Ideas? OK here we go: Oversized clothing is a good idea, not just for yourself. Have you ever tried putting clothes on to someone who's in bed? Think about us nurses :). Bring sweat pants. I like zippered hoodies to. Warm socks. Hospitals usually have a higher environmental temperature but being immobile or having a compromised circulation can leave you very cold. Bring enough clothing. 1 pair of socks and skivvies is not enough. Same for t-shirts. It's very possible you'll go through your clothing rapidly. I see alot of people mentioning chapstick and the likes. Be careful with that one. I've seen 1st degree burns because of the combination of grease/oil (Vaseline) on the lips and around the nose with oxygen. Yes, oxygen will dry out the area around your nose and mouth dependent on delivery system i.e. cannula or mask. Use products without grease or oil. Need to shave? Electric razors are good. They're quick, safe and easy to use by someone who isn't used to shaving. Concerning hygiene products. Take what you are used to using at home. Can be a great morale boost. Flip flops or something similar for use in the shower. Helps prevent against athlete's foot and provide grip on wet surfaces. Hospital floors are slippery period so the slippers are a good idea. A way to keep track of date/time. Phones and laptops can help with that but a good old (tear off) calender does wonders in delirium prevention. Make sure you inform the nursing staff about the medications you brought from home. Sometimes can be a great help to bring them specifically if they're uncommon meds. It can take a while for a hospital pharmacy to order some medications. A locking case can be a good thing. Thievery is a thing in hospitals. Marking things with your name helps with returning them to you. Even glasses that have been thrown out with dirty sheets (don't put your glasses underneath your pillow). Hope this helps.

In the notebook do a date, time, when you see, Drs, nurses, lab, what they did, what they said. Times, names, info. get muddled in the hospital. In essence keep a chart on/for yourself. Chap stick/Lypsyl/BurtsBees hospitals are dry.

Great idea! My daughter had cancer and we spent 4 1/2 months in and out of the hospital. A couple of suggestions: soft facial tissue, because hospital ones are rough, and unscented natural lip balm (bad enough to be sick, you don't want your nose chaffed raw, lip balm makes a great skin barrier and moisturizer). I would also suggest a cheap MP3 player. Often there's no cellphone or data service in some areas of the hospital. Having your favorite music can be very comforting.

Good video! My wife requires many emergency treatments for an ongoing problem. I suggest an airplane blanket and a fleece sweater. Hospitals are always kept cool to hinder the spread of germs. Taking her, I wear cargo pants (not shorts do to the cold rooms.) I have a paperback book and book lite in one pocket and snacks & ear phones in the other. I have bottled water in my sweater pocket so now my hands are free to assist her.

A couple more items: - something to mark on your body "THIS SIDE!" in advance of any surgery. You don't want them operating on the wrong hand ... waterproof eyeliner will work, and can be removed with a wipe. A Sharpie will work, too. - if you are going into the hospital fairly healthy, bring some real clothing, like sweats. During my c-sections, I found I was treated much better if I was not wearing a hospital gown. I wore nursing tops and sweatpants. Years ago my brother was hospitalized for an extended stay; he wore scrubs. Depending on the reason for the hospitalization, you may need to wear a gown, but if you can avoid it, do so. In the same vein (pun intended), if you usually wear makeup, bring a small makeup kit with you. Don't forget remover! - if you're bringing tech, try to bring old, less valuable stuff. You're more likely to get an iPhone 11 stolen than a 7 year old 'Droid with a cracked screen.

Lysol wipes. If you are going for a hospital stay you must sanitize everything including the remote or tv controls, tables, handrails. Also MARK YOUR ITEMS WITH YOUR NAME. My dad was recently hospitalized and many of the things that we brought for him were lost or walked away. Lock your suitcase if thats what youre bringing. I brought a canister of Lysol wipes (the hospital used some institutional brand so no way this was an innocent mistake) and left for a few moments, when I came back they were gone... lots of other examples too of things that just magically walk away.

@@TheUrbanPrepper If you have any sheets of Avery (or other) small return labels - like the 80 per page 1.75" x 0.5" , print up a page of "Your name" or "Property of" labels, stick them on everything (you can easily stick a label on a pen or dry erase marker where writing on it would be much harder), and have extras in the bag for items acquired along the way.

