Android vs. iOS is one of the most contentious battles within the tech world or at least it was. More recently, it seems that iOS has been destroying Android not just within the US but internationally. Within the US, iOS has captured the majority of users. Internationally, Android still has the majority but over the past several years, Android’s market share has fallen 8% which given the size of the smartphone market means a loss in hundreds of millions of users. This trend is especially evident amongst younger generations who by far prefer iOS. There are ways to explain this trend using logic such as Androids becoming more expensive, Androids losing their customizability, and Android losing its performance edge. But, the larger trend at play here is users’ shifting needs and desires regarding their smartphones. Given that smartphones have become an essential part of daily life, many more people value the small things that iOS offers. This video explains why people are switching from Android to iOS and what this means for the future of smartphones.

How did you not mention the demise of Huawei? Millions of people switched from Huawei to Apple

Very important factor. Huawei was close to cracking the code and becoming the undisputed king in the premium Android space. They would have had crazy marketshare alongside massive profit margins something which Samsung has tried and failed to truly achieve for so long.

Are you writing native apps? I had a short career as a professional mobile app dev, about a year and a half. I was writing apps in react native for both android and ios. I didnt really see a big difference between the two using this method. As long as I was using popular dependencies that was working for both, it was really simple to add them to the plist on ios, almost easier than messing with the manifest and gradle and whatnot on android. I was working on a mac so I had access to the surprisingly fast and responsive iphone simulation built into the mac. Simulating android phones were not as good so I relied more on physical devices for testing

As both a native iOS and Android developer (not reactive native), both platforms are equally easy to develop for. Besides there as been a lot of convergence between two. Kotlin and Swift are now very similar, Compose and Swift UI are very close, the ecosystem and general mobile dev philosophies have become so close that I can switch between them pretty seamlessly. You can almost architecture both platforms the same way for the same app. Besides, if you are actually a developer, you can install any app on you iPhone since you have a developer certificate.

As an Android user, it bothers me a lot to see how companies choose to go with 'the Apple way' instead of keep doing what had been working for them years prior. I get how they want to achieve the perceived higher status with the pricing of their flagship models or anything, but removing accessories (including charging brick) from the boxes is not the correct way. Also, as much as I enjoy the flexible and customisable nature of Android phones, I want them to put more effort into app supports. I don't even use Instagram that much, but I'd be lying if I say I don't envy how Instagram and many more apps look and feel better in iPhones.

My biggest gripe that I have been having with Android phones lately is that they have been basically copying Apple in all of the wrong ways. I've noticed this as early as the Galaxy S6. In that phone they took out the removable battery and the SD card slot. I remember being very upset about that, and that was all the way back in 2015. The next model, the S7, brought back the SD card slot, but it still didn't have the removable battery. Eventually they removed the SD card slot again in the S21 and haven't brought it back since. That to me is one of the biggest features of Android, and I don't think any of the major flagships this year have it. My current phone is an S20, which is the last Samsung Galaxy to have an SD card slot. It's been 3 years since I got it and I'm hesitant to upgrade to anything because of this. And then of course there's stuff like removing the headphone jack, not including a charger in the box, etc. that Apple started and for some reason Android developers followed. Seems to me like it would be such an easy thing to just not do that stuff and they could easily regain market share.

Same here. IDK, with storage being so high, I don't really need the SD card, but it still is nice to have. I also don't use the jack anymore, and my new car doesn't even have a input for it either. It's not that Samsung doesn't offer a decent phone with an SD card slot, it's just that you lose wireless charging, esim and Dex if you get it vs the S23.

The difference between flagship phones nowadays is so minute on the specification list. It really does just come down to usability. iPhone is dramatically easier to use than any other phone I’ve tried. Everything takes less clicks, is more automated, more simple, easier to understand, etc. also because so many people have iPhones, not being able to use iMessage or FaceTime or Airdrop with your friend or family becomes a huge inconvenience to the user. Instead of blaming the iPhone user for not having a Android or specific messaging apps, it is usually shifted the blame on Android, where it feels like they’re asking you to go out of your way to use email, messenger, Skype, Discord, or other platforms to do what an iPhone can do with another iPhone out the gate.

