So, of course no one wants to bug out. It sounds fun, and you may get this picturesque idea of being like Rick from The Walking Dead, but that's not reality...yet. Bugging in is obviously ideal, but we don't get to chose what is ideal in a SHTF situation.
It can't hurt to have a backpack put together (for each person in your household) with a few things that could get you through 3 days to a week.
I know there are several things I need to add (a tent, sleeping bags, inflatable bed pads, a folding saw, etc.) but those particular things I want to do a lot of research on and make sure I'm getting the best quality I can.
Feel free to share and comment anything you think would be important to add to my Bug Out Bag. I really appreciate all of you and how helpful you have been to me and any new preppers who read the comments.
Prep for yourself and your family FIRST, but if you feel inclined to support this channel, you can buy me a coffee (or 5 hr energy) here: ko-fi.com/suns...

While backpacking 40 years ago, I fell into a creek. I will never forget the change in weight from a dry sleeping bag to a wet one. For many years afterward, the entire contents of my bag were inside a heavy duty garbage bag, tied. I also like a lot of zip-lock baggies for the smaller pockets.

Wow, I've never thought of that before. We did "drownproofing" where I live because it's a coastal area with lots of rivers and lakes. We had to jump in the water with a button down shirt and jeans on top of our swimsuits so that we'd be prepared for how heavy clothes get when they get soaked, but I never thought about how that would also apply to gear. Thanks! (Part of the exercise was learning how to blow air into your button down as an improvised flotation device. To this day, I only wear button downs when I get on a boat lol. Also, tuck in your armpits and squeeze your legs together to prevent heat loss until rescue comes. It works even better if you can form a circle and combine body heat/buoancy)

Nicely done and well thought out. When I started prepping in 2015, I started with BOBs then focused on bugging in. Now revisiting my bags. You elaborate well on your reasons for your items. Some things you may want to consider: Collapsible, light duffle bag for gathering; small pencil sharpener for twigs for shavings of tinder / kindling; tweezers for splinters; fingernail clips for hangnails; moleskin to prevent or cover blisters; entire toilet paper roll with cardboard center removed and then smashed flat; stainless steel cook cup (they make one to fit around your Nalgene bottle); goggles to protect eyes from limbs, especially at night; boonie hat for sun protection, same with sunglasses; spork for you and son; light source with red light or filter for night travel; Camelback bladder and tube to attach to your Sawyer mini instead of their crappy plastic "squeeze bottle"; maxi pads for lacerations. FOR MY 12 YEAR OLD SON: His bag has a few basics like a stainless steel container, first aid kit, toiletries, flashlights, rain suit; knife, etc. But his bag is mainly geared towards keeping him occupied and calm. If he's stressed, that will make me stressed. So I put some of his favorite things to do or play with: a Bible, a ball, plastic planets, crayons, colored pencils and paper (maybe think of a waterproof notebook and a space pen); change of clothes in a dry compression sack; playdough, mini magna doodle; legos, etc. I work in law enforcement and desired to prep after seeing the children's faces of Hurricane Katrina evacuees / refugees. I was doing security at our exposition center where there were hundreds upon hundreds of cots occupied by these poor displaced people. Most depressing thing I can remember seeing. So much so that it began my quest to not be reliant upon the government. All these people, yet you could hear a coin drop, save for the occasional cough. Keep your son happy and it will help you cope a lot more easily during a critical incident. Our kids will more than likely be fine but we worry about them as parents. Our child's smile or laugh can keep us going.

That's kind of mental disorder or mentally double minded. Your packs better be ready when the time comes otherwise it's pointless. A pack can only get so mechanically useful. Till its redundant. It needs to support most important needs and ability to make you're own shelter if needed in bush and urban environment cold or hot.

The one thing I have in mine that many don't is a decoy bag that's like a cheap book bag that's cloth and folds up. Hide actual bug out bag and throw a few things in cheap bag and leave it exposed somewhat. If you get robbed, you lose little. Throw a ramen noodle, lighter or dollar store matches, dollar store socks, bottle of water, emergency cheap blanket, etc. You get the picture. Bag inside a bag, but firearm, real supplies, food, water in real bag hid.

