What is going on with the motorcycle market? Is it improving, ending, in a slump? Let me know your thoughts. (The comma in decisions was deliberate as a tongue-in-cheek dig at politicians intelligence).

Millennials don't seem to be interested in riding motorcycles. Baby Boomers like myself who have been riding motorcycles for decades are now in our late sixties and seventies. I'm now 68 and have just purchased a new BSA Gold Star 650 as a stablemate for my Harley Sportster, will this be my last new motorcycle, I wonder. So long as I can get my leg over the seat of a motorcycle, I will keep on riding.

Factors in the demise of motorcycling include: a ridiculous obstacle course to get a license, negative propaganda against bikes, plunging used values, rising insurance premiums, theft, potholes, price of gear, lack of local bike shops, electric bicycles and scooters, bad weather (of which we've had lots in 2023/24). It's mainly an old man's game, in contrast to when those old men started out and biking was a young guy's hobby. Utility riding and commuting is a fraction of what it was, and then largely on cheap scooters.

I doubt that the "disaster of Liz Truss' budget" had any effect whatsoever. None of the changes were implemented and I doubt not 1% of motorcyclists could iterate a single issue which had an effect on them. I suspect the simpler answer is the aging population of motorcyclists and difficulty and cost of getting a motorcycle licence for young riders. That latter will only get worse under a nanny state which is what we will have after the next election. For decades, there has been a cohort of Labour MPs who are determined to limit motorcycle usage and in some cases, an outright ban of them.

Try looking at the Insurance !!!! It's a complete joke, and a total rip off 😞 63 yrs old, 20+ years held bike licence, looked up insurance for a Royal Enfield Meteor 650. Guess how much without a Garage? £2,800+ annually. WITH garage £580+ This needs to be investigated because it simply prices bikes out of the market. Similar prices for a Vulcan 900. Neither bike is a rocket ship. I can't even GET a quote for a Fireblade or an R1. I guess my riding days are now over 😞

Honestly the 90's 2000's they had it right. Bikes had way more performance than what was needed without all this unnecessary tech were affordable. Also motorcycling doesn't get the coverage it deserves on free or affordable media outlets. Track ticket prices have skyrocketed so less people are going to the track to see the bikes they would purchase as OTR versions of. Combine all of this with standard of living crisis, inflation, and a lack of prosperity in addition to just running and maintaining a car or two makes that joyful toy for the weekends and sunny days just out of reach for most. My opinion anyway. Used to work for Motorcycle City back in the day.... we sold out of the showroom around 20-30 brand new bikes a week. Friends still in the trade are talking 3 bikes a week now and none of their young staff think that what we did in the 90's is even possible.

I think insurance going up and prices going up so much have pushed folk to lower cc models, 125s are less popular for yoof as they like to ride surrons in balaclavas with no insurance, being able to wheelie with ya mates has more appeal if your not paying insurance, nostalgia being popular with retro bikes and recently retro race bikes are still a niche market, the budget bikes like Enfields and the new 400 triumphs are flying out the doors so no doubt other big brands will follow suit.

insuring even a small 125 cc can be as expensive as insuring a big car now, im 51 yrs old with a full car licence 32 yrs driving experience, and i looked up insuring a yamaha mt125 if i took a cbt, and the cheapest i could find was 6 - 800 quid . thats shocking. after 32 yrs driving a car i know how to read a road and traffic yet insurance is as if in 16yrs old on a moped with no road experience ? we are getting priced out of motorcycling. and cars making private transport extortionate tempting to force us all on public transsport. in essence having to live by time tables, taking our freedom to go where we want whenever we want, its the start of a very controlled future, the next is doing away with cash so they can monitor where every single penny goes to, its all part of global control. one way to get people of the road is by extorting the fees to own private transport. this is just the beginning folks.

The larger bikes (petrol and electric) are getting so expensive that dealers need to organise good leasing terms, like the new car sales market. Work out the running costs on PCP or hire purchase. Calculate the cost of PCP + fuel for the type of journeys you want to make. For city delivery drivers it is cheaper to run a small electric scooter or motorbike than a 125. But that isn't yet the case for bigger bikes with lower annual mileage.

The price of big bikes is ridiculous. I have five bikes ranging from 125 to 850 cc. Together they cost less than my neighbour's BMW GS which he rides once a week for a couple of hours. Insurance is only part of the story. My multi bike insurance is £250 a year fully comp. I think most older riders have done the "by a bigger bike" thing and are now in the other side of the bell curve and realise that a smaller capacity and lighter bike can be just as satisfying.