I made a bag like that for my mom since she is basically in and out of the hospital all the time. She is really glad that i did because she kept forgetting things at home. I also included in the bag an extended list of emergency contacts, which my mom's nurse and her doctor are aware of. Mine is more like a big clothes module to be integrated in my EDC bag.

Great stuff, this might be my favorite prepper bag as almost everyone has needed some variation on this at some point in their life. I wholeheartedly want to also say - no one is useless in an emergency. I'm very involved with local emergency community programs and we also had someone recently who was disabled, and blind. You could be amazed at how much she was able to contribute and help - there's always a place for you! One thing I would recommend adding to this kit - bring your own shampoo and soap - the one's at the hospital are awful. Also, you may want a small travel pillow and blanket. It can make a world of difference for you or your loved one's that may be there as well. . I'll second what you said on the charger cord, I recently had an emergency stay at the hospital where that was exactly the case and having a phone was my lifeline. It's also very important to have a list of phone number's on hand just in case your phone is lost or dies. Especially in something like a car wreck - your phone may be destroyed and it can be very difficult to remember that information when you are on medications or hurt. Last thing I'll say that was a major concern I found was what to do with my important stuff like wallet, phone, car keys, etc. It would be nice to have a small - locked pouch you can lock in your room in case you need to leave it there for a bit and no one else is with you. (or maybe even somewhere you dictate in the bag to hide things like that)

Recently spent over a month in hospitals during the past 3 months. I can second the eye mask, the single best thing for sleep. Also ear plugs and get them on a string if possible. Even at night hospitals are notoriously noisy and bright. You can loop the mask and plugs on the bed when not in use. Found I didn’t need clothing except something to go home in and underwear. Hospital preferred their gowns as it allows access to iv’s, etc. Bring a bathrobe that is roomy as it may need to fit over iv lines. You will want to walk if allowed and hospital gowns are well lets say airy. Unless you want to be flashing your goodies bring a robe and non slip slippers. Didn’t need meds but took a detailed list of whatever I was taking at the time. Had pictures of the bottles on my phone also. Recommend a 6 ft extension cord to charge up the electronics. Depending on the age of the hospital outlets can be scarce. Also before plugging in ask the staff and they will find the best outlet for you to use. I brought a cheap set of earbuds, my phone and an ipad. The cheap ($30) buds are in the bag but my phone is always on me. The ipad is a last minute item that I or family can bring. I keep generic chargers and cords for all these in the bag. Recommend a soft side duffle as the closets are small and a hard case won’t fit. Also a lock for the bag...just to be safe. Have a copy of your medical power of attorney and living will. In event someone has to make decisions for you, you want the right people making the call. And 10 times yes to the writing pad. Medical staff pop in and out and you barely know who they are....well until the bill comes. When anyone other than the nurses comes in, ask them to write/print their name in your book with the date and time. This way you can keep track of who is seeing you and what they are saying. I saw so many doctors that frequently they didn’t know what the others where recommending hours earlier. You must be your own advocate and if possible keep track of these. Hospital stays are no fun but can be manageable if you go in prepared.

As someone who has been working in healthcare for about 20 years, I recommend a shirt with buttons in the front versus a t-shirt. You may have ECG cords with a wireless telemetry box which can be stored in the pocket, also because you may have an IV and it'll be easier to get on and off and finally because you may not be able to put your arms over your head depending on the reason why you're there. You'd be amazed at how deconditioned you can get just after a few days in the hospital. Great video!

One advantage a backpack has over a suitcase is that it can be more easily accessed in tighter spaces. Just thinking about smaller hospital rooms where a splayed out suitcase might take up too much space, whereas a backpack can be set up in a chair.

Note: Flushable wipes aren't actually flushable. They'll mess up the plumbing and septic systems. Lip balm and hand lotion would be nice to have on hand (or on lip, hehe) as well. A portable fan or heater for some temperature control. I'm one of those people who need control over the temperature in order to go to bed. A fan would also help drown out any noise without adding obnoxious sounds of its own. Some of those salsa packs you can get at fast food places for extra flavor. Provided it's okay, of course.