Ok....seriously...As a parent myself I applaud the effort ur putting into your preps...that being said the intended purpose of a BOB and preps is to leave the area of imminent danger for a specified period of time with enough supplies for that specified period of time...Anything beyond that time should be considered a "refugee" bag because that's what most people become if they don't have a place with additional supplies to relocate to...I suggest you focus on the most likely hazards in your specific geographical area, take into account your current skills and plan accordingly...lastly toss in a pair of FRS radios, a pair of Hammocks with mosquito netting, switch out the jet boil stove for an Alcohol stove, a tarp, and develop a plan with your kid and practice executing that plan...Good luck.

Impressive that you've gone so far in a year with prepping. I've been at it in some form or fashion for 14 years. Everyone has a way to organize but I go with the first items needed being the first accessible. My toiletries, fire starting and hardware items, and food have their own bags. There's a pocket survival kit in my ALICE bag's side pocket. It goes in a fanny pack if I leave camp for any period of time. It has the most essential items I'd need if I got lost on a short hike. For meals the Mountain House meals make the most sense when it comes to food. An idea on the first aid pack; add a Stop the Bleed kit with an Israeli dressing, CAT tourniquet (some are counterfeit; be careful), and wound packing. I have duplicate nitrile gloves and an Ambu pocket rescue breathing shield in my kits. Generally you seem to be on track. It's hard to stock a year's worth of food and essentials. What I advise is stock for two weeks at home then move up to 30 days then three and six months. It's best to incorporate it with your pantry and rotate it. If you can't procure or grow food beyond six months you're in trouble. Having a garden is a great idea. You'll need a fence if you're in deer country. It's a daily task to deal with the garden because of bugs and weeds. At least you have a helper. I wish you luck and hope you get to move to a larger, quieter place for your farm.

@sunshinestatesurvival
@sunshinestatesurvival 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agreed. Firemaking is my main concern. My son and I practice firemaking from time to time in the backyard and it is definitely not easy. I'd like to get some fat wood and keep a small amount in the bugout bag, and I need to practice with charcloth. It's very humid and wet in Florida so finding good dry wood is not easy, as it rains often. Building and nursing a good fire is like raising a baby... it's painstaking, can be stressful, but worth every second! Thanks for watching!

There are times when you can't stay in your home. Some ordinary emergencies, like for example your neighbor's house has a fire. They have seconds to exit. You might get five minutes before the flames come towards your house. What if due to water, smoke, or fire damage your family can't re-enter your house for a day or two. Moving your family and your bug-out bags to your vehicle during those five minutes will make matter much better. You face tomorrow afresh.

It's GREAT to see a woman being prepared but I have 2 little tips.... First, ditch that heavy big shovel. Second, and most important, try to think more long term. If something happens, I can almost guarantee it is NOT going to be over in a week. For example, instead of a stove that requires you to carry fuel and then when you run out it's becomes trash, try something like the solo stove. It's lightweight, small and uses anything you can find outside as fuel. Also a solar Lucy light is awesome and cheep. Hope this helps, stay safe and many blessings to you and yours. ;)

Great video and keep on prepping, just remember nobody starts at the finish line so don’t get discouraged. One time I had a bug spray bottle discharge in my bag so of course I going to advise on double zip-lock bagging them while not in use. One of the chemicals in bug spray is deet and can damage some of the camping gear materials also.

Thank you for that advice. I definitely don't want bug spray all over my bag. I'm actually going to be getting rid of that particular bug spray because apparently if your dog licks your skin with DEET bug spray on it is pretty hazardous to them. Add similar tools to BOTH bags like a fixed blade knife, folding saw, hatchet/camp axe and a solid multi-tool to your IDEAL Bug out bag (North Face). Both bags are solid otherwise. LifeStraws are only good for 1000Gal which in a SHTF/Grid Down scenario, you will go through in a few days. PLUS the life straws don't adapt well to gravity systems OR in-line systems with backpack water bladders, in my experience. Keep it up!

