For me it's the lack of community, while applying for a film school/being a uni drop out. No irl teachers or fellow art students to receive feedback from/share the work/studies with ☕🦔 I think the lack of community seems to increase the temptation to procrastinate even more, especially the studying the most challenging topics in filmmaking. You become comfortable in your own zone, nobody questions your views or creations. Creating can become just finding for new ideas, never really seeing the ideas through. Thankfully, the past episodes you made on diy art school & failing (ooo the failing episode I return often) have been specially useful to keep up the motivation to learn, and to try again and again to fight the "blocks". ...Then again just too little sleep/bad diet are perhaps the daily ways to lose your creative state of mind, even if you were self-sufficient or in amazing school in the first place☕☕🦔 P.S ages ago when I commented to thank Stand and Marshall for these really informative, fun podcasts I forgot to acknowledge the entire Draftsmen team, the editors and camera crew and all, really nice work☕🦔 many happy hedgehogs to you from Finland!

Many thanks to both of you for discussing my book. Great job!! So fun to watch you guys mixing play with business. Most of the insights in the book came from my 50 years in visual communication. I wrote the book that I wished I had in college, none of this was presented to me in my schooling, just acquired through experience. The mind map or thought molecule, in the beginning, was how I started considering how to set up the book and how everything connected. I still have the original on a dry erase board. I never had kids though I do have a 13-year-old in my life through my girlfriend so I finally have someone who is on my intellectual level. I did have parents (Dad was the critical thinker, Mom was the creative thinker) who encouraged me through example and experience. The tech the brain snatcher thing is more directed at apps, not tech itself. I have an iPad and paint programs. And I also used an airbrush for about the first 25 years of my mixed bag career.

@draftsmen Interview Mr. Moore and have him speak on his work and next time DO NOT review a book if you haven't read the whole thing. By reading the whole whole book you can ask better questions and give better insights. Find a way to Keep the podcast going it's extremely useful and I'm sure you can find more things to discuss. I appreciate all the info you all put out there thanks

Almost forgot about the proximity to water as an influence. Money tends to follow water and by extension a diversity in demographics, more different kinds of people = broader range of ideas and thought, also a larger tourism industry (which tends to follow water) means more galleries and arts programs. Other natural draws can do the same. Not to mention that if you grow up around water, more often than not you are going to spend a lot more time in and around it which means a greater awareness of nature and the environment. These things aren't always true, there are plenty of land-locked metropolis environments, but are often true.

I accidentally discovered the solution to the sped up demos last week when I decided to give the time-lapse function on my phone a try. It was right after I purchased a phone holder that attaches to my easel, that I made a set up where the phone is 1ft away from the paper to film the full A5 portrait that I was going to sketch and paint in watercolour. This made it very awkward to work on as I wasn't used to having a huge phone right in the way of my view of the artwork and I struggled a lot. At the end of the sketch and the underpainting, I took a look at my phone to review the time-lapse that was filmed as I thought it would look really awkward. However, I was very surprised at how smooth the process looked despite the struggle I went through. It made me realise that all these "professional" looking sped up videos gave the false impression of "effortlessness" when it comes to an artist's process and that there's way more going on behind the scenes than you would've imagined. So if anyone is curious, they should give this a go.

My main block at the moment and for the past few years is my heath, I haven't been well enough to go to uni or work and I have all these ideas and inspiration but no energy to do it :/ luckily these podcasts keep me feeling slightly productive 🙂

I had this problem. Just yell yourself to do a solid 5 mins of work, then if you feel up to it, go and do more. The best way is to not time yourself and get lost in the work. You're better than this!

It's insane how most of the episodes came out right when I needed them! I'm struggling a lot with art for the past few months and this episode opened my mind for good, can't wait for the solutions!

My main problem with creativity and any long term project is that I lose steam I if don't finish the thing I set out to do in a couple of days and it completely loses its initial luster that motivated me to begin working on it, then begins the phase of self-doubt and wondering aimlessly (or wandering, still works), am I just a quitter or was that thing not that interesting to begin with and I only noticed now, either way it's a very annoying block that keeps getting in my way of completing any long term art project, a drawing or two I can manage, but anything that requires long term planning ends up getting abandoned in early stage if it's going to take a couple of weeks/months to complete (like a comic or an art project involving multiple drawings with a common theme)

I had a problem (its still difficult for me to spend more than a day on an illustration, but I'm working on it). For me I realized the block came from fear or not feeling like what I was doing was anywhere near my expectations. So when I feel the spark fade I check what in my comic or illustration made me feel that way, figure out the problem, then find resources to help me find a solution or jog my mind for a solution. Rinsr and repeat. For example, I got to a school for manga andI showed my teacher my manga and he said it was dull and no publisher would accept it like this. It hurt me a lot so I went back to the manga I loved and figured out why I loved it. Came back to my manga and fixed it and showed my teacher and he said he really enjoyed it although its still messy. I am still aware of the problems and what I can research (I made a list of stuff I didn't like and how to fix it). Go into the project knowing it will suck and you can fix it later with the only goal being to finish and you can finish it.

I don't think there is a magical solution to this. I've fallen into the same trap. I still finish long winded projects sometimes but it can take ages. You need someone who holds you accountable or some kind of structure. Group projects are great, even if people are a pain. But if it's only you and abandoning it has no ill effects, you are almost guaranteed to stop. Unless.. this long project consists of lots of interesting small projects which keep you interested. Unfortunately with the way the world works.. it has to be hard to pay.

