I really appreciate your going in to depth on so much Mauser-related content. Clears up a lot of obscure questions that Google rarely or never answers. 8mm Mauser doesn't get as much love as it deserves these days, in my humble opinion.

Great vid Mike, some insight: I've shot a few hundred of the lacquered steel cased 8mm from 43 and 44 and inside most of the cases was rust. Ive had many complete case failures resulting in cracks going the length of the whole case. But oddly enough when shooting you don't notice anything different. No severe gas leaks or anything. It's only obvious when you look at the cases afterwards. Not sure how safe that is, but thats my experience with this stuff (and also the same type of lacquered East German 8mm from the 50's)

I got about 400 rounds and one box was an older version. The tip was exposed steel but it was a lot more rusty and corroded then the regular ones. The older box says “Ptr Smk” rather than the “15 patronen smk”

Gotta consider that Germany was cranking this stuff out as fast as possible and likely not loading anything in perfect atmospheric conditions. Germany is extremely humid most times of the year and most components may had been exposed to moisture in the air before being loaded

You failed to answer a very important question... What's actually in the bullet? I'll apologize if I missed it, because I skipped through it all quite fast, but I didn't see you cut open a bullet. SmK or Spitzgeschoss mit Kern means it's a pointy bullet with a core. Core of what? EDIT: gave it some more time and you said "steel core bullet", I guess that's my question answered, thank you!

Question: Does Mil-Surplus rounds were safety to fire at those modern rifles?
@MikeB128
@MikeB128 2 жыл бұрын
Huh?
@erickolb8581
@erickolb8581 2 жыл бұрын
You should see if the firing spring is lighter weight. Many milsurp rounds have tougher primers so a lighter spring may not consistently set them off. Some modern Mauser rifles do not come with heavy recoil springs such as mine so I had to upgrade to a heavier firing spring. If you have a Mauser rifle, it should be safe to fire though. Remember, most bolt actions are Mauser clones.