I work in a hospital. With regard to having a few days supply of your prescription medication, realize that you will not be allowed to keep them in your room. They will likely be stored until your discharge. If you take unusual meds that the hospital might not normally have in it’s Formulary, definitely take some of those. Finally, in lieu of a Kindle, there are Kindle apps for your phone, tablet, or laptop that I’ve used for years.

As someone who had a family member in the hospital for a few weeks, and spent a few days myself, I wouldn't bother with the urinal or throw up bags since the hospital will provide them. The entertainment and comfort/clothing modules are on point, but make sure your name or phone number is on your items in case they are misplaced and end up in lost and found. For the hygiene module I would highly recommend chapstick and (unscented) hand lotion because hospital air can be DRY. Tip for contact-lense wearers...leave them at home and bring your glasses instead to avoid touching your eyes while in the hospital an have a sturdy case to store them at night. Also, no matter if they say "flushable" do NOT put wipes in the toilet or you will damage the plumbing and sewage system. They help in the formation of "fatburgs" and yes it is as disgusting as it sounds.

I had to grab :- - toothbrush, shaver and one shared charger - soap, shampoo, toothpaste - ready in the backpack - change of underwear - dumped draw into backpack but of course half in wash (and at home or most places can wash and dry clothes every few days so don’t have weeks supply of clean clothes - no washing serve in hospital not even a paid one) - dressing gown: as hospital and their gowns leave you exposed to the elements and view - no one needs to see that even if I don't care -- change of clothes and loose fit to go over tubes, cables and electrodes glued to your skin and avoid sensitive areas of injury - slippers or very comfortable shoes that can be worn without socks - not for walking but to keep feet warm when sitting in a chair - or socks with a grip on the sole - yes the hospital in the UK give these to you put if you have already so much the better - towel - as every traveller and hitch-hiker knows you have to know where your towel is. I have a large bath microfiber towel (yes the hospital has towels, and in the UK free, and you can ask for them anytime and have a shower assuming the cables reach or you can disconnect from the monitors but staff are so busy you can wait all morning before they get around to your request) - phone and charger (no phone signal in a Faraday cage but they have good wi-fi although many web sites did not respond at Hitchingbrook but did at Papworth bandwidth not blocked?) - tablet/laptop and charger if different - cables power and transfer from phone to tablet/laptop is needed -- microSD card or USB memory stick loaded with films you have not yet watched (wi-fi goes down and streaming content may not work) -earphones or headphones (TV with Freeview is free in UK hospitals unless Addenbrooks still charges, and they have both earbuds and headphones that are workable but not particularly good when you ask) - every day carry of -- comb - - torch (finding stuff dropped under the bed at night), - - pocket knife (- you try to open the juice tubs without spilling it everywhere and with needles in your arms - cutting nails, tags anything else after a month in CCU my nails where very long, razor sharp and broke on their own when I started to use my hands and I had no idea how wire hard and long the little hairs in nose, ears and eyebrows became if not trimmed - so tweezers were useful) -- money (if you need taxi home or something from the vending machine when they kick you out of the room to the waiting for transport room at the front entrance) -- locks for you bags you never know who wanders around a hospital (not under Coronavirus but normally)

Some hospital systems won't let patients wear shoes. Where I worked, we gave patients color-coded socks: green was standard, red was for fall risks, orange was for potential drug seekers, and black was for combative/psych patients.

Wow, that’s an extensive hospital go bag. It includes a lot of items I would never put in my hospital bag. And I’ve had quite a lot of surgeries in the past years. The hospitals I’ve been to will have disposable washcloths or wipes. They will even heat up the disposable washcloths in the microwave if you can’t shower. The disposable washcloths may also be used when you go to the toilets. If you may wish use them. They will have throw up bags in each room. They will help you with going to the toilet, if necessary. And they have toilet options for those who can’t leave there room. The hospitals has whiteboards markers in each room. So no need to bring those. The powerbank can be replaced with an extra long charging cable. At least that’s what I use and works for me. I can’t focus after anesthesia, some don’t bring a book. If I do want to read, I’ll use a tablet. There are also a few items that I always take with me that weren’t mentioned in your video: slippers (you’re not allowed to walk around barefoot), did you mention an eyelash? Helps me sleep, bathrobe (you may not be able to wear pants or shorts), lip balm, case for my glasses. If you have problems with mental health it can help to put on paper how hospital staff can de to keep you as stress free as possible. Include what your symptoms look like and what your possible triggers are. That’s what I can think of at the moment.

