The Warner and Swasey Observatory
On a high, grassy knoll overlooking East Cleveland stands the Warner & Swasey Observatory. Once a scientific landmark, today it is a bleak sentinel. Although it operated for more than sixty years, offering what the Plain Dealer called “a plumb line to the heavens,” light pollution from a growing Cleveland reduced its usefulness with each passing year so that by mid century it was no longer a reliable resource for astronomical research.

The Burrell Schmidt 24" 🔭, which was housed in 2nd dome, is at Kitt Peak Nat'l Observatory near Tuscon. Recently had optics upgraded. The 9.5 " refractor , known as Rooftop Telescope, was moved to AW Smith at CWRU (Case Western Reserve University) in 1986. It's available for use by students, faculty & staff after taking course on correct operation.

Rebecca Lott - My thoughts EXACTLY, Miss Lott. Chris is doing everything right, as far as I'm concerned. No unnecessary, flashy intros and outros - no childish antics or pathetic attempts at humor - no need to be the center of attention - no click-bait titles - no phony 'acting' - no annoying repetition of the word 'guys!' He truly loves what he does .. does it to the best of his ability, without obsessing on unnecessary production details, or wasting the viewer's time .. gets the job done, and moves on. A+ in my book! We have a brewery in Bend, Oregon that added an observatory to its building. The building is in the city with a 24" RC telescope for public viewing. Now days there are filters that cut out city lights and allows the night sky to almost be dark! A business could invest in this building, likely get a write-off for its restoration and perhaps even the city would give them a tax-free break for adding value to their community? Start small, block off areas to be developed later but get'r done!

I really enjoyed this. The zoom out from the observatory was a neat way to end this video. I just thought I'd mention that the centre of the Milky Way is in Sagittarius. If one can get away from at least some light pollution, it's definitely worth a look. In August, in the northern hemisphere, Sagittarius is due south of an observer about two hours after sunset.

So, so tragic that a stunning building such as this has been left to deteriorate and be subject to senseless vandalism. I have an two observatories near me. One is in the (old Roman) city of Chichester, West Sussex, England. The other is attached to the home of the late astronomer Sir Patrick Moore in Selsey (pronounced sell-see) which is just a few miles from Chichester. The home is currently owned by the guitarist Brian May from the rock group Queen, who not only is a guitarist. He also has a doctorate in astrophysics and was a great friend of Sir Patrick, who he considers his mentor in astronomy. Brian bought Sir Patrick’s home from him a few years before his elderly and ailing friend died (December 2012 aged 89) when he began to suffer from financial hardship. The observatory was once virtually destroyed by our only hurricane (so far!!) in October of 1988. It was painstakingly rebuilt. Over the course of fifty years he famously recorded over 700 episodes of the BBC programme, The Sky at Night!! Patrick was well loved round here. He listed his address and phone number for all to see in the phone directory, and loved nothing more than to talk about astronomy and show anyone round his observatory. I’m so glad that Brian May is preserving this wonderful piece of our British National history that belonged to such a larger than life, amusing and highly intelligent astronomer. I do believe there are plans for it to become a museum dedicated to Sir Patrick’s career and the history of British astronomy.❤️

This video caused me to remember, a fourth grade, school field trip to there in 1947 or 48. There was lots of walnut paneling and furnishings and polished floors. We got to see the telescopes, but could not look through them as it was daytime. Watched a film about the solar system. . Early primary grade school field trips like this got me interested in math, engineering, and science. By the fifth grade I knew that I would go to college and get an engineering degree. After the war, the name Warner & Swasey was the same as saying precision. When everyone else worked to half a thou, W.& S. worked to a tenth. .Dam the vandals and the stupid administrators who have allowed this destruction to happen.

