Accidents happen. From cuts and scrapes to fever and lameness, a hoof abscess or a puncture wound, being prepared can make all the difference.
With the right supplies, you can treat small problems on your own, and you can be ready to handle emergencies until the vet arrives.
A good first aid kit is essential for every horse owner and in this video, I’ll show you what is in my own barn first aid kit.

I've got a stethoscope as well, partly to listen to breathing, but also handy for listening to gut sounds in case of colic.

Great kit. Maybe you could add an eye wash and an eye ointment.

My horse is pasture boarded, so I keep a headlamp in my kit in case I have to treat him in the dark. I keep the batteries out of the headlamp in a plastic bag so they don't corrode. I have alcohol, peroxide and chlorhexidine. Some saline solution for eyes is in there, too. I bought some animalintex, which are medicated pads you can soak in water and wrap around an injured hoof...just easier. I also have a hoof boot. I have some ice packs, but they have cool wraps you can buy. I've never tried them, but they look great. May have to get those! Thanks for this video...I think more people need to get a first aid kit together.

Thank you Lee for the additional items. I will put them on the list - specially the headlamp!

@@ingridblohm-hyde805 I forgot...stethescope (just a cheap one) is a good idea, too. I have one...you can listen for heart rate and also gut sounds. One thing I don't have (but should!) is a book on equine first aid.

Because I have worked as a vet tech for a very long time, I like to have good quality Tupperware containers partly filled with iodine solution correctly diluted and then I fill it with 2x2 gauze squares so they are ready to go. I also like to do the same with a chlorhexidine solution. Both are great and already in an air tight container ready to use is extremely helpful for other and the vet in a hurry. Also like to have some sterile saline solution on hand for flushing wounds because it is closer to the body’s make up and it doesn’t burn as much as when you use just tap water.

And flashlights, batteries and some towels of different sizes just in case you need to dry an area or cover the horse’s eyes some reason. I have seen someone who needed to cover a horse’s eyes to calm them down in a few situations.

Can you tell me the proper dilution of Betadine/iodine? I saw something specific on the betadine website once, but now I can’t find it. All anyone ever says is weak tea and I’d really like something more specific! Can the diluted betadine be stored in a squirt bottle with a cap?

Thank you so much for this video! I'm researching what to have in a first aid kit to be able to share with our 4-H Horse and Pony Club, and this is a great resource! I'll be checking out your other videos too!

The nice things about saliva as a lubricant for taking rectal temperatures are that it's closer to the horse's body temperature, is always available, and never runs out.

Great video thank you, I've been wondering what to put in a first aid kit for when I get my first horse. Would love to see a video on recognising signs of colic or lameness. Thank you!

Thanks so much for this video Callie! I am looking to purchase my own horse in the coming year and I would like to know about all this information. Do you happen to know of a good book that provides information on how to detect/treat basic ailments?

Is vet-wrap safe? I know it has elastic and can cut off circulation in legs, Is there a safe way to do it? If so, please make a video on it or tell me. I just got into horses 5 months ago but I already knew stuff from my grandpa. Thanks!

If using saliva for use with thermometer, is that applied to the thermometer or directly to the horse? Asking for a friend LOL. All kidding aside, great info - thanks