Maybe if apple didn't lock users out of using other sms apps or didn't lock users into a walled garden, this wouldn't be an issue. Thankfully imessage is only a USA thing - the rest of the world isn't dumb enough to let apple rule their entire lives. "iPhone is dramatically easier to use than any other phone I’ve tried." ONLY if you live by their rules. As soon as you want to not do anything they like, it's a complete bitch. And they claim it's all in the name of "security." Nonsense.

@@sprockkets Most people have Apple phones in my country, and I’m not in the US. Apple is the most dominating phone brand. Also yes, i did already say that it’s Apple fault for how messaging works. What I’m essentially saying is that because i have more people close to me with an iPhone, for ease of use I need to also have an iPhone. Yes, if you want customisation, side loading, custom ROMs, etc. It’s a bitch. However the latter 2 most people don’t need or use, and customisation has been getting better in iPhones case. Other than that, I can’t really think of much that is an issue.

Agree on the points why Android is losing out. The pricing is one part, of course. Performance really is not that distinguishable anymore, aside from the most serious users. My biggest complaint is with customization: they played Apple's game by following them in taking out expandable storage, removable batteries, charging bricks, etc. Instead of being the one putting pressure on Apple, they followed Apple and tried to be like them. Samsung even had the gall to throw shade at Apple about not removing the charger on their boxes, but they quickly followed suit. The things that made Android the anti-Apple has been slowly stripped off. If they have basically the same stuff as Apple, then people would then considering going the other way instead of Android having them on their hands.

Sometimes removing feature is just the right thing to do, not just following Apple. Want good waterproofing? You need to ditch the removable back plate. You want cheaper shipping and marketing “for the environment”? Remove the charging brick (and nowadays everyone has one so there’s just no need to include one). It’s just that Apple is brave enough (and wealthy enough) to take on that big initial risk.

@@TheVinceVoice The problem with android is that OS updates are applied by the phone's manufacturer instead of the OS developer. The update files get messed and modified by the phone manufacturer. Many android phones don't allow to install stock android. Imagine buying for example a lenovo Laptop with Windows. Instead of getting OS updates from Microsoft they come from Lenovo. Instead of a windows start menu you would get "Lenovo Super Menu with backdoor premium". A clean install of windows is not possible, jecause of soldered memory and locked down EFI. Would you trust this device? I certainly would not. With an Iphone, the phone manufacture and OS developer is the same. The update files don't get messed with or delayed. If every android phone would get it's updates from Google directly and with 6+ years of support, i would consider it again. I only use a smartphone for my business, for my private life i don't, because i want to digital detox a bit in my free time. I don't need high performance or a good camera. Apple focuses on selling products to people who are already Apple customers. They're about keeping you in their walled garden. Every time they get around to implementing something that's already been on Android for years they act as if they just invented it. If you watch their announcements and marketing, they never actually acknowledge that other phones or competitors exist. That would break the spell for the people already inside, by letting them know there was something outside the wall. I say this as a long-term iPhone user, but it's the same with all of their products.

@@Pushing_Pixels that’s all very true and the way they do all of that stuff always has more of a subconscious effect on users as they’re very subtle about it. For example even something like how they now allowed facetime on non apple devices also serves to strengthen the walled garden. They made the process of joining a facetime call from an android so ridiculous by making it seem like the android user is a stranger (using the “Maybe” tag) and even when they try to join the link you send them, the iPhone user still has to “allow” the android user to join. They basically found a way to recreate the green vs blue bubble effect with FaceTime. Another recent thing worth noting nowadays is the “sign in with Apple” feature. They’ve made it so easy to sign in and manage so many logins on 3rd party sites and apps from an Apple device, but then they made it so that “sign in with Apple” is a total pain in the neck to do from non Apple devices. I think one of the biggest factors in apple's favor is consistency. When you buy an iPhone you know exactly what to expect. A more or less stable experience that's simple and familiar. With android, companies are constantly changing and you never know what you're going to get next time. But above all in this category, it's old hardware. I've been consistently using an iPhone 8 as my former primary phone and now my secondary phone for years, but it hasn't stopped getting feature updates until just this year. If I got any old android phone, I'd probably have gotten rid of it years ago.

