2 жыл бұрын

Formula 1® drivers have always prided themselves on being able to conquer street circuits where there is no margin for error.
So what's actually changed around Albert Park? What do the changes mean for lap times and Sunday afternoon?
In Episode 2, we hit the circuit and take a detailed look at the new track layout, exploring all the reasons why fans (both in attendance and around the world), are poised to be the big winners with the modifications to the new track.
The new circuit sees the the track measure 23-metres shorter than its predecessor, with 14 corners, not 16 with lap times set to be reduced by approximately five-seconds per lap.
In a nod to the circuit's history and with Sunday racing in mind, Albert Park's signature sequence of turns have not been touched with the increased speed and widening of corners set to see more mistakes, encourage overtaking and see more aggressive driving.
This is Episode 2 of a four-part series, exclusive to the Australian Grand Prix’s KZfaq Channel, detailing what has been described as the most significant facelift of the Albert Park Circuit in the event's 25-year history.
FUTURE EPISODES in the series:
Episode 3: Albert Park's New High Speed Straight
7 February 2022
In Episode 3, we finish our virtual lap of the circuit including the chicanes of turns 9 & 10, additional DRS zone and new viewing opportunities for fans. Episode 3 also details the benefits to the local community that go hand-in-hand with the work done on-track, and nearby park amenities.

Really looking forward to seeing the track this year - it looks like the track is going to be fantastic. Australia has been sorely missed by F1 fans globally. It must *always* be on the calendar! I don't care what time I have to get up to watch it, though sadly these days, I can't afford to pay for the full race on Sky. I just have to make sure I miss all news reports in the morning until I get, what is to be fair, a pretty comprehensive "highlights" programme. But when I had it live, 4am, my alarm would go off and I'd head for the kettle, despite there being a full repeat at the usual post-Sunday lunch spot, and for a number of years, despite having been up during the night with one of my babies! I was happy to forgo those hours of needed sleep - just once a year, though 😂. It was part of the excitement of ending or starting the F1 year. I'll never forget Martin Brundle's "launch", and how he ran back to the pits to get the T car. Then he broke down after going so well! Heartbreaking!

@revirdkcalb
@revirdkcalb 2 жыл бұрын
DRS overtakes are pretty much all we have anyways. At least it's an overtake, which with DRS or not, was quite a rarity in Australia before. Even with the new regs and cars, I still don't think we will see too many overtakes outside of DRS zones. New cars should make it easy to follow other cars through corners, so that they can be overtaken in the DRS zone. So, actually we might see even more DRS overtakes than before.

@KepleroGT

@@revirdkcalb Overtaking in a non-DRS section is completely useless when the other guy's gonna get past you with little effort. At the very minimum the effect should be significantly reduced. If you can't overtake a car that's slower than you then you don't deserve to.

I seem to be the only person that doesn't think this layout will make for more exciting racing. I am dead set it will do the opposite... they've got rid of the most challenging, tight and slow corners with the heaviest braking zones and made them faster with less braking, basically made a track of chicanes.. Albert Park was already notorious for boring racing with trains of cars and not much overtaking and they've just deleted the best corners on tje track FOR overtaking. What it needs (in my opinion) is yes widening of some corner entries, but TIGHTENING of the apex to encourage overtaking into and out of corners with more chance of lock ups and mistakes.. This layout to me has just made it faster, not better for RACING!

So by widening 1 and 3 you’ve increased the apex speed, in - turn reduces the braking zone … so it will be even harder to overtake into those corners. Turn 6 will now have 0 chance of an overtake. Essentially now there is 1 overtaking point on the circuit at the old turn 13 and with drs a non exciting one at that
@JoshyStuart
@JoshyStuart 2 жыл бұрын
I think making T1 faster will mean you can stay closer up to T3 and then T3 being wider leaves more room to go around the outside, or dive to the inside. I think it is going to make things much more exciting.
@ibast1
@ibast1 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly. Rounding off corners makes overtaking less likely, not more. This is just a propaganda piece. Racing has always been bad at this circuit and it will be even worse now. And they've got away with it in the past because it was the first race of the season and people are more focused on other drama. Now the cars, teams and drivers will be settled down and it will be an obvious snooze fest. Victoria should either build a proper race circuit or give the race to another state.

I think with the wider entry it means there's more to defend, therefore if you defend the inside, there's more opportunity to brake later and send it round the outside. I think T3 is the one to watch now; DRS main straight, faster T1 entry, then DRS from T2 and a wider entry into T3. That will be very hard to defend against IMO.

The changes to turns 6, 9-10 don't feel right, normally, turn 6 properly is a corner where the driver made the difference, regardless of setup and what car you're driving so if you pulled it off, you'd have a good run to 9-10, where you could dive-bomb it, but now, turn 6 is a corner where the car makes the difference, and having a long flat run rather than a proper overtaking spot, is just plain and boring imo. Then again, I could be wrong, we'll just have to see.

Yeah I have to agree about turn 6, but the only passes over the last 15 years at T9 were cars getting lapped. Making opportunities for cars to get ahead before the fast T11-12 or close up before then and get a good run into T13 will make for exciting racing, I think.

The lead to the fastest left and right is very bumpy after seeing Leclerc's onboard pole lap, I am not sure it that's any good for slipstreaming.

Think all the circuits are losing their character with all the quick turns. I understand the cars are getting wider, but technical corners are becoming less common and the circuits less memorable. More overtaking’s happening yes, but overtaking’s not exciting anymore. My opinion, at least.

Is that the "mountain" track. That would be spectacular but F1 would never agree to race there. Perhaps an exhibition "race", maybe a time trial, just to see the cars running there?

That's a great question - first time we've been asked that. We don't have confirmation just yet, although i'm sure it will be available (along with race start time) in due course.

According to the new length given in F1's website (5.279 km), it should be (as 305/5.279 = 57.77 which gets rounded up to 58 to cross 305 km)

these changes will make little difference. taking out turns 9 and 10 and effectively straightening 6 and 7 will no make it flat out from turn 4 to the new turn 11. i dont see it being good in the back portion of the track! my opinion only.
