So basically and Executive producer can be doing anything or nothing on a set

That’s assuming they show up to set, which unless they’re also like a showrunner/writer they rarely do.

So would they be above the director? I’m new to film so I was wondering if I were to have a movie idea in mind where I write a script, make a shot list etc, what would my position be to push that story forward and make it into a film?

It depends on what roles, if you wrote the script you’re credited as a writer but that doesn’t preclude you being a director also or even the Exec Producer. Producers usually have to think of the film overall and they’re usually at the top, especially if it’s their money on the line. The director is in charge of the film, but the Producer is in charge of production as a whole, so it really depends on how your film is setup. If you want to be the one directing actors, working with a DP to block scenes etc - you’ll have to make sure you are the one in charge, which will likely mean also taking on a producers role.

@@LeonUnity so if I wanted to do a lot of these things would that mean I’d have to start my own studio/be an indie filmmaker kind of like George Lucas? I notice how he is in charge of many of the stuff going on in Star Wars.
