I’m sorry. I’m sure the traffic is up but how much of that is shoplifting and/or protesting kids and destitute migrants? It’s not the kind of traffic retailers are looking for. You’d be crazy to sign long-term lease down there, at least until the city has a stable mayor. And, by that time, it will probably be too late.

A lot of big boxes are moving into the neighborhoods. Burlington is coming to Edgewater. There's the Clybourn / North section with shopping. It's toooo congested downtown. When I shop, I go away from downtown. Only come downtown for doctor apptments. the tourists LOVE downtown Chi, but we regulars can find stores closer to home.

You clearly don't live in Chicago. All the migrants are either on the West or North side. Hardly any of them are downtown. How can people shoplift empty store fronts??? And what protesting?

I'm sure a lot of retailers are more concerned with the possibility of a repeat of what happened during the pandemic. The Loop has traditionally been seen as a business district, and what little residential space there doesn't do much to stop it from feeling like a ghost town most nights. The best thing the city could do would be to allow for redistricting, or mixed use, of vacant office buildings to add a permanent population to the area. This way, in the case of another lockdown, there is a native population to the area that can provide some kind of basic traffic. This would also allow for the appearance of more common chains to the area such as grocery stores, pharmacies, or medical offices.

The smash and grab, with people crashing stolen cars into stores and a crew of thieves stealing as much merchandise as possible is probably a pretty good reason to not have any stores returning to the Magnificent Mile.

Same here. I do miss the city itself, but it’s changed so much for the worst that it’s not worth it to me. The soullessness and crime is insane since 2020. Criminals are WAY too bold and soulless nowadays. And many of the city politicians enable them on purpose.

Yes, there is a dollar to be made. But you’re going to lose all those dollars when they ram a car through your store at night and steal everything.

1. Shoplifting/robbery. 2. No one lives downtown. 3. The prices in downtown are ridiculous. 4. The shops are solely for tourists. 5. Getting around downtown sucks. If your driving there's nonstop traffic and you have to pay for parking (~$45) wherever you go. If you're walking, you are constantly waiting at 6 lane intersections every fuckin block.

The Bankers charge so much to rent downtown. It's all about money for them. Where does that money go? Yes, you guessed it. They make profits. It goes into their pocket. I guess when you live in a big city then your prices would be higher. That's why Corporations move out and go south. The Taxes are high and as you know Corporations don't want to pay Taxes already.

As a real resident of Chicago, places like Oak Brook Center and Westfield Old Orchard is luring all the locals away from downtown. It's open air, you don't have to worry about traffic, there are activities for children to do in the play area and there are plenty of shops. We go there frequently and I spend quite a bit. Could never afford to live in Oak Brook but the mall is awesome.
