Pruitt: I knew I felt a kinship with ya. Also a Pentacostal kid who also loved the cartoon. Also caught flack for it. However, guilted by my youth group at the annual convention, I "gave up D&D for good". ** TRIGGER WARNING ** (and believe me, I NEVER give those) After the convention, I went home, and at our next youth group meeting, we rid ourselves of the things we confessed to each other.......and I tossed ALL my D&D books in a burn barrel. I basically had everything 1e and anything 2e up until about 1990. You may weep now.

I really like the post-apocalyptic "recovery" genre where the apocalypse has happened, but it was a long time ago. Where a new stable society has emerged but it's at a lower level of technology and there are still the ruins of impossibly advanced ancient wonders that nobody understands any more. If you're looking for inspiration in that vein, I can really recommend "Riddley Walker" by Russell Hoban, which is set in a new bronze age, several thousand years after the collapse of our own culture and lets you perceive our own "ancient wonders" through the eyes of the characters.

This was awesome! Especially loved the part where you all discussed magic/the feel of magic. Thinking about what would be in my own Appendix N got me to realize that I might be far less well-read/watched than the average ttrpg content creator, but maybe that's good in a way? I think I tend to pull heavily from song lyrics. A single word or phrase can kickstart a whole major world building thing for me, and usually the end result isn't really related at all to the original song I pulled from. Example, the song Threshold by Hammerfall contains the line "At the threshold of the universe", which inspired a location in my setting that a whole story arc revolved around in one campaign. A single lyric taken out of context kept ballooning out into more and more ideas with history and cosmic significance in my setting. Anyways good to see a new video, and I'm looking forward to whatever's next!

That wasn't a problem with your headphones, it was a weird thing going on in the video (I probably would've done the same, but I don't usually look at the videos while listening to them, I'm usually doing something else at the same time [and as such often {but still less than half of the time} "watch" the videos multiple times]). It’s really interesting seeing the reactions of non-Americans to the influence of Christian Nationalism on the American Protestant Church…like, oh yeah, not all Christians believe things like god has chosen America as his nation on this Earth and it’s the duty of the Church to enact his will by opposing abortion and Islam/Communism. I remember a when I was really young the preachers would still talk about communists in the sermons lol I used to have these vivid nightmares about Revelation and the Rapture. I think the Rapture might be the thing that scared me the most, tied with the idea that only God knew who had achieved salvation, I was so afraid that one day I’d wake up and find my family’s clothes scattered around the house like in the Left Behind books (I was allowed to read them when I was way too young, and they aren’t even any good 😬). Oof growing up Southern Baptist is a trip haha 😅

This conversation was fantastic. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall for this talk. As a 15 year DM, theater major/history minor in college and moderately invested in classic literature but very invested in how storytelling functions, this hit so many of my favorite topics. And when quest for glory came up, *kisses fingers* muah. Not only did I love the series, my favorite campaign I ran was similar to QFG1. based off the Thunder Rift 2e book sort of mixed in with Pathfinders' Rise of the Runelords that I started homebrewing. As always, amazing video Dael :)

Really enjoyed this. All the D&D settings that come to mind are post-apocalyptic to some degree, and this should make exploration more prominent, not less. It prompts the question: with 5e having so many gaps in exploration, and with so many low-level abilities that are so utilitarian, shouldn't there be a major setting that dispenses with the pretense and just takes place in a more-or-less consistently progressing world? If you spend any time thinking about a D&D world in which there was no lost golden age, a world where all the most powerful magic is recently devised and is gradually improving the lives of the common man, the details start to write themselves. Just keep asking, how is it possible to have a world in which all these mythological or horror-story things are still around-or in which they weren't always around but now are? What if magic used to be cruder but people accepted the tradeoffs for the sake of survival, and now that survival isn't as much of a struggle for much of the world, those places are figuring out how to make it cleaner/safer/more ethical? That world is going to have lots of conflict and interesting choices to make, and not make it seem like your characters missed the really epic stuff.

My appendix is odd cause I can't quite pin point where my inspirations come from. I almost exclusively play home brew, but a lot of stuff in my world is inspired more so by history and mythology I suppose and not stories or movies I've seen. If anything, a lot of my world building are elements that subvert existing tropes because I think it's more interesting. Drow in my current setting are beef cake barbarian sorcerers that fight with serrated greatswords and using blood to invoke magic.

Love the new series idea... Also reading Peter Bebergal's 'Appendix N' right now - an apt name for inspirational material. And Snow Crash is legitimately amazing. Without it there's no Matrix. There's *definitely* no Ready Player One. But it's so much more than just cyberpunk - it reaches into ancient history, language, mythology and the programming of the human mind itself. Genius ideas expressed by a master of the form.

As someone who is still a very religious Christian. A TTRPG based loosely on stuff like the Book of Enoch, Revelations, & other Abrahamic Apocalyptic literature would be pretty metal. Heck one based broadly on traditional Abrahamic cosmology (as opposed to the boring pop culture bull crap) would be really cool, provided it didn't shoehorn in any of the cringe modern tropes of "God is Evil" or it's "Order vs. Chaos not Good vs. Evil" that does not actually fit in that setting. Still I am not sure I trust anyone to pull it off, as most folks would muck it up in some manner or another. You'd need someone with enough respect for the source material to pull it off right, but not so stuck up their own ass to make sure it's actually fun to play.

awesome show, i have a little bit of unwanted constructive advice to Jim though: if you would say "like" a little bit less often, your speech would get much easier to listen to. or maybe he was a bit tired, and i'm being unnecessarily mean now. humans are humans afterall. just wanted to put this out without any ill intent, just so anyone who knows he/she does it could consider it and be more conscious about it in the future. edit: just noticed that in fact it's not just Jim so just ignore it is directed at a specific person :')

Gideon the Ninth. Anyone who isn't adding this to their D&D is wrong. Just straight up fucking up necromancy. The Unspoken Name. This is how dark gods work. This is a magic system that feels right. This is crushed empires trying to stay relevant. A Dowry of Blood. Vampires. Did you read this? Congrats, you can understand them now. Star Eater. A new take on the undead, and a new take on religion based around cannibalistic themes. When Tiger Came Down The Mountain. Monks. Spirit creatures. Magic and history as the same thing. The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. Space, with contact. Learning how to live in that universe, and try to expand the benefits to new species. Learning how to live with your own feelings and past, when you're not sure you like them. I guess: read lgbt+ spec/fic. It seems to be the only place where there's actual innovation and improvement. I've sworn off anything else for now. I went into quarantine thinking about the same boring crap, and am now leaving quarantine enlightened by the state of modern publishing.
