I have a car battery that has that window indicator, but I didn't realize you had to shake the battery to get a reading? I just looked at the window while it was still housed in my car after driving it for a bit... the indicator is black but I suspect I have either car battery issues or alternator problems but the window didn't suggest it was low on electrolytes... my car is nearly 10 years old but my onboard car dash never gave me an indicator it has battery or alternator issues...

Sulfation happens when a battery remains discharged for a long period. The lead sulfate coating the electrodes hardens, making recharging difficult. It's still possible to recharge the battery, but only very slowly.

It's not showing the level of electrolite, but for work properly electrolite level must be right. Main purpose of battery indicator is to show charge level. Ball will sink if battery is not charged because discharged battery have electrolite with lower density. When discharging, sulfur from sulfuric acid sticks to the plates and electrolite density is lower - ball sinks. Charging battery makes sulfur to go back into electrolite and density goes up. Then ball will be floating
