Ever thought about what’s in bear spray? It’s pretty cool stuff! You gotta use it up close, but it’s super good at making bears back off. As soon as it hits a bear’s eyes, they start to sting and water a lot. If the bear breathes it in, it can make their throat feel all scratchy and hard to breathe. The thing that makes it work is a spicy stuff called capsaicin, which comes from hot chili peppers. Neat, huh?

Although this might seem brutal it's a much safer option for the bears than guns because it non lethal (doesn't kill them). After a given period the effects will wear off and the bear will be back to normal. Also some studies suggest that it 90% effective in deterring bears when used as opposed to fire arms which are 80% effective. edit: earlier I said firearms are effective 80% of the time but I used Bing ai to look for more. - **Bear Spray Study**: In 2008, some researchers named Smith and his team looked at 83 times when people used bear spray to stop bears. They found that the spray worked really well - it stopped the bears 90% of the time. - **Firearms Study**: Smith and his team did another study in 2012. They looked at 269 times when people had to deal with bears in Alaska from 1883 to 2009. They were checking how well guns worked to stop bears. I remember the story with a park ranger using bear spray. He sprayed the grizzly bear with bear spray and it got even more aggressive and attacked him not once but twice the second time was a lot worse than the first attack. He said in a interview he wished he was armed with a firearm. 😐😐😐😐

That was a “tame” bear that it’s “owners” were working with and the guy attacked wanted to be part of the routine and was standing there as they were talking about the routine and then the bear attacked the guy because he was not familiar to the bear. The attack was only a few seconds before the bear was driven off.

Yeah, after seeing your comment I looked it up and I just read a story about this from The Guardian. it's really crazy. I learned the bear was eventually killed though. A 25-year-old bear and almost at the tail end of its life. I learned the spray cans last about 7-9 seconds so it's probably easy to use it up fast.

you're right its safer to avoid them entirely. but if you're in any close encounter with a bear, the bear spray will cause them an immense amount of suffering if used. And in most cases that will be enough to drive them away.

And even though he had only one bullet left he made the decision to shoot it at it's side in order not to kill it but that wasn't enough to stop it from charging at him.

It's probably banned in parks because bear sprays use a "burst" system & the wind will carry it, causing it to harm people & other animals. That's why police officers carry stream OC sprays on their duty belts to prevent OC spray from flowing back on them or other people.

I see you point but like I mentioned in the pinned comment. There is a study that suggests pepper spray has been more effective at warding off bears than guns have. So, I think for the average untrained person their best chance is with the spray. That's if the study is accurate.

My summary of the guide’s advice didn’t really do it justice, for he emphasized that if you had to face a bear with a handgun, .44 mag, 45 Casull didn’t matter, you would be instantly wishing you had a rifle instead or better yet an Abram’s Tank. A handgun is still a handgun and that means it is NOT a rifle, and you are severely handicapped with it against a bear. And this is to counter the very common opinion among American sportsmen that a large caliber revolver in .44 magnum or better is sufficient to adequately defend yourself against close encounters of the bear kind.

Fun fact bear spray is weaker then regular pepper spray being as a bears eyes and sinuses are more sensative so less capsaicin but more volume is what is looked for. Large clouds that are hardnto avoid but watered downish so as to not be as bad for you if your in a heavy wind

Sure, leave your guns at home, a little spray is all you need. Maybe a Coroner’s van too. Most times in favorable conditions the spray is very effective. It’s those awkward moments it’s not. Always have a backup and that’s whatever firearm you’re most comfortable using instinctively. Use hard lead bullets NOT self defense rounds. 10 mm is sufficient, but 9mm has worked when vitals are hit through and through.

like i mentioned in the pinned comment, there is a study that looked at cases over a period of time where humans with bear spray encountered bears and over 90% of the time they successfully drove the bear away. As opposed to firearms which were 80% effective or sometimes even less than 80%.

I just looked it up after I saw your comment because I had doubts about it, and it turns out you're right. It's actually a part of cinnamon although a very small amount. I learned the primary compounds that make cinnamon spicy are cinnamaldehyde and eugenol. These compounds contribute more to cinnamon's spicy taste which is actually a different form of spiciness from chili pepper. Also, the Scoville scale measures the level of heat in foods primarily based on their capsaicin content and I learned cinnamon doesn't rank on there.

@@valeriab9735 i looked up your comment again and you know what? I found that you are kinda right. I learned that cinnamon truly does affect ants by interfering with their pheromone receptors and that disrupts their ability to communicate and coordinate activities with each other. I also found out it's not the capsaicin in there that affects them but rather the compound cinnamaldehyde. It makes it difficult for the ants to navigate and find food sources. 😂 but you know bear spray is actually more powerful , sprays a longer range and has longer lasting effects than the usual pepper spray. I learned the usual pepper spray has Oleoresin capsicum which is actually a synthetic form capsaicin (the actual chemical that burns in hot chilly peppers). so, considering all these, there is some significant difference between them.

I’ve seen bears get hit with that and not even care. I’ve also seen them roll in it, just loving it. I’m thinking it’s the sudden gust that surprises them