Just to follow up on your tour of the Ledges in Hinkley. If your still in the Cleveland area , just a stones throw away from the Ledges in Richfield is an abandoned Girl Scout Park that Richfield bought and is turning into a public park. It is over 300 Acres and has dozens of structures, pavilions, outhouses, cottages and even abandoned houses. It has an interesting history, having first been owned by Mr Kirby, an inventor (many people know him as the inventor of the Kirby vacuum cleaner). From what I’ve been told, the site has even been scouted as a potentially location for a horror movie (once you see it you’ll know what I mean). sadly it probably already is for vagrants and drug addicts :( much like Tacoma WA first Elk's Lodge did (before McMenamin bought and saved it) for many years. They broke in and broke history. And since there were no unboarded windows and the place they made entry was hidden from everyday community members sight, the city just pretended it wasn't a problem. Millions of dollars were needed (not merely preferred) to make it safe to open to the public as a historic restaurant. Hazmat was required (so many needles, broken glass bottles and pipes, condoms, excrement etc ToT) as well as mold treatments and cleaning they do in meth kitchens. It's heartbreaking to me. So many historic places used with less respect than a garbage barge. "kids will be kids.... they're not vandalizing with that spray paint...they are expressing themselves!" "Stop shaming chemically dependent community members! Refusing to live in a treatment program to give themselves a place to get on their feet and be a productive member of society again is cruel and humiliating/degrading." Hyperbole of course... but it's the way I vent when I see pieces of history and landmarks that can never be replaced, destroyed and then get told it's no big deal and they have the right to do these things and I should support them. Here in Washington, it feels more and more like the whole state is becoming a homeless camp with a state or city financed place within stumbling distance where they help people safely inject their drugs bought with their disability or welfare money. :( Thank God the rest of the country didn't buy into Governor Jay Insley's BS. This country would be even more lost (hard to conceive of that level of bad) than it is. Sorry for the rant!!

Every abandoned place you go you should leave like a sticker or something on the wall saying “Subscribe to Mobile Instinct” or something like that

I was on a grade school field trip to this place back in the 70s. Later in the mid 90s after it was already closed permanently my dad said that the guy who brought it was a crook. It sat for years and i would drive past everyday later in my years and was always curious about the fact that it was abandoned and that nothing was being done to it. Thanks for visiting my hometown.

If the owner was convicted of fraud then why wasn't the property sold to compensate his victim(s)? - Doesn't make sense.

Hardly anything about the law and Gov't makes much sense. Do you remember the episode on M*A*S*H where Frank (AKA "Ferret Face") discovered the natives were raiding their refuse piles and he decided this stuff they'd _thrown away_ had to be guarded by men with weapons until it could be auctioned, instead? My eldest brother was in the USAF, stationed in the US, and saw the same thing, armed men guarding a dump so nobody could take anything before they _burned it!_ Don't try to figure it out or you'll end up at the Ha-Ha Hotel wearing a canvas housecoat and being kept away from sharp things.

It was abandoned in 1983, the person convicted of fraud didn’t buy it until 2005. Since it had already sat abandoned and didn’t sell for 22 years since it first closed, it’s more likely that no one was interested in purchasing it. Given that the 1st buyer wasn’t until 2005, it stood little chance of being resold anytime after that.

Properties sell when people buy them. If no one wants to buy it. It don't sell. It's also likly the property is trapped in litigation limbo. Wich can go on for decades.

It could still be a very neat house. From what I see it's mostly brick . It could be a little expensive but it's very fixable. Finding out who owns it now and get them to sell it may be hard.

The owner went to prison and it would take millions of dollars to restore the property.

Buildings like this, with this level of craftsmanship and attention to detail, will never be duplicated again. If the city of Cleveland was smart (I know they aren't, I'm in the area) they would have taken this over and given it to the park service. At the very least, it could have been turned into a science center. At this point, it appears to be beyond repair.

Yeah, it says wow! He must have someone with him. It was clear as day. Im assuming he has his gf with him or something... His camera light gave him problems earlier in the video when he was walking up that stairwell... First thing I thought of was a spirit. Then I heard the voice clearly and now I'm really wondering...