I've watched about half of your videos and have the following suggestions based on what I've seen of your overall preps: Perhaps find someone to give advise on tactical prudence. I don't mean personal protection devises per se, but making your residence be a "grey man", or somehow make it look invisible or unappealing to intruders. Consider a video monitoring system so you can see where intruders are heading such as a window, backyard or front door. See who and how many are lurking around and be there to "greet" them. Setups are at Amazon around $500 or so. If the generator you bought is going to be used in the garage, maybe sound insulate so the generator is not heard from the outside. If everyone is out of power, don't let light get outside which will draw attention. Prepare window coverings ahead of time and test adequacy. Maybe mount brackets on front and back door so you can drop a 2 x 4 across and make it hard for them to kick it in. You have the advantage because tactically, its always been easier to hold a position, than to take one. You can prepare and intruders don't know what they will find inside. For what its worth God Bless

Well done, definitely more prepared than most. Me personally, I’d ditch the bug spray and go with long sleeves, pants, cap, gloves, and bug head net cover. Some of those other disposable items will get you where you need to go depending on scenario, but a backpacking bidet instead of toilet wipes or paper maybe, and reusable pads and soap instead of disposable hygiene products are some of what I packed for my wife and family. I moved all electronics and lighting to usb rechargeable instead of replacing and packing batteries. I see this video is a couple years old already and I know philosophy on gear changes. But steel cup and canteen to boil or cook, bandana as a pre filter to keep your filtering element clean and clear from clogging. But well done

Greetings from Serbia, I think the equipment from the military backpack is better than the one in the blue backpack, if you could switch everything from a military backpack to a blue backpack plus modify the blue backpack a bit and add a pier system so you can attach extra bags, and thus you could get extra space, mostly put the equipment from the other backpack in the blue backpack, add a folding saw, and some other things ....and you are good for single mom,respect for that,and hope you and your family always good,helth and prepare lol😉😃

Hello in Serbia! Hope you're doing well! I agree, I put all the good gear in the military looking backpack, without realizing that it was harder to carry! I learned my lesson. Backpack and food, sleep, & first aid supplies for the dog - he can carry his own stuff. A lot of what you've got could be lightened up, maybe one item at a time. Check out backpacking gear. If you pick camp locations well you don't need the big shovel or an axe. In 50 years of camping and backpacking I've never needed either. Use a small ultralight trowel in a poop kit. Your son can carry a kit of his own. You want to keep the kits as light as possible, especially if you have to walk long distances. Work gloves are essential! Glad to see you have sunscreen and bug repellent. People often forget them and then they are miserable. I prefer the sawyer squeeze over the mini. If can get a CNOC 2L 28mm thread water bag to use for dirty water and you can set up a gravity purification with either 2 1L Smart bottles or CNOC 28mm thread 1L collapsible bottles.

If you get pressed for bugging out with no one to carry after the vehicle is not useable you could pack all the heavy gear in the back and all the food plus light stuff in the other bag and attach it as a front pack. I did this while my buddy had a back pack and portaged the canoe. I carried about 80 pounds this way. We were out in the Boundary Waters and Quetico for over 2 weeks. Worked even hiking up the rocky cliffs. Take forms of cash, some have silver and gold bars if it gets to that. God bless you

For food I would suggest dried beans, rice, powered milk/butter/powered eggs/flour/potatoes in vacuum bags, salt,pepper, sugar (honey is a much better option if possible), olive oil, ramen, freeze dried mixed vegetables in a vacuum bag. For the same volume of prepackaged food you will be able to carry many more meals. All the food really needs to go in a food bag in my opinion like a larger bear bag you showed. Yes it means you have to cook from scratch but I think having up to twice the meals is well worth it.