I mean thats kinda a very invalid point. among flagship phones you find consistency and the budget phones. you have a whole lot of experimental phones in the mix. and phones from companies no one has ever heard. but lets say you stick to galaxy. theres the S series which is great and you have a budget A series which feels almost like a flagship. you can cherry pick bad android phones but that's only cause there's more "options" why would you choose them

I'll be sticking with Android regardless, but this is all very true. I switched from iPhone to Android in 2019 for customizability and expandable storage, and while it was worth it for the expandable storage alone, Androids now largely aren't much more customizable than iPhones now. From what I've gathered, it's become much easier to install apps not from the app store, and visually the theme options between Android and iOS seem basically on par. Also, some models completely lock down the bootloader, making it impossible to install any kind of custom ROM or app that requires root, making it on par with iPhones in that regard. My current phone is an S20 FE 5G, got it July 2021. Good prices on Androids can be found easily if you browse eBay for relatively recent phones. My phone cost me $300 used as a ~9 month old model, which MSRP'd at $700 iirc. I don't mind the non replaceable battery as much because with AccuBattery it's easy to keep the charge cycles in check and prolong the factory battery's life. I don't mind the lack of headphone jack as much as I thought I would either; Bluetooth headphones can't get tangled up and if I want to use wired, I have the adapter. As long as there continues to be Androids with respectable specs and expandable storage, I'll be sticking with Android. It sucks that all the Androids with removable batteries are nearly unusable except for the most basic of uses (see: Blu View 3, Nokia C100)

Android will continue to have more market share because there are countries that most people can't afford an iPhone. Here in Brazil, for example, the cheapest iPhone cost the same as the last year Samsung high end device (S22 Ultra). That means in some tiers, Android doesn't have competition. I used to put a 10,000 mah battery to replace the stock battery on the samsung galaxy note 4 when I used to have the samsung galaxy note 4. The removable batteries are tool less and cost less than going to a 3rd party repair shop to replace the battery. The samsung galaxy s5 and the galaxy active phones have removable batteries that are water resistant. Headphone jacks are what is needed to use the fm radio. Whenever I use the fm radio, the fm radio says to plug in wired headphones from the headphone jack to use the headphone jack as an antenna. The headphone can be used to plug in a wired external cable microphones. Using the usb c port for smartphone accessories will wear out the port faster than using the standard headphone jack. Using a battery case makes the usb c port with usb c dongles no longer usable. I tried using a headphone jack adapter being plugged into a battery case and the audio still comes out of of the phone speakers. Having a headphone jack does not require any work arounds and you can't use the same bluetooth headphones for long term use due to the disposal batteries that are not user replaceable. Wired just work and are just plug and play. Wired headphones are 100% reliable. There are wired headphones that have user removable removable cables and user upgradeable cables that use the headphone jack. The wired headphones can be converted to bluetooth with a bluetooth adapter. Wired headphones have unlimited use without battery degradation and have superior sound quality than bluetooth headphones that sounds mediocre and are more affordable than bluetooth headphones that have to be constantly be replaced. The wired headphones also has better microphone quality when talking on the phone and there is 0 latency with wired headphones.

i prefer the simplicity, effectiveness, security and interface of the iPhone and i’m saying this as a person who has come from 4 generations of androids (growing up with them). my first was the blackberry, then a sony Xperia and Samsung S4 and then Samsung J4+. after the J4+, which was a couple of years ago, i realised the gap between apple and android was rapidly shrinking and iPhones were becoming more popular and i dismissed this mostly, however the risk of Huawei that was presented in 2019 and the discontinuation along with the rising price of new samsungs further cemented Android’s inevitable decline to me and the iPhone x would have come out around that time, which saw massive expansion in their brand and status (even tho people shat on the whole notch design). at this point of time, technology has come a long way and me (a 17 year old), the new trend is efficiency not bragging about specs that don’t translate into consumer experience. seeing as how my experience with iphones are much smoother (i tried out my dad and brother’s new samsungs and found the switch staggering for me) it just seems like android users are clinging onto the old tales of the past of which iPhones are just more expensive and just for the brand, where as that’s LITERALLY what androids are marketing themselves to be now - the premium brand. androids became popular from accessibility and performance, and now that almost everyone owns phones and phones have become a much more significant part of our society, i think it’s safe to say iPhone can only go up from here. also, the optimisation and updates for android are more jarring because they can’t really tailor app performance to all different brands of smartphones that go under the android banner meaning their scope is which wider and can’t focus on one device only and i’ve found this to be the case with iPhone’s apps being more optimised for an iPhone. it’s like a car, you can have the power train but if you don’t have the perfect aerodynamics that work for that car, it’s not gonna live up to its full potential. i can go on for longer, but i think these key take aways are enough