Hearing aid batteries are a must if you wear them. Even in the hospital, it'll be next to impossible to get them conveniently. An extra pair of eyeglasses, as well. Pack shoes. The sad reality is you'll more likely need the clothes for your trip home than your trip there, because hospitals are notorious for losing your stuff. Metal straws won't pass muster for security. Don't bother.

I've taken tylenol travel tubes, emptied them & slapped my prescription labels on each 1. Last year when I was in the hospital for knee surgery, I had to bring my own nasal prescription sprays and glaucoma eye drops with me. I did have my first aid kit (brought in extra meds that they never give me even though its prescribed to me) I took my kindle & cell phone, my electronics kit, small amount of personal care stuff & and of course my knitting.

Some hospitals have loaner laptops. My hospital has them available through the gift shop; and are free to “rent.” For ppl food allergies, they may want to bring foods that are well tolerated and easy on your digestive tract. I’m allergic to artificial sweeteners, so I bring fruit cups, applesauce, and gummies in case I need something sweet. Might want to pack soups you like in case the hospital foods aren’t appetizing. They usually have hot water on demand readily available. I would also pack a multi port surge protector. It will give you enough outlets, as well as some for your visitors and possible roommate. If you have an ornery roommate, the gesture of sharing some ports might curry favor for their pet peeves.

This preper film couldn’t have come at a better time. Although the operation is going to be done with an epidural and I am meant to be going home on the same day, anything can happen. I would also add some lip balm & a travel size hand moisturizer. Also some dry shampoo - rinse less shampoo as your hair gets dirty/oily & you can't shower most times. Your favorite mouthwash. Hospital toiletries are not the best tasting or quality. A sharpie to label everything the hospital gives you plastic bags or just use gallon zip top bags to store your items. I was recently in the hospital & just used my smart phone to send texts & watch Netflix . They don't like you to take expensive items. Have a healthcare power of attorney (scanned into the cloud) For women I think a dress is easier to get in & out of in a hospital & front zipper or buttons/snaps as they hook up all those cables for the monitors. Thank you cards to give to the wonderful nurses that take good care of you.

I would add ear plugs as the 3 weeks I spent in hospital I slept very little. I would add a few coins & a few small bills. @ambissing

I would add chapstick and for women, dry shampoo with a brush, bathrobe and hand lotion. The hospital can get really cold so a warm or weighted blanket is awesome for people. Extra set of reading glasses, hearing aid batteries, contact lenses case and travel solution. The hospital will have body wipes and urinals, so don't worry about those unless you have a brand you especially like. They have disposable razor and shaving cream but again, if you like a specific brand, bring that. Headphones are handy and portable fans. I work in a hospital and I think your suggestion of slippers and looser clothing is spot on, also the long charging cables, ear plugs and eye mask. Maybe add a travel neck pillow.

One thing to keep in mind for really large patients with incontinence issues, the pull up briefs don't come in extra large sizes. The hospital makes you wear these terrible giant diapers whose sticky tape doesn't stick well at all. They look like giant diapers from the 70s. I would recommend checking and finding some for the go bag ahead of time for anyone who is plus sized.

Tnx for doing this video, not just for the valuable topic, but also to show that preparedness isn't all about the sky falling and TEOTWAWKI ... in many cases it's about the mindset you have towards everyday things that can go wrong for any of us at any time, and then taking a pro-active response by planning and figuring out the type of 'gear' (or simply items) that will improve your situation were this thing to happen to you...

