Thank you! Informative and inspirational, as usual. Love my Frogg Toggs. Recently had the opportunity (ie. rain no wind and no bush bashing) to try out a poncho. Gotta rate it! Breathable, kept me dry in shorts and T-shirt, and covered my pack perfectly. Also perfect dual purpose as very handy groundsheet/tarp (Kmart heavy duty poncho for the win!). And yep, always try to make room for a beer 🍻

These videos are so helpful, I learn from them. something I'm trying now, it cost a little but I bought some hyperlite packing pods, and I don't use a pack liner. Suprisingly that gave me a small weight savings. I haven't been out with t yet but I think it'll work pretty good

Excellent video, I love to see what other hikers bring! For anyone on a budget like me, I got a very cheap short vango aotrom airmat and carry a similar size foam mat. The foam acts as a sit pad during the day and insulation under the mat at night. Weight is about 250g altogether. I put my empty pack under my feet. I think of it as a compensation for being a shortarse!

Some great gear there! I have the Z-Packs Duplex, & love that tent. It stood up to some pretty ferocious winds on South Molle Island, in the Whitsundays. I keep looking at the Fjall Raven pants... but yep they cost some $$$. Might need to get a pair, as my current hike pants have already got repairs... Thanks for sharing 😄 🏕

Can confirm fjallraven pants are worth it. I have some abisko zip offs, did a bunch of river crossings and got soaked, they dry so quickly and don't tear going through scrub, they so clever where they put the durable vs lighter weight material to give the most comfort and durability. Plus their pockets are huge and in good spots. Can easily carry a folding saw on your thigh and not even notice.

Love this video - thank you! I love the look of the pack - it's the one thing I could cut a tonne of weight with. Were you able to try one on prior to ordering the custom one? The only other items I bring with me are a home made food cozy to keep my food hot while I'm rehydrating dinner (out of silver lined bubble wrap that came with a food delivery once, gaffer tape and a plastic clothes peg) and a screw top container that once held some Suisse vitamins for rehydrating couscous for lunch. It fits exactly in the titanium pot you have, as I use the same one :) I'm a massive fan of powdered peanut butter - it also makes a killer breakfast with oats, freeze dried apples, chia seeds and powdered milk...

Amazing Julieanne love the food cozy idea and the rehydration container. Cheers. I wasn’t able to try on the pack so I stuffed around a lot with measuring myself and counting bumps on my back etc. they have a good guide and videos on their website for that. And in the end I had a few email chats with them about my measurements and they helped guide me. Cheers

I’ve just been watching you on Alone, Australia and was really impressed. I know it’s all over now, but I’m hoping you were the last standing! I’ve been watching lots of videos like yours getting my daughter ready for her first 4 day lightweight hike (Dragon Skin). I think she overpacked, but it’s all a learning experience. I’ll look into some of that gear- those socks look super comfy!

Gold. Thanks Merindah. I’m sure she will have a blast. I hate to think about the weight of my pack in my earlier years. My biggest tip would be to review your gear after each hike. Add new stuff remove the stuf you don’t need and slowly upgrade if you need. Best of luck

Thanks mate. Great question. I think it’s about 15 un crushed but it’s good with my summer sleeping bag. I’m packing for a closer hike now and I can’t fit much more than the sleeping bag and thermals.

This was awesome thank you for sharing your knowledge and tips. It’s awesome that you use Ultras, I haven’t used that brand but i have been into barefoot shoes for a long time. I recently did a 3 day hike in the Flinders Ranges with my Vivobarefoot Primus Trails and loved them. I also mix them up with my Vibram V-Trails 2.0 and they provide so much grip. I’ll have to look into the Ultras as the water resistance would be helpful. Keen to check out more of your content.

@KateGrarock My pleasure. I can relate to that I'm not sure if I have wider feet, my wife thinks they are ugly lol! I know I have flat feet and arch support drives me nuts. Xero Shoes, Shamma Sandals, Vivobarefoot, and Vibram have all served me well over the years. It's great to see more brands entering this space and offering alternatives to traditional footwear. Keep up the great work!

Hi Kate. Thanks for this super helpful video and all of the information on your gear! I was wondering - how do you find the traction on the Altras? I have read some reviews that weren't great, but love the idea of the natural toe shape etc. Also, I'm looking at the non-waterproof ones. When it rains I'm assuming you just chuck on the gaiters? Thanks for your help!

