I liked the custom XLR plugs from Cable Techniques. My wireless lav kit is cheaper Rodelink stuff, and was using a 1/8" patch cable combined with Rode VXLR adapters. Being able to custom make a 1/8" TRS direct to XLR with short plugs not only is one less component in the wiring, but is taking up less space in the bag overall. Thanks for this video.

Totally completely excellent video!! I tried a KT Junior but sent it back as it was too small for my 633 and it was too rolly-polly (would not stand up without kick stand). You proved it is not too small. If K-Tek had this video on their web site I probably would have kept it and known how to configure it.

I'm thinking about picking up Junior bag to have the option of having a nice compact bag for the 75% of the work and then having my larger Stingray Small Mixer bag for when I'm running a more demanding workflow. My gear and cabling(low profile) is very similar. Do you ever feel cramped running camera hops/TC/Coms plus your 4 wires and boom in that bag? BTW great idea on the filter case!

couple of questions. 1) how heavy is your bag? 2) does the bag stand up straight when you put it on the ground? because the base area is so small. i am thinking it might just flop over. 3) do you use harness with this bag? if so, does the foldable kickstand at the bag causes discomfort to your belly when you use it with the harness?

Hi Derrick, The bag is about 13lbs once the transmitters are deployed to talent. The base of the Stingray Jr bag doesn't stand up on it's own - as you've noticed, it is a narrow bag and has a rounded pair of rubber "feet". I do typically use a harness when wearing this bag. I did suggest to K-tek that they make the Kickstand removable, maybe we'll see that on their next iteration. You may notice the kickstand feeling uncomfortable on your stomach after a really long day, but it's not something that bothers me much. Probably depends on the stomach and/or height it's worn at.

@@HubLocationSound hey thanks for your quick reply. Yeah, the weight is around the same as mine after giving TX to talent. But I am using the stock bag for 633 as it's super light weight. I wanted to change to k-tek jr but it's has quite abit of weight when it's empty. Yeah, the kickstand is a brilliant idea but I am just concerned about it being uncomfortable to the belly. Hahaha

What organization! Thank you for sharing. I would like to know how you are doing to give power to the receivers? Which cable do you use? I have the impression that this kind of connection is made to bind the receivers to the Sony camera for example. Actually, I ended up with Lectrosonics SRc5P Dual-Ch having a connection for Sony Cameras while I want to use them directly on my audio recorder. Do I need to have Mounting Kit for Stand Alone Operation or is there another solution? Thank you

Adam BD Hi Adam, My SR receivers have Lectro SUPERSLOT DB25 plates on them. The cables shown in this video are custom made. The DB25 pinout info can be found in the SRUNI or SUPERSLOT MANUALS on Lectrosonics.com if you’re interested in building your own DB25/D-Sub connectors. I used Hirose 4 pins to feed power to the SR’s from the AudioRoot BDS. So each DSUB looms out to a pair of either XLR or TA3 connectors for 2 channels of audio + Hirose4pin cable to power each unit.

Hey Jim, great video. One of my biggest pet peeves about my current bag setup is that I have to take the whip antennas off my SRc's or else they get deformed under the cover (I have an Orca bag at the moment - though I did just buy a Stingray Jr because your setup just looks fantastic and my Orca bag is just way too big). But I notice on your SRc's you have some kind of folding antennas and thought that those would be great for me too. However, when I went looking for them, I couldn't find any for A1, only ones for block 19 or 20 or 21, etc. So did you actually find some for A1 or are you just limiting your frequencies to one of the blocks? Thanks

Hey Bob, glad you found the video helpful… Since the SRc's cover 3 blocks, you just choose the antenna tuned to your center block (so for A1 that'd be BLK19). Here's a link to the A1 Lectro Swivel antennas... Hope this helps www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/823692-REG/BI/21832/KBID/28200

@@bob76451 Blk 19 “covers” all of A1 according to Lectro. If you wanted to carry 3 sets of antennas, you sure could, but Lectro states the difference in reception performance using an antenna tuned one block from another is negligible. That’s why they ship from the factory with just one set of whip antenna (tuned to the middle of the units available spectrum).

Do you get any RF interference from the Audioroot distro? I just got that same distro and I think the OLED display is causing interference when the receivers are very close. I'm getting it with my LR receivers.

tuberstoma No, haven’t experienced any rf spray with that BDS and I own 2 of them (one in each bag 633 and 688). I don’t use my LR’s in my bag typically (usually reserved for camera hops). What else do you have in your bag?Have you tested the amount of rf spray by creating more distance between the bds and the wireless? Ie. Does it decrease the further from each other?

