A wasp's nest is a complex structure that is a specialized nursery for all aerial-nest-building wasp species. These nests are easily identifiable - most of us have seen one at one time or another hanging from the outside of your home or on a tree. While these structures may look relatively simple, we can take a closer look inside to understand the different parts of the nest and how they help wasps raise a new generation of young.

@@Hellamoody They sure as hell tried! But honestly: I got very lucky. No stings to the face. And only my left hand, where they stung be good at least three times on my index finger.... yeah, that was swollen, sore and especially stiff for a few days. So my conclusion is: grouped stings suck ass. All the other stings were not that bad. Some clearly had no venom and so those did not hurt at all. Wasps can sting endlessly, but they have a limit to how much venom they have at that moment. So if they keep stinging like around after the 4 th sting they will have no more venom. And not all the stings with venom will have the a lot of venom. So yeah...

The Hornet King, who made a post elsewhere in this comments section, actually transports some of the hornet nests he takes down to his house and put some up because they destroy other insects he doesn't want! The way he talked about them, they sounded sort of like miniature bats, but then again the stings are more of a threat (not a certainty) than most people want to potentially deal with. He also takes home the nests that he destroys and gives them to his chickens to eat. Interesting channel.

Dirt or Mud Daubers. They make a compartment, paralyze a spider, carry it to the nest & stuff it in the cell, lay an egg on top of it, seal _that_ compartment with what will be the "floor" of the next compartment and REPEAT until she runs out of insects or energy. The eggs hatch & the larvae eat their breakfast over the next few weeks, then they pupate over the winter and gnaw their way out in the spring...

I've messed around with extinct wasp nests. They are so fascinating to examine. If you have a metal structure you don't want them to build on. Spray the underlying structure with WD40. They can't get the root of their nest to stick because of it. I sprayed a fresh built outdoor car garage with it five years ago, and haven't had a single wasp nest since. (It may need more frequent application in more exposed structures, test on a small area before using to make sure it doesn't react to the paint. Don't use on vinyl siding. Void where prohibited)

I once knocked a wasps nest down and dispersed them with water because it was hangin in front of my garage, after that I was really curious to see what was inside of it so i started dissecting it carefully and opened all the cells with a toothpick then I extracted all of the insects and the larvae (at the time I didn’t know they had that form when they’re young) and put all of them in order from the least similar to the most similar to an actual wasp and I was able to see the different stages and transitions from larvae to adult wasps. The last one looked in every way like a mature adult wasp with wings and the color and everything but still it wasn’t able to fly. It was quite interesting to see how much they change throughout their development.

I have a wasp nest in my compost bin at my allotment. I was working at the plot about 2 feet away from the nest, causing no disturbance to them. One came over to ‘taste’ me - 7 stings in 2 different cluster spots on my leg. That left a massive, itchy red patch for about 10 days, even though I’m currently on antihistamines. It didn’t start going down until I took Ibuprofen (which I’m not allowed to take, for medical reasons). The temptation to destroy the nest is huge… but both my plum tree and all the plum trees on neighbour plots have never had a better crop. And usually the plums are full of insects burrowing into them - not this year for the first time ever. So I’ve bought some sting cream to apply immediately if (when?) I get stung again 😵‍💫

Found one in my loft. Only 4 open cells. If wasps don't make honey. Or pollinate flowers. What are they for?

I really like the message at the end. Leave them alone. They are fascinating creatures who deserve respect and admiration like any other lifeform.

I recently talked with someone about cuckoos. They found the cuckoos' system of laying eggs in other birds' nests very upsetting. Wait till I tell them that wasps lay eggs in live insects to be eaten alive...

How do wasps see inside of their own nests? It looks pretty dark in there so I would assume they either feel their way around or use pheromones

I have two of what I thought to be wasp nests on my pool, but they are small-- one is about 2 inches long and the other is 3- 4 inches, so I'm not sure if they are wasps or something else.

Maybe because it's a different type of wasp. I bet you have yellow jackets.
