit would list "what is at stake", it would not ask why the people in charge are acting out of fear and little else. Look, I fear nukes, acting like I do is dumb, because I also fear asteroids. Can I, a lowly minimum wage earner, launch a nuke, or stop a launched nuke or stop an asteroid? No, I cannot. So acting out that fear is a waste of time. The pragmatism does not exist. Perhaps those who think money can buy everything see things differently, that would explain why they think seeding fear of Trump is a good idea(it's not). But your title is broken. If you want to defeat the Orange Benito, it is quite easy, don't give him room to breath. Talk about everything else.
