Not ion exchange resin but probably a zeolite grain, used as a bulking agent, though it does trap some heavy metals in the structure, Ion exchange resin needs to be kept hydrated, if it dries it fails. It also looks like glass or clear yellowish plastic beads. The zeolite is used in the desiccant sachets as well as a bulking agent and to keep the silica gel crystals apart. Not much there, if it works past 2l of water it will be amazing. Basically you would need that full to the top with real resin and activated charcoal to have an effect, those are pure snake oil. Bet if you poured milk through it would come out still with cream in it. I took apart an inline charcoal filter for a water well, and it had around 1kg of activated charcoal in it, plus the output side had a big wad of burned copper wire, to provide some stabilisation to the water now there is no chlorine in it so the water dispenser tank does not grow a thick bacterial mat in it. After cleaning the water dispenser ( remove the 5cm of gel from the tank and use 5l of bleach to clean the piping) I simply left the filter out. Nobody noticed at all. New filter ( you need to change every 2 months) is $200, so working without was a big saving. Me, I use tap water, no filter, though I am considering putting in a 0.3 micron whole house filter to keep the piping clean. Those are cheap to buy, $5 each for the cartridge as an industrial 8in filter unit.

I thought the point of activated carbon/charcoal is that it has a huge surface area for its size and this allows any toxins to react with it and be contained.

hmm,that`s cool, i have a gravity water filter here that has a outside layer of porous ceramic and inside there is activated charcoal to absorb chlorine (there is a lot of chlorine taste in the tap water here) and there is also a third layer of colloidal Silver that should *kill* undesirable stuff. the "container" is made of clay that is a bit porous and allows water molecules to slowly "pass thru" and evaporate and keeps the inside up to 7 degrees celcius cooler without energy.

I wonder if the charcoal really precipitates out or if it's in fact the other way round. I.e. the spheres floating up (on the wet charcoal) or perhaps travelling to the top of the charcoal akin to the Brazil nut effect. Quite interesting either way.

I've noticed that in the Brita (Canada) branded filters, the resin and the carbon are close enough in density that it won't separate easily with just water or vibration (though the carbon does get flushed out the top of the filter if I try filling my pitcher directly into it. I want to try recharging the carbon (boiling/baking off contaminants) for reuse in other things, but don't think puting plastic resing beads in the over will prooduce a favorable result. I've tried mechanically separating the components using a sheet of paper, and tilting/rolling the beads away. It worked but was too much effort to clean up after. Maybe if I made a vibrating tray with steps to catch the carbon it would be efficient enough. And, Leaving a jar of the mixed media ontop of my aircleaner/vibrating table has resulted in the larger carbon granuals interlocking, pushing the larger beads of resin and steel shot(!?) to the top layer, while smaller beads and granuals settle throughout the mix. Which isn't good enough.

The "steel shot" is probably silver. Silver is is an effective antibaterial agent.
@LynxSnowCat

I'd believe you if I found (on average) more than 1 shot per three filter/media cartridges. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ball_mill commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Ball_mills edit: I've put a 1L jar of media on top of my air cleaner, in a couple months (if I remember why I've done this and) I'll see if any metal shot has been exposed and try melting it to see it it is silver/silver alloy.
@LynxSnowCat
@LynxSnowCat 3 жыл бұрын
(5 years later) Forgot to reply. Metal shot was magnetic enough be collected with a tool magnet then to stick to the jar lid afterwards; However it splintered apart after handling, and was set aside to avoid contaminating my electronics. ... It is at this point that I lost track of it before trying melting it or alloying it with solder, etc. I am still confident that it is extremely worn steel shot from the ball-mill that processed the activated carbon.

very interesting. in my peon brain i always felt "filtering" tap water was necessary, but i guess it really just makes it softer? and why do they tell you to submerge it "until air bubbles stop coming out", i assume you're just priming the mixture sort of like you did... I'm going to research this to make up for my embarrassing non queried past usage

I really wouldn't have expected ion exchange resin (I always assumed it was orange, probably due to the association with the word 'resin' to 'tree sap' LOL) I would NOT expect 'softening' to be a feature of a water 'filter'. I'd expect that to be the job of a water softener A filter I want to remove stuff that will harm me, not the kettle...

I have a 10" filter with a 10" housing, but the filter became moldy because I couldn't screw it shut, it didn't go all the way down to the buttom(rounded off housing at the buttom, two different manufacturors. How is the water supposed to flow when the filter is inside the housing?

Hi BigClive, I come from a survivalist / prepper background. It is generally recognised that the domestic water filters are generally pretty useless at removing stuff you actually want to get rid of. We use the best filters in the business, which currently are the Berkey range of filters. The design of these filters is such that they are cleanable & can be used in water containers you supply yourself if needed. These are industrial grade filters & will remove pretty much everything. The link is below. www.berkeywaterfilterseurope.com/berkey-products/berkey-replacements Regards Charlie

Don't known if this channel is still responsive, I know this filter will also trap micro-organism and bacteria which proliferates. It is a vicious cycle if the chlorine is absorbed, and all types of bacteria going through? So it is essential to measure level of bacteria before and after filter (trapped in the device). Next is of course the filter of important minerals. Last point is a question, when you say the material can be cleaned up to some extent, what happen if this material is literally 'washed' with slightly acidic (or alkaline) liquid like vinegar (or sodium bicarbonate)?

I've been opening used filters and keeping the contents. I spread it on top of the soil of the potted herbs on the window sill. I don't know whether that's a good thing, or a bad thing, but they haven't died and it has stopped the algae and mold. Has anybody discovered the perfect use for the used granules? Also, any botanical chemists (you know who you are :) ) out there that can tell me if I'm slowly poisoning my window garden?

Reverse osmosis filter is so much better than these... they also last longer! I was interested once about how effective these filters were and took samples of water to the local water testing place and the results were both filthy lol I guess the easiest way for me to test a water filter is with a pool ph test kit. my tap water is 7.6ph and through a cartridge filter it remains the same while through my reverse osmosis filter it drops to a 6.9, They say it removes 99.9% of contaminants... the other filter companies don't really say what their filters do....