I'm happy with my Suzuki cruiser, I've had it now for 14 year and it still draws 65 to the gallon the only reason I wish to down size and venture in to the 250 - 500 cc bracket is down to needing something a bit nippier at commute time locally, and as I travel the cruiser is ideal for those lengthier runs. As for electric, why would I expose myself to the risk of not being able to charge as and when needed especially as I live in a rural area, I mean that in itself defies the logic of jumping in the saddle and nipping of out to see the mates at my convenience, have you seen the near punch-ups at the car charging points in the towns between electric car drivers? And as some of the other peeps in the comments have pointed out the costs are rising and it does seem to me that the promoting benefits of smaller cheaper to run vehicles that produce less wear and tear to the roads not churning out the pollution a car does, is being organised by people who in winter see one snowflake touch the ground then insist on going home because they don't want to get snowed in.

Increasing costs, mainly insurance and the licensing system, are delaying new riders but having been to the test centres several times recently, there is a steady stream of CBT and full license riders going through. The young riders are mostly starting at 19 but there are 16 year olds learning on 50cc scooters being bank rolled by mum and dad who are usually bikers themselves. I live in a high bike area, North Devon and there are still plenty of bikes around. We have 4 bikes in our garage and the last two were second hand.

The problem with motorcycles now (especially in Britain) is the laws! When you're 16 you can ride 50cc, when you're 17 125cc. If you want a bigger bike, you have to do a full test. BUT...when you're 17 you can do you're car test and buy any car you want (if you can afford it). Which makes absolutely no sense! The law needs to change or the bike market will die!

As far as electric and 2 wheels are concerned I've been looking at the yamaha NEO-S its only a 50cc equivalent. If you get the dual battery version its £3100 and it goes 44-50miles. Thats not bad for a moped when it only goes 30mph and the key for me is keeping to the smaller roads when most are 30mph or 20mph anyway. Can still just change at a friends house only 23p to charge a battery up. Anything bigger or more powerful and the numbers dont add up. The price is ok the weight ok at 90kg. Only range is questionable. But a big electric motorbike still has poor range and is to heavy and to expensive. Electric cars are also not great when it comes to cost weight and range. But at least the weight of a car is not as much of a problem as weight of a motorbike.

Haven't got a use for anything much larger and the 125cc stuff or 20 bhp leave you struggling to get past anything. Electric motorcycles are waiting for more energy dense battery tech to come along to provide decent range and lower the cost it's a matter of time and technology catching up if you consider the weight of battery as a% of overall weight its coming just not now even the best electric bicycles only get yo 50-60 miles.

I want to get back on 2 wheels after a 20 year break, Quite frankly it's all too expensive and dangerous on the roads and I'm getting put off by all the negativity surrounding motorcycles out there. Insurance is high, theft is rife, poor drivers and terrible roads and of course busy busy roads with roadworks everywhere. Where is the fun in that? I have ebikes which require no insurance tax or MOT and I can take them off road all over the place away from traffic and to some beautiful places, not have to leave them unattended whilst I explore the area if I just ride around, added bonus if I run out of charge I can still cycle home. Yet I still fancy getting a motorbike just for feeling of speed and freedome when the roads allow but if I buy a bike and ride it for a bit and then decide to get rid who will buy it? I've been watching some bikes that I'm interested in and they have not sold in years, literally just sitting rotting cause no one wants them..... I'd love a zero SR or a Harley livewire for a bit of local fun but wow the price and the insurance!!! Other bike I fancy is fjr1300 for some long trips, insurance not too bad on that and price used is reasonable but still tax £110 , new tyre every 3 to 5k miles , annual service etc etc , it's not a cheap toy.... Older riders dying, the living ones looking bewildered at robotic styled overly complicated bikes aimed at much younger riders in other countries, riders we no longer have. No wonder smaller bikes & retros are selling. I'm 60, both my lads have been around my bikes all their lives, neither wants the hassle of gaining a license though....

Factor in hybrid and hydrogen engines and people confused over the usefulness of electric and the figures of motorcycles 🏍️ sales going down makes sense. Them factor in that bikers already only make 6% of road users but fatalities in accident is 80% it makes sense. Then factor in for a new car relative to size and practicality bikes seem over priced. My personal experience of putting me off biking is the constant ripping off from the Chinese 🇨🇳 motorcycle dealerships on new bikes. Factor in the green agenda and suddenly bikes still makes sense 😮all very confusing as all the trains are going electric and all the delivery guys use DIY electric bicycles 🚲 but I doubt maritime or aviation will go electric or will it ?

The road tax needs to be done differently for motorcycles. Let the ride through LTN's let them in all the bus lanes. And sort out parking for motorbikes. We want ground anchors maybe a chain attached to a post and cctv. I'm sure motorcycles could be part of future transport.