I think the decline of Android can be chalked up several ways. Here are two that pop out to me. Android used to be very consumer friendly, with features like IR blasters, expandable memory, removeable batteries, and other features. Now, it's almost impossible to find a consumer-friendly phone with flagship specs. The advantage of android dies when its feature-set doesn't empower its users. I don't even trust new system updates to provide me with new features. Just more ways to lock the phone down with each generation. So I no longer update my OS. Also, I feel like a lot of people got a negative first impression of android when they were young because so many phone manufacturers forced all sorts of bloat onto the phone with unnecessary apps, poor design, and so forth. The experience didn't feel smooth or clean, unlike stock android, or iOS. It made the operating system feel gimmicky and cheap.

I would agree specifically with the features. Android use to differentiate because of that. Universal controllers are apps I still use today with my 2015 phone that I keep in order to turn my tv on and my ac on. Removable batteries and expandable memory was cool too. I always expected my Android phone to be a Swiss knife kinda tool but Google decided for Android to be an iPhone rival in everything. Unless Apple severely changes how they build, repair and service the Iphone I will NEVER own one. I have had too many people around me have issues with these phones and not be able to have them fixed. The option is always to buy a new one. Then the scummy practice of intentionally debilitating older phones so people feel obligated to upgrade to a newer one is despicable. Add to that the inability to repair the phone yourself, the forced syncing when you don't want it, and 'features' that limit customizability of use. No thank you. Android isn't perfect. However, Apple managed to put the decision into a stalemate for now until 2024. Something that i often see nobody mentions, maybe they don't care but i do, is lack of service support on iOS which makes the 3rd party apps almost dead when closed, despite any other operating systems (including Mac OS). That was the main reason i switched back to Android after using iphone for a year. I can add to that, independent app storage instead of shared storage again unlike any other OS (including Mac) which makes it hard to manage your storage (the files are often duplicated if used by multiple apps and will need manual cleanup.) As my personal experience, i found most of the iPhone users depend a lot more than me on their desktop OS' while i usually do a lot of their desktop needs using my phone, like applying for jobs, filling up documents, signing contracts, using third party cloud storages, sharing media/files between different apps (very annoying on iphone when it comes to large files), etc. I suppose iphone would be a good choice for those who has limited usage of their phone and are more dependent on their laptops for serious stuff. I do most of their serious stuff on the Android phone. And I'm a happy ipad user only because i don't use it for serious needs. And i believe iOS has a terrible UX and i have facts on it which makes it not suitable for serious stuff. Above that i often switch phones every other year and Apple's longer support is not a big deal for me.

The Huawei to Apple might have something to do with the "plummeting" numbers. I will argue that customization is still pretty high with Android phones, and for the time being, it is relegated to spectrum. Flagship phones have indeed removed headphone jacks and SD storage, while introducing higher specs and different form factors. The low to mid range phones do however maintain the features lost by the flagships. At the end of the day I think it's just a matter of convenience vs variety