So great to hear. Yeah I really like them. I do prefer the non waterproof ones. You do feel the water with gaiters on but my feet sweat a lot when I wear waterproof shoes in slightly warmer weather. As for the grip I’ve been pretty impressed. I have only had one issue but I think most shoes would struggle. I was in a deep gorge with rocks that had a slimy growth. However I have read people being less than impressed with the grip. I did read there is an altra model that has better grip but it think it’s a bulkier shoe.

I just found your channel and am loving it! Wish list: I would love more information about the atom pack and why you went for this option rather than somewhere local (like OrangeBrown), and your thoughts on frameless packs in general. Thank you for the awesome work you do!

Thanks mate. Great question re atom. I love love love the look of orangebrown gear and hope to try one of there packs one day. I think I went with the atom as it does have a small frame in it. I’ve had frameless before and I find I like the way the frame (even a tiny one) holds the gear off your back slightly. But let’s be honest I have only used one frameless pack before and maybe it just wasn’t that great. I also just fell head over feet for the colour options for atom packs although I see orangebrown have some pretty great colours now too. Atom packs are also made with cool fabric that used recycled plastic bottles. But yeah mostly the cool colours, tiny frame and loved the weight. I’d love love love to try a few other packs like from orangebrown or wilderness threadworks or hyperlite mtn gear but I guess I had to pick one. Do you have OB pack? What do you think? Would love to hear more about them.

@@KateGrarock Aww thanks for the reply - stoked! Atom vs OB: yes, the frame! I can relate. I would love to support an Aussie made product and their work looks beautiful - but I don't have enough experience with frameless packs to commit. I reckon if I'd seen a couple of video reviews from people who had done multi-day hikes with an OB pack, I might have formed a different opinion. I have bought most of my walking stuff from watching detailed reviews on YT (or via fellow-hiker-jealousy haha). How can I tag an OB owner/creator here? Let Kate borrow a pack and make a video please! Right now I prefer the atom's stretchy pocket at the front, the side pocket placement looks ideal and the hipbelt options on the atom+ and mo are pretty schmick (speaking as a short-torso'ed, wide-hipped woman LOL). And oh boy, the colours are flipping awesome. I can't believe I'm willing to pay an extra $60 to choose my own but YES I AM. Just doing a little zooming in and pausing on your video, I think you might have gone with the Atom+, right? Is it holding up well? And weirdly specific question but with the carbon frame, would you trust it to hold up in checked luggage at the airport? Thanks again for the reply

@@evesouthwood7633 a lot of the big name ultralight USA brands are frameless. I think the theory if you can pack below 10kg then frameless is good. Love this guys blog for more on frameless vs frame www.thehikinglife.com/gear/backpack/ Would love to see a vid with OB gear too. I did have a brief chat to OB and they can do the bold colours that come with their smaller packing cubes and they do do custom. Yep mine is the Atom + Ive scratched it against a lot of fire regrowth and granite and its going really well. Its a touch heavier than I had anticipated as I needed wide hip belt and got all the pockets. Yes the frame feels great and is well protected by the pack itself. I tend to pack it inside my hard case for hiking trips though as I have had the luxury of having a place to store it while hiking. I think my next pack will be frameless.

Thanks mate. Yes it’s doing great. Done a good chunk of bush bashing. It’s a little blacker than it once was. But even the base of the pack is doing well. I got the additional pocket for rubbish in the base of the pack - while I never use it for rubbish, it’s great for adding extra protection from rough rocks. I love it. I have been eyeing off a few local brands recently. Not because I’m disappointed, just as I’d love to be using more home grown gear. Check out neve, Orange brown and wilderness threadworks. They are making some exciting looking gear I’m keen to try out one day. Cheers

Hi Kate. Re the Nitecore light, do you ever use the lowest setting? Around camp I only use the lowest setting on my Fenix light, which is 30 lumens versus 1 lumen on the Nitecore. 30 is dim, but more than adequate, but 30x dimmer doesn't sound usable. Thanks

Sometimes I use it for reading or as a night light when setting down for the night. But yep if I’m out moving around I use the brighter setting.