@@chrishart8548 I know-i have been doing food deliveries in my town for the last 10 years on bikes and they have red routes where the electric trams were 100 years ago and believe me by the number of tickets I have had and mentioning these things to the council they are not one bit interested-i have also read there transport strategy till 2040 with things about electric shuttle buses and electric charging drone bays for delivery drones-the world is going mad and no one is in touch with the reality of these things-i am also part and a member of Reading cycle campaign and these issue are flagrantly being ignored maybe because of the consecutive austerity measures over the years, what I find interesting though is Reading the Apple green report who have invested heavily in green energy projects like solar and wind farms and having a gross domestic produce higher then the United States government and being a very young company in relation has a zero impact carbon footprint-will the governments ever reach this-i think the answer is a resounding no

Was generally an informative vid, until you got to the silly and somewhat childish comment on people not knowing what they’re offended by…… pretty sure they know, and pretty sure you know too. Was literally about to subscribe until I heard that. Regarding electric, I think you are right that it’s the time to charge them that’s the issue - I’d have bought at least one by now, but charging infrastructure and inconvenience just detracts from all convenience and “spur of the moment” fun. ADV’s that can beat a sports bike, and that are just so good in every way, apart from wind noise around the lid, with wide, easy bars, some even look cool, with all the tech investment, just beg the question as to why buy anything else.

If you don't want to subscribe because I have had enough of the 'trend' that is being offended by everything society we live in then fair enough. Even though it is true. So many of the eants and protests around today are not thought through discussions, Unrealistic arguments and smothered with hypocrisy.

@@motorsforthemasses when you make an assertion that it’s true, then to have any credibility you should substantiate that assertion, otherwise you just come across as one of the bitter regressives who is just kneejerking insults out of stubborn pride and fear of change. There’s no doubt some overplay their hand on “awareness”, for personal gain or avoidance of accountability, but you said it in the context of environmental protection, so maybe you feel human driven climate change is a scam, in spite of the exponential population growth, then maybe tell us why. If you’ve ever flown across the US, Europe, Southern Asia or the Far East, have you never looked out of the window and realised that for thousands of miles it’s impossible not to see the scaring of human activity on the earth, or the giant floating trash islands in the pacific (example link added below), or that the most isolated islands on the planet have beaches covered in discarded fishing equipment, then surely you can see the kids/folk you are specifically ripping into, have a very good point. I love motors and have 4 bikes and several cars, but even I know they are right, and that I have to be part of the change in order to make my fun and adventures more sustainable. You may say you aren’t interested in this discussion, but you are the one who raised it and put it out there. theoceancleanup.com/great-pacific-garbage-patch/

@@motorsforthemasses did you delete my response? It’s your channel, so of course you are free to control it, but it kinda smacks of hypocrisy that you’d be offended by a bit of logic and a challenge in simple English, whilst criticising those who act offended. Well, Truss didn't help and my point was, her infamous reign and mini budget may not have been that horrendous until you factor in the increase in inflation at the time and public distrust and scared to spend money era. Her 'efforts' had more of a psychological affect than practical.

Go to any bike meet these days and the majority of people there are over 60! For young people, bikes lack practicality. Commuting on a bike is difficult (no secure parking) and frankly dangerous. Just listen to the trafic news "A2 closed due to collision between a motorbike and a lorry". This happens at least once a week even though there are hardly any bikes on the A2. I see 3 or 4 a day at most). Ending bike sales by 2035 probably won't affect many people. Existing bikers will be on mobility scooters by then. Sad, but that's the way it is in England.

It's hard for younger riders to find the funds to get from learner to big bike as the UK economy continues to squeeze the money to the already rich. Chinese bikes make a difficult choice. They provide cheaper bikes, but is supporting the Chinese economy value when they support Russia's invasion of Ukraine and supply N. Korea with parts to make weapons to sell to Russia.

Bike manufacturers are in trouble because they don’t listen to customers. chase new customers younger generations who don’t want to ride dangerous motorcycles. And In doing so make bikes that look cheep from China / India. That my generation don’t want so we buy well made iconic used bikes so classic bikes are now very sort after and new bikes with ten performance modes and 8 braking another 10 handling mode make us feel nauseous so we buy real bikes instead and the fact they either go up in price or worse senecio is you don’t loose money is a plus. Name a good brand new bike and I’ll explain to you why they can’t give them away to the real bike buying public.

The lack of young people getting into bikes is cost the #1 reason. You never see a young person on an adventure bike. The old boomers are just not fit to ride anymore or just buying up adv's. The young people getting screwed again they cant even afford rent.