I love my s21 ultra. Though compared to an iPhone, it does feel like we're paying for an inferior product. For example, Genshin Impact at medium settings can barely run at 30fps, with the resolution clearly being lower than native. Whereas on the equivalent iPhone at the time, it was capable of running at native res, 120hz max settings. While I understand optimization per platform plays a big role, it doesn't change the fact that it's still an inferior experience. Imagine how it feels paying $1k for an inferior experience at anything. I used to be all about the talking points with the smoother 120hz display on my androids years before apple finally adopted it, and now I realize consistent 60fps in every application is FAR better than 120fps in the menu, then dying at 15fps in anything that remotely requires graphical computation. With that being said, I don't feel like I would "own" an iPhone. It doesn't give the same freedom of being able to do whatever you want with it like most devices running android and that's unfortunately the reason I won't be switching. Though that apple xr headset is looking real good. Some competition from android is starting to show up for it- but guess what? It will have zero optimization, Genshin will run at 30fps on it in 480p, and it will melt your brain off with whatever the new qualcomm crapdragon is. And because I care about my privacy and the feeling of owning the things I buy, I'll have to go with it over the Apple Vision. It's also clearly just going to be another repeat of the Android and Apple race. The apple Vision product line will have the superior computational power, visuals (4k per eye), higher refresh rate, better battery life, every major existing application being able to run natively on it, etc. Natively like Genshin Impact, photo and video editing software, Camera looking good in third party apps. The android competitor hasn't even released yet but here's the repeat rundown of how it's gonna end up: There will be 2 apps that run above 60fps, that being the menu and your gallery. It will have a 20 minute battery life. Watching a youtube video in 240p will increase the temperature of the cpu to the surface of the sun. It will have 720p per eye, 15 degrees field of view, and the pixels will be the size of your break pedal. This is coming from someone that has always dissed Apple. I'm just frustrated. It's like no company that makes Android devices has ANY desire to improve the industry. Everyone is out doing their own thing. Google deliberately destroying the android open source project. Samsung pretending like they are an Apple competitor in the US market, trying their best to make the worst possible cooling system for their devices. I don't even blame them for giving up. Look at qualcomm, putting in zero effort to optimize the chips for their biggest clients. What type of developers would bother with making a good running app for a Phone running on an OS that hates the hardware, being powered by a chip that's unoptimized for the hardware or OS, running in a form factor that would turn it into a stove? To this point I don't even blame the developers of Snapchat for keeping the camera crap and Genshin Impact for not bothering with performance optimizations. If the makers of the devices don't care then no developer should either. This rant went on for a little longer than I suspected

This might be a random thought, but it also potentially may be that kids who grew up when smartphones were becoming popular usually ended up with an Android because their parents didn't want to buy them an expensive iPhone. Maybe now that those kids might have some money, they are buying the phone they wanted originally when they were younger, even if it might not be the most financially responsible decision.

Yeah the smartphone game really has changed a lot since I got my first smartphone (the galaxy s4). Back then the standard price for a flagship was $649, removable batteries and expandable storage were king (on android at least), and each phone was significantly better than the last. You could easily upgrade every year or even half year between brands and see noticeable improvements. Now, you could honestly go a couple years between phones and barely tell them apart. And I also agree that apple has gotten significantly better with the iPhone. It used to be in my mind that android was way better than iPhone, but I don't really feel that way anymore. The new iPhone is just as, if not more capable, than my Samsung phone. Now I don't really like apple as a company and I can't really ever see myself switching from android, but I certainly can understand why a lot of people do.

I believe this is what Android should look like on a phone. So if you are considering switching from Samsung to Pixel... Do it. The Pixel 7 (from last year) is at a very fair price nowadays so you could buy that one.

This has been happening for years here in Sweden 🇸🇪. Here around 90% of business users and a clear majority of gen z are iPhone users. I would say that we even have a higher percentage of iPhone users than the US by now. And it’s not slowing down. I work in it and communications and have been for the last 24 years. Ever since the iPhone 3G launched in 2008 it’s been dominating the market here. Sweden is a highly technological country being the birth place of Minecraft, Skype, Spotify and Exchange Active Sync, the leading mobile email protocol for businesses for decades, Ericsson 5G networks are also from Sweden. The trend was clear out of the gate and even less well off people splurged for an iPhone. Here android users are seen as tech geeeks. Written in my 9th version of iPhone. Yes. I skipped the 3gs, the 7 and the X and 11. Going to skip the 15 too since the one I got still is great. If this is any indicator as to the future of android in the rest of the world, time will tell. Unfortunately those features don't make money for those companies. The plan for all your favourite Android OEMs was always to start out seeming "consumer friendly" with cheaper phones, more features, etc to lure users in but any company that wishes to survive knows that model can't last forever. Eventually they'll all want those iPhone profit margins and that's what's happening right now. Android phones are becoming more like iPhones than the iPhone itself. Nothing represents this better than the trajectory of OnePlus

Yeah also another reason why I think apple is overtaking Android more in USA than rest of the world is because USA doesn't have Xiaomi and other Chinese brands, since those brands are afraid to enter US market because they don't want the same thing that happened to Huawei to happen to them. but since Xiaomi and other Chinese brands are active in the rest of the world, these brands still offer much of the original reasons why Android became popular, such as Xiomi's Poco line of Phones having Affordability, Customizability, Headphone Jack a charger brick that is actually 35W+ and etc..