I've just found your channel, and this video is excellent. So nice to see AU content! I've been lightening my gear over the last year, and while I'm not as UL as you yet, I'm moving in the right direction at least. (lightweight maybe) I'm upgrading my pack next, so I'll dig out your pack review also. How did you go with sizing? I'm assuming that you had to order a custom job online? Did you have your torso length etc? Also, no hip belt pockets? A lot of people online have mentioned using them and liking them for snax?

Thanks mate. Appreciate the kind words. Yeah this pack doesn’t come standard with pockets but there are attachments. I guess I tend not to use them as I have a waist pouch I carry film gear in that would get in the way. I love my atom pack and just followed their online instructions re sizing. I love that the atom has a small frame in it. And I think it looks cool too. wilderness threadworks is a cool Australian brand that looks great too.

@@KateGrarock oh cool, I'll check out Wilderness Threadworks too, I've not seen them before. I've got some things from Tier Gear who were also really helpful, but they don't do packs. Did you go straight into ultralight packs? Or have a trad pack before that? I'm struggling to get to lightweight, let alone a 40l pack size. I think I might still need a 45 or 50...but then I feel like I'll just fill it and be carrying too much weight again!

@@andycjohnston yeah totally it is weird buying packs that are often only 40l and that includes outside pockets. I snapped up a bargain Patagonia 45 l years ago was about 1kg. Was a good step from my stupidly heavy 3kg 85l pack. Wilderness threadworks could be very similar in a great step but now ultra ultralight. They tend to be a sniff bigger and round the 1kg mark.

Cool shakedown! Great to see some ultralight content in Australia - standard advice here is still a 60 litre 3kg pack and 3kg tent etc. 😆 .. some could be enjoying their hikes more than they do. A simple one, where are your plastic bag liners from? A couple of sites here sell nylofume but with $15 postage, I’d prefer to find something from bunnings or something I can always count on finding. Also, why don’t you just drink direct from the sawyer squeeze? (well that’s what I do anyway, using a skinny litre bottle) Cheers!

Thanks Nick. Pretty sure they were bunnings. The name on pack is “glad commercial pack 50 heavy duty clear bags, extra large 70-77 litre”. Re the sawyer I have tried it a few times but I guess it’s not something I like doing. I’m a bit of a water guzzler so love a good fast flow. Haha. Thanks for watching

@@KateGrarock on one reply, a guy said he uses an exped schnozzel .. a big poly pump bag which can double purpose as a liner.. don’t know if it fits x air, read it fits Nemo and S2S pads so maybe

Hi Kate (and fellow Kate groupies) I am looking to switch to powdered milk too - for 1-2 days I usually pop those little UHTs in- but want to cut down on waste. I know the measurements for larger quantities but what’s the right amount for a coffee ? One spoonful ? Basically I don’t want white water nor cream consistency. Do you have any recommendations on amounts. And yes I realise this is the most basic of questions

I tend to do 2 spoons, but it's definitely worth testing it out at home first to make sure it's how you like it

Heya Kate, do you check your pack in if you're taking it on a plane? I'm a bit nervous about the pack and gear getting damaged through baggage handling, it's a bit rougher than what I put it through 😂

Yes such a worry hey. I try to pack it inside a real suitcase but realise that only works if you have somewhere to leave the suitcase at the other end. My suitcase was once lost and in the thankfully brief time it was missing I did freak out adding up the cost of all my lost gear. If you have to take only your bag maybe look into a protective bag like the zip up large shopping bags or thick plastic bag. The. Try to give it to someone at the other end. It’s hard hey. Let me know if you find a good solution because I have had a few holes in packs from airport transportation

Thanks for answering so fast, I am from Canada and I really like you videos, I also find you very brave hiking and camping considering you have the most venomous snakes is the world, plus you also have the Sydney funnel-web (Atrax robustus) spider, Apis mellifera (honey bee), crocodiles, Bull Sharks, Blue-ringed octopus, Ixodes holocyclus (Australian Paralysis tick,) Bull Ant, Giant centipede, you are indeed a brave woman. In my country we have Bears all of them (brown, black Kodiak, Grizzly, Polar), Moose (they kill more humans than bears), Mountain Lion, wolves, wolverine (similar to the aggressive behaviour of the Tasmanian Devil) but much much bigger. All I can say is WOW!