Great Job of well thought out stuff. When ever I go with a loved one to the Drs or hospital, I always pack a bag for me, because I’m there all day with them after they have been admitted. Usually I have cords, iPads, phone, ear phones to listen to reading material, music , movies, food, and sodas in small cooler, a small throw blanket for napping, usually they are mostly sleeping and I have to entertain myself. I’ve found if I don’t bring it they have to stay in the hospital, if I bring it they don’t ?!

Funny how we spend all our time prepping for a zombie apocalypse, but we never think to prepare for a hospital stay, lol. Very awesome, informative video! For entertainment, my smartphone covers so many things. I have music, the Kindle app, a few games. I definitely gotta have my Logitech K480 bluetooth keyboard, which I have connected to my smartphone, so I can type anything on it just like a full desktop PC (and it's definitely more lightweight than a laptop). It runs on two AA alkaline batteries, which last forever. I've only had to change out the batteries once in the several years that I've owned it. That'll make it easy to type texts or e-mails, or just to type cheesy fanfiction on Google Docs. XD I would also have my 8bitdo SN30 Pro controller, which is wireless and compact, and can be used for some Android retro emulated games.

GREAT video! I just had surgery and stayed one night. I used most of the items I brought. I was most thankful to have my long phone charger, baby wipes, hand sanitizer and clean clothes to wear home. I packed very lightly assuming I would only be there one night. But I packed a second backpack that we left in the car. The idea with that was if I had to stay an extended period of time my fiancé could just bring me the whole bag. As opposed to telling him where to find my travel toiletries for a shower, and which clothes I would want him to bring etc.

I can personally vouch for the Sony MDRXB50AP earbuds. I've used them in my office job for music, audiobooks, phone calls, and video calls for over 6 years. My first pair lasted 5 years of all-day-everyday use. My second pair is still in use. The felt bag they come in is shockingly durable. We have however preped for this and introduced on each area I PADS for the patients to communicate with family and we also have hand out packs with much of what you have shown in the video. One of my colleagues and close friends suffered a stroke and 2 things which may sound stupid was a diary and paper callendar. the diary was used by staff as dave was unconscious but had info so when he recovered could fill in the blanks, and again the callendar just to keep orientated, as one day can be much like the next sometimes and days merge. as for people with disabilities being less useful, you have to have ability to have disability :P

Bring your own soap. The last hospital I was in had no soap other than a bottle of body wash / shampoo. It was nasty, smelly, and very greasy. Rinsing this stuff off your body took three times longer to get off than normal soap. And that extra time in the shower is no good when you're still relatively weak from whatever illness or injury your recovering from. So, bring soap and a storage container to put it in.

A hospital bag is a great idea. Someone I knew used to have one. In an out of a hospital for an older frail person is hard. I suggest a lightweight bag that is easy for anyone to carry, no electronics especially in the icu. The hospital check ins and inventory list usually ask you to take laptops home. Extra clothing and a medication list was the most important. Extra pair of glasses is also good. The ear plugs and eye mask are great ideas. Thanks for the ideas.

I highly recommend you have the following items printed out and in your hospital go-bag: A list of your daily medications with strength and necessary details. A summary of your health showing any prior surgeries, allergies, etc. Also a copy of your health care directive. If you don't have a health care directive document that has been notarized, it is time to have one if you are of adult age! I would also suggest a small fleece lap blanket that can be used as a shawl or to roll up and use as an additional pillow, etc. A lightweight robe is also nice for when they make you walk up and down the hall for exercise and make you wear those hospital gowns!

I just spent a week in the hospital. I wish I had a book to note all the Drs, PAs, nutritionists, etc that came in and results of the conversations. The bills are coming in and I wonder who half these people are. I found myself needing a long (10ft) charging cable, extra underwear, urinary pads, something to read and nail clippers. (I thought I would just go to the ER and sent home. Never thought I would be admitted.) Also make extra sets of house keys and arrange to have your pets taken care of beforehand.

I would recommend a much more complete flavor suite to combat bland hospital food than afforded by a simple salt/pepper shaker. Think of how you season meals at home: bring it (in mini shakers/containers)! Meals are way marks through the day at a hospital. Make it a morale boost as well by flavoring it past the edge of edibility into the realm of downright palatability.
