The metal pieces that you are confuses about, that is actually meant to be there because it helps guide your screws into place, keeps them straight and helps hold the the weight of the speaker, so that it doesn't start to wiggle loose over time and tear the screw hole wider, making it completely useless and then you will have to drill new holes in order to place your speaker back into place., last alot longer over time.

Just bought one of these on estate sale pretty sweet 32.50 for one of these with the 5 speakers and sub. Plus the wireless transmitter. Works good just want to get a used remote for this unit since it didn't came with one.