One word- convenience. As someone who works in marketing the number one aspect to take into account is how much effort people have to put into something to get what they need. @@noturbussiness3 Most people won't care about a device doing something better if it's easier/more convenient to do said thing and that's for any ecosystem, not just electronics. In one case the ease of being able to leave your iPhone in your bedroom, but being able to place and answer calls as if your iPhone was next to you on your MacBook Pro/iMac makes for an INCREDIBLY useful feature to business users. I don't remember though if Apple still has SMS bridging functionality between macOS and iOS in iMessage. As a business owner I NEED the seamless integration so I can easily change what device I'm using depending on what my project at work is. I've been on both teams, When I was younger you could call me an Apple fanboy, I had a shrine and everything. My first Android was the Note 3, I've switched back and forth but currently, I'm on a Samsung, however a lot of the time I prefer to stay with Android there are two major things that are preventing me from switching back. Which is the clear all notifications and the separate wipe-up screen for all apps. I much prefer this way so it's nice and clean on the home screen. Until Apple brings these two features to iPhone idk when I'll switch back. Also, I'm a dev and it's a lot easier to get applications that can utilize the functionality of the phone ex heat mapping for wireless or checking the channels. For iPhone you need an external device.
@ashtonlagreenia6114
@ashtonlagreenia6114 8 ай бұрын
Well, for the clear all notifications, you have to press and hold (force touch) the X button on the top right of the notification stack and a "clear all notifications" option will appear. In fact with iOS 16, there's more options by force touching the icons like the flashlight brightness, widget option, etc but they are kinda hidden as many people are unaware that you can press and hold for this option. As for the wipe up all apps, yeah that sucks but I just swipe half up and clear the app when closing instead of the normal close each time.. so it's everytime force close the app. Definitely would be better for a clear ram option tho. Side note, one thing I found better on ios (as I use my phone as a main device even for work emails and docs) is that the files app is amazing. Zip and unzip files, create a zip file from a bunch of files, drag and drop pdf etc to whatsapp and outlook, native file like system with online storage iCloud and OneDrive as a folder location instead of a separate app to drag snd drop between locations...just like on pc...and the seamless icloud photo backup Google files is literally not on par and I prefer Samsung's my files app which still is behind apple files app
@LordGooben

My first two smartphones were Android. I was perfectly happy with them, but wanted to try an iPhone to "see what the fuss was about". I've been using them since, but I've also gradually been sucked more and more into the ecosystem. I've ended up buying the watch, because it syncs to the phone, and the air pods because they sync automatically. Now I want to get a tablet and it "makes sense" to get an iPad (which are really expensive for the good ones) because it will work with the other stuff, even though an Android tablet could probably do 90% of what I want it for. I play games on PC, so I will never need a Mac (thank the maker), but the more I get sucked into Apple's walled garden, the more expensive everything ends up being. I like small phones, my current one is an iPhone 12 Mini, but now that Apple has stopped making small phones I can see a future where my next phone is Android. But then I lose the compatibility with all the other Apple crap I've bought. Apple's a trap.

I just prefer Android's UI. Much cleaner and more unified imo. Every app tends to close different and you lack tons of control with the iPhone. Home screen button and back button are also super nice on android and missing on iPhone. Makes getting places more of a hassle on an iPhone. Lastly, I notice apple tends to just copy android on the software end these days. They just get it waaay later. Android is still by far the global leader despite what the vid would try to lead on to. It's really not that close and until it's a lot closer it doesn't seem to alarming really. Especially with the price gaps in many countries.

They've built it in a way that doesn't need to change from year to year because it just works. Same for the overall design of iPhones. Many complain they look the same, but why would they need to change it? It's the simplest design that also just works well.. it's minimalistic and easily recognizable.