@@hgzmatt Agreed, but it's quite a curse when you have this issue and you prefer to work alone (and don't have time to take art courses in a university or something because of your day job)

@@AscendantStoic I get it.. the kind of art I like to do personally is not the one I get paid to do. So I run into the same issues. At the moment my goal is just to do something as often as possible. That way I'll still make progress. I wish there was a better way. Some people go on Discord with like minded people and work that way to get a bit of that accountability. Or you build a routine where it doesn't count how much you progress, but that you sit down at all and start. And usually it will take off from there. But none of it is fool proof.

My biggest block right now is stress from an unplanned move with limited options for where and limited resources that don’t match the availability in the area. By the new year I hope it will all be solved one way or another. Looking forward for this episode to get help!

I love abstract art, but I don't do abstracts very often because I know that most people (specifically my family and friends) don't "get" it or appreciate it. That the whole "My 5 year old could make this" comment really grates my nerves. It's true about fear and embarrassment being a big blocker!

Keep on moving you are on a path! I would like to say I'm the opposite when I started drawing I only draw abstract . It's whatever came to my mind. I had to stop this completely for a year and learn fundamental. Now I'm in my 4 years of drawing . Sometimes I mixed them both . If I want to get more of my performance I only draw abstract idea. Abstract drawing is so good you can express mor. Keep it up!

The part where you can clear out a college classroom by playing a children’s album, that part got me. I can very much relate, 12 years ago I was ashamed and embarrassed to obsess about cartoons aimed at 7-12 year olds (even though my kids were that age, haha). It’s taken me 7 years to work through that block and my art has improved 10 fold, from just drawing things I love in what little free time I can get as a single Mom.

Right now, my block is a mixture of disappointment, listlessness, and a lack of faith. I can't put my energy into anything because it feels like I'm going to suffer betrayal again. I want to get out of this hole, but the abuse just keeps coming; "doesn't rain unless it pours" and all that.

I struggle with the same thing. I think it happens when you know a drawing is off but you don't know why or maybe you do but you're just so used to bad drawings that you think you can't do better. I think the key is to develop an objective critical eye and then learn to apply it to your own work. Look up artists who do draw-overs and critiques and see what kinds of mistakes they notice. Then try it for yourself. Find some mediocre art by other people and make a list of all the mistakes they made and how you would fix them. Then apply those observations to your own art. You'll still have that pain of knowing that it doesn't look good, but at least you'll know why now and you'll be able to fix it. Don't worry about getting the drawing right on your first try. That'll happen the more mindful you become of the mistakes you tend to make and you can avoid them. Iterate until you're satisfied. Learn to laugh at your mistakes rather than beating yourself up over them. Don't let perfection hold your happiness hostage. Take pride in progress but don't become arrogant enough to think you don't need to critique your own work. If you do, the process starts all over again. I hope that helps. Good luck!

@Marshall: Burnout What you were experiencing with your terrible burnout, with a super sleepless workweek, has really started to affect me recently. I am currently doing freelance contract work with very time sensitive work that requires me to use an incredible amount of energy. Last month there were three weeks where I couldn't use a writing a utensil, pencil, or do anything visually creative. It was terrible. I am financially stressed for being out of work for that amount of time. On top of that emotionally drained and without a strong network of people to fall back on or see my decline. It's very stressful. But in the end, we are here and I am working hard again because I can be homeless and without or I can continue to suffer, make adjustments and build bridges to where I want to be. I may not have my creativity back just yet, but at least I am practicing my skills and getting work done. But things are going to have to change in order for me to be healthy creatively, financially, and emotionally. Thank you both for sharing and providing commentary on the life of creatives.

I think ego could breed fear on you, you can think you're very good at something and that in turn makes failing sort of thougher fall, so when you aim at something considering you'll quite probably "fail" you're kind of defying ego about how good you are at things.

At the moment it would have to be time. Although it’s not a real excuse, interruptions and other priorities such as finance and parenting can halt creativity.

on technology: you either build up with basic tools, or cut back the results of sophisticated tools. Photo manipulation would be one example of technology front-loading information that you are then obliged to remove to arrive at a good art work. Most photo manipulations fail at this imo, because it is too tempting to simply sign off on something if it seems sophisticated, even though it fails at being creatively integrated. Personally I also believe that you will be more or less unable to cut down information successfully without the 'other side' of skills (how to do something like this via 'building up')

The division of labour thing.. I'm not sure that's a good thing for creativity. There was a time where it might have made sense to split it up into different roles.. but nowadays? I think it has gone too far. Everything has become extremely complex, so that it always requires large teams. Personally I strive when I have a variety of things to do. I really hate the assembly line kind of thinking where you have one task and you just keep on doing it. Creativity comes out when you can explore different topics. Maybe from a production standpoint there is a time to be creative and a time to produce.. but that's another story.

The Secret is nonsense honestly. Better to be Stoic about your art, not rely on self-help myth that causes more suffering than actual help. I will say the lessons of books like Richard Wiseman's 'Luck Factor' or Danny Wallace's 'Yes Man', which will probably help you spot opportunities, either for artistic development or comission. If you really feel you need help, Derren Brown's 'Happy' will do the job far better.
