The Philippines fought for its rights and won but the UN has to assert that not the Philippines alone. Its the UN that is doing nothing.

Recently they actually showed hostility to Filipino fishermen who were STILL in the Philippine Economic Zone, just trying to make a living, showing up in their vessels with missiles and following the fishermen.

Man, I miss the simpler times when Southeast Asian kingdoms and tribes used to traverse along the West Philippine Sea to raid the coastal towns of mainland East Asia CENTURIES BEFORE any Chinese state had a proper navy. (Even before the reign of the Ming dynasty). The waters of Southeast Asia BELONG to the SOUTHEAST ASIAN COUNTRIES.

The alarming militarization rate of China and their growing aggressive stance in the South China Sea and neighboring ASEAN countries despite their rhetoric of non-aggression is appaling. US have hastily withdrawn troops in Afganistan, sent 2 nuclear submarines to SCS for the first time and the formation of QUAD and strengthening ties with ASEAN. Do you think US will let China easily takeover its supremacy? I dont think so. If you want peace, prepare for war.

Its funny how they selectively use UNCLOS, they say it doesn't apply to the West Philippines Sea but invoke it against Japan.

technically if you plot the EEZ 200 nautical miles of every country's coastline on the map, some boundaries really overlaps. In the case of China and Vietnam they are entitled to have another 200 miles (400 in total) because of their continental shelf and the overlapping increases. Now if you build an island in the middle of the sea, your EEZ will again be extended. There are really gray areas in that UNCLOS and this really translate to disputes.

I'm scared that the South China Sea dispute is just a taste for what's to come on resource scarcity on a global scale. For hundreds of years the competition for resources have always been a trigger for war. Who's to say that the depleting resources in the world (e.g., due to overconsumerism and global development) won't lead to even more conflict in the future?

China building military bases on Islands in its own backyard (where Chinese have been using for centuries before anyone else were there) it's "unacceptable for the United States." While US has built 400 military bases with nukes aiming at China, encircling China.

I'd just like to point out that most of the smaller Asian countries who are competing with China for the South China Sea have American naval bases. No world power would want USA warships in their backyard. Rather than the issue being that China just wants to hog resources and bully other people, there is also another perspective that China wants to take countermeasures against USA basically having naval bases all over Asia. How would USA feel if China had several hundred naval bases in the Caribbean islands? China should really do a better job being friends with its neighbors but when there are potential threats outside your yard, you would at least want to put a safety boundary/zone for yourself in case they decided to storm you.

You guys clearly stated that in many cases, China's claim to the 'South China Sea' was dismissed or rejected, but why do you still refer it as that? Wouldnt i dont know, like West Phillipine Sea or the actual internationally acknowledged name to it better to use as reffering to it?

Some mistakes or missing informations here: - Taiwan is not a country - The ROC aka Taiwan has long had an 11-dash line - Not only China had disputes with its neighbours. The other ones have them too (especially Vietnam and the PH) - Where is the proof, that the constructions on the islands are used for military purposes?

Those who have studied sea power theory and understand modern finance all know that the United States is for hegemony, not for justice. When you talk about Taiwan, it seems that no country has diplomatic relations with Taiwan. At least your report should be in line with the diplomatic reality of your country.

Philippines has LEGAL rights to South China Sea AND 400 Filipinos actually live there in Spratly Islands (Pag-asa Island / Thitu Island) for decades. None of the other countries who falsely claim it as theirs live in South China Sea.

Correction: China not once controlled it (before). They were able to only take it now because of their upgraded naval infrastracture.

I love how Vietnam fight for their seas. Some people in my country fight for it too but their influence and backing were not much as the one who has more which is pretty sad. If China succeeded, then it’s neighboring countries won’t be able to regain their rights on their seas anymore. UNCLOS should’ve stand their ground and do what they have to do.

In this video it should be noted that the countries in the ASEAN group that didn´t want to irritate Chine are not the ones with any interest in the South China Sea but the ones who are downriver of China along the river Mekong, namely Thailand, Laos & Cambodia. The exception being Vietnam who is a major player in the S.C.S. & also part of the Mekong group.

Thank you for the video. Main points I guess are 1. South China sea dispute is insidious. And the on-going pandemic has made the ASEAN people put this dispute at the back seat to deal with the pandemic instead. 2. China has stood for thousand of years. If history will tell us what'll happen, one should look at the dedication of the Qin dynasty that made the warring states into one big imperial country. Pres. Duterte candidly admitted in his recent speech that the Philippines (apparently) lost some its islands in the S.China sea because it followed the directive of Pres. Obama to back off from the disputed waters while China did not comply and stood in its ground. They did not leave and continued to do reclamation projects that we can now see today. Some people in the Phils are saying, Vietnam has claimed even more islands in the S. China sea than China. So, it is not just China as the one big bully but all of the ASEAN countries are like siblings trying to claim their inheritance, some are aggressive, some are not. 3. The almost unspoken word in this video, WAR. The only way to resolve (actually, just escalate) the issue is for one of the ASEAN countries to fight for its claim by declaring war. Pres. Duterte admitted even during his presidential campaign that it is the most likely solution but he will not go to war. Nobody wins in a war. Because the likely situation for us, SE Asians, is we would become the next Middle East-the middle of world conflicts. So, if these disputed islands are not really rich in oil, we (Pinoys) might as well not be aggressive, which seems to be the case. Recently approved energy projects are geothermal powerplants and some local energy cooperatives are building their own solar farms. If it's for fish resource, we must repopulate our nearest coastlines. We have been doing distant-water fishing and importing since the fish pop'n went down in the 80s, pushing us further into the South China sea. It is because we're not doing sustainable fishing and consuming fish even at young stage. Not to mention our growing pop'n. It is pandemic, but the lockdowns only resulted to lost jobs and pregnant women 😅. Learn family planning! The hope we can see is that China will learn to compromise. It's been promoting its image by funding international media. Gentrification is sooner or later will be on its way to China. It can turn to Myanmar (or had already?) but there is unrest in that place now. But it can turn to the Philippines, considering we are the gateway to the Pacific Ocean, the other-side of the trading world. I hope the Philippines will play the game well. And hope that the leaders will always put at the front of their minds that no sacrifice is too great for the things we want. If we want the islands to be solely ours, what can we sacrifice? If we want peace, what can we sacrifice?

If the politicians were all required to fight in the front lines we'd have less wars if any.