@1FAST91SONOMA
@1FAST91SONOMA 2 жыл бұрын
Where I think you're doing great - Food. Mountain House is absolutely the way to go, no question about it. Water prep, you have multiple options for purification. Good, you can never rely on one. Filters freeze and/or clog. Water tablets do not but filters do a lot more volume than the tablets. I like the Morakniv, it is a great knife for the money and it will accomplish a huge percentage of the tasks you need a knife for. We have the same exact hammock so good choice there. They're very tough. The jute twine is dirt cheap and flammable, at that point being a decent cordage is just a bonus. I love the MRE heaters. Excellent option I totally overlooked. They're very useful and produce no light. They can be used to heat your bed too. Where I think you're struggling- I see devided packs that act neither as duplicates or enhancements. Having the stove in one and the gas in another is a decidedly bad choice. I did see the small can in with the stove and while that's great I would recommend at least a BRS 3000T for the other bag. They're about $12-18 and they're a pocket stove that takes up almost no space and very little weight. Also the food and accessory balance seems a bit off... you have 3-7 days worth of food but enough sunscreen for a few weeks. If you balance expectations with the right amount of gear you can have a more cohesive and sensible pack all around. Ideally we want to pack dense but smart. No gaps, but also no waste. Consider either making one pack an enhancement to the other or making full redundancy. I think you're closest to redundancy so that will be the easiest way to go. Recommendations- Skip the paracord entirely. It really has been the standard for too long and it has been beaten. Kevlar cord is a much better option. Heat and abrasion resistant and it is much smaller than paracord. The only downside is that it doesn't melt (you can throw it in the camp fire and it will still be flexible... theres videos demonstrating that here on KZfaq) and it isn't as cheap but to make up for that it is much more useful. You can saw down tree limbs with it. For the sleeping pads, skip the self inflating. They're still just a bag of air at the end of the day and they'll have the same potential problems. For the weight you could have a 3 or 4 inch thick pad instead and it will probably be cheaper as well. Klymit has Factory Second sales on ebay with the same warranty as their normal gear. Get a pad and pillow for under $100, as little as $40 even. Flat pack your tape and cordage, pull the spool out and collapse it down as small as you can. No sense in the wasted space. I recommend carrying clear Gear Aid Tenacious Tape for gear, Gorilla tape for fashioning shelters out of tarps or plastic bags, and some Black gaffers tape for everything you don't want shiny like traps, etc. Get heavy duty (6mil or thicker) contractor bags. They have so many uses from waterproofing a makeshift structure to collecting water, solar shower, buried caches, makeshift poncho, makeshift sleeping pad, etc... they're one of the most important pieces of gear and I don't recall seeing it in your bags. I would cut down on the masks and hand warmers too. Gloves keep hands warm for longer and they help protect your skin. Good gloves are the better option. Tent, you mentioned needing one. I would recommend the Lanshan 2 Pro. It is super light and affordable. It also packs up very small. I can't think of a better option except maybe the Helix 2 from ALPS, since it is at least semi freestanding and the Lanshan is a trekking pole tent. The H2 is heavier and more expensive but the body has poles to support it so it is easier to set up. Especially on hard ground. Swapping the binoculars out for monoculars will save weight and space. There are cheap ($10) monocular options that have 10X magnification. That should be plenty. Overall I think you're doing great but there are a few things that can be improved on. The only better time to improve than now is in the past and we don't live there anymore. I don't say any of this to be rude or judgmental... I say this to help you get the best kit together you can for your survival. There's nothing more important than your survival, for you and your kid. You have to cover the bases and be ready for the curveballs life will throw at you, SHTF or not and you're doing great so far. Keep up the good work. Preppers gotta watch out for each other. Keep improving and growing.

It's great to see more women preparing for the unexpected. It's definitely an evolving / improving kit for all of us. Some suggestions you may find helpful are; Each person / bag needs to be self sufficient. Each needs cover and the other 5 Cs. Military style ponchos are best for each person as they won't rip and are more versatile as cover. As far as a tent goes, you might look at the Kelty 2 man domes. I think they're like 3.5 lbs., a little over $100 and good quality. Eliminate packaging, boxes and containers and use more quality ziploc bags. You already know about the waterproof bags. I would put food in one, clothes in another and light sleeping gear in yet another. They make smaller, plastic bottles of the bug repellant. You can reduce the amount of fire kit to each having a BIC lighter (they last quite awhile if lever is not depressed), a ferro rod, 1 box of UCO matches, a small candle and some cotton / vaseline. Each bag should have a metal container capable of boiling over fire and of course spoons. Recommend titanium but stainless steel is good too. Defense tools are a personal choice but you do live in a 2A friendly region. Really like the big knife! As Croc Dundee would say, THAT'S a knife! Great video and keep on prepping! Rob in GA.