If you’re savvy with soldering, the pin-out for the DB25/D-subs can be found in the manual/data sheet for the Lectrosonics SRUNI or SRSUPER back plate. If you don’t need DB25 connectivity I don’t think it would be any more cost-effective than just buying the SREXT. I have D-subs in this 633 bag because I have a larger bag with an SL6 which requires D-subs. So it makes it easier for me to swap them between the two bags.

Hub Location Sound ya I have the same situation. 688 bag with SL6. Making a 302/702t backup bag/light rig(688 is a back killer).The SREXT are $150 each trying to see if the components would be cheaper for the dsub and just trying to figure out the soldering.

Well, I am new in the sound world. As I have seen you are using multiple dual receivers and transmitters. Could you please elaborate on what is the function of these and why are you using multiple of those? Thanks

Those dual receivers can receive 2 separate channels of wireless audio. So this bag setup could receive up to 4 Wireless Lavaliers at once (assuming you have 4 transmitters). I'd record those 4 signals individually (multitrack files) and use the mixer to create a live mix/blend of those various sources which would often be wirelessly transmitted (using a separate 5th transmitter) from the sound bag to a camera, several cameras and or IFB's (for clients, director, producers etc to monitor).

Tales Manfrinato Thanks! I thought I mentioned it in the video, but perhaps I didn’t. My larger bag has a 688+SL6 which houses the Lectrosonics SRC slot receivers and since the connectivity there is DB25/Dsub, I made the 633 bag connectivity match that so I can hot swap the receivers pretty quickly from bag to bag when needed.

Thank you Jim! I’m new to location sound and I wanted to upgrade from my entry level kit to a more professional rig. Do you have any advice on how to afford all of this equipment, or did you rent it on a per gig basis at first? It feels like a chicken and egg situation where you need better paying gigs to afford Lectros but the higher paying gigs require this more expensive equipment. My kit includes a Zoom F6 for recording/mixing, 3 pairs of sennheiser TX/RX, and a Rode NTG3. I do not have a power delivery system or a IFB system. Any advice?

Hi Hatim, Advice on how to afford gear? Buy gear as you can afford to and rent it to your clients (most aim for 3-10% per day of the total retail value of the gear). If you treat the equipment as an investment it should all earn it's keep and (once it's paid for itself) it will earn you a second income for as long as it functions. If you want to upgrade your gear, I recommend buying USED. The higher end gear (wireless/recorders) tend to maintain their used value. So if you buy it used, it will likely stay at that same price for years to come - meaning you could later sell it for close to what you paid for it. Otherwise, I recommend avoiding going into debt for gear. Buy it when you NEED it.

Nice bag! One thing that I didn't get is how do you record the second SRC unit since the 633 only has 3 mic inputs? Does the Lectro SRC has any kind of preamp system?

The Lectrosonics SR's output true line level, so they can be output to the line inputs on channel 4-6. I actually run all my SR's at line level, even though the 633's channels 1-3 offer mic pre's.

Hey Jim, i was wondering if there is any difference in plugging the lectros rx in the mic or the line port of the 633? Thinking of buying a 833 over the 633 mostly cause of the 3 more mic inputs but wouldn't really make any difference if I was going to use wisycom or lectro receivers? Hope to here from you!

Pro receivers (like Lectro and Wisy) output Line Level. I see no reason to put them into a preamp. I run all my wireless Line in and think it’s great. If you get your gain staging correct at the transmitter pack, you’ll be in good shape. 3 mic pre’s have been plenty for 99% of my jobs. The 8-Series is nice for many reasons but also quite a bit more expensive. You could probably find a used 633 for less than half a new 833.

Hey man, Im still confused about the battery situation. When you buy that battery do you need to find a adapter for the Hirose input on the mixer?

Robert Conde Hi Rob, The eSmart battery feeds power into the audioroot Distribution (via a fixed battery cup). That Distro box has 6 hirose outputs. In this bag, one is feeding the 633 (so yes that’s a hirose4 to hirose4 cable), the receivers and “hop” transmitter are also each receiving power with hirose4 (to locking DC 2.5mm) cables.

I can’t find that answer anywhere! I currently have a remote audio distro in my bag with same mixer and mics. I’m looking to switch to audio root for power display features.
