I agree A little bit of both actually. From my experience it all comes down to “if you know so much about X then why don’t you do X job instead.”. You can’t have an intellectual discussion with the majority of people here unless either one of said people conform to another’s way of thinking or ideas. There can almost always never be 2 clashing ideas where neither side is right/wrong. People here dragging you down to their level is just icing on the cake.

Ah yes, that guy who talked about smart-shaming topic is spot-on on what he said. As a fellow filipino I deeply agree with his sentiment, sometimes I encounter smart people but pretending to be not, simply because they don't want to be ridiculed as someone " okay, you're so smart so you do everything " or like " boastful smartass " or like " pabibo " and some other insecure people tell off a smart person. Crab-mentality is a really serious issue here in the philippines, its everywhere in our community. Is being dumb that worth the praise and being smart is not?

Smart-shaming aside, I also really hate: 1. "Wealth-shaming". It's sad that when you have more money than others, people will automatically think that you have a bad attitude. When your status in life improves, people will say that you've gone "mayabang." This is why people don't want to strive to make their lives better, and then complain about poverty. 2. When you have big dreams, people will discourage you and call you "ambisyoso" or "ambisyosa" and say that your dreams are impossible and call it "pang-mayaman lang". 3. Parents will treat you as a business investment. Once you graduate, they will pressure you to "pay them back" for everything that they've done for you. There is nothing wrong with encouraging your children to take care of their parents, but please don't FORCE them. Let them "pay you back" because they love you and they are grateful, not because you only pressured them.

I believe "Edi wow", crab mentality and smart shaming owes it's roots to the age old filipino culture of pakikisama since the days of Spanish colonialism. The only way the indio's could fight back against the insulares was thru satire and parody. If someone does not play the pakikisama game and tries to display one's intellectual superiority, one is immediately considered arrogant and people tend to talk behind their back and pull them down. This attitude is further encouraged today by popular TV culture like noon time variety shows where comedian hosts reinforce this behavior thru their comedy acts and banter with guests by smart shaming them in public. Children learn this behavior and grow up emulating these celebrities thinking it is proper behavior.

I live in Japan for 4 years with my family. Japan is very beautiful, clean, efficient, disciplined, convenient, peaceful, etc. But, I am not as happy when I am in my beloved country the Philippines, my home. I love my husband and our lovely daughter, we're happy together here in Japan but whenever I am in the Philippines, my happiness is sky high. I miss the random loud laughter, talking with many friends, huge smiles, smiling eyes, just happy in simple things which I cannot see or experience that here in Japan. Everyone seems to be so serious and preoccupied. I understand that I am currently living in a country with different culture, that I have to adapt because I chose this life, marrying a Japanese husband. But there is this hole in my heart that only my beloved Philippines can fill. I didn't realize this until I live abroad. Even my husband, a Japanese, loves the Philippines too. He always feel carefree, warm and very welcomed in my home country, the Philippines.

The smart shaming thing really hits home to me. I can barely memorize our native language for counting and telling time so I immediately just say it in english because most of my grade school we were incouraged to speak english. Most of my colleagues at work would make assumptions that I am just a rich kid and also being light skinned really adds to that perception when in fact we are just the same, we work in the company and we have the same struggles. Sometimes I would just speak less to people just to avoid getting mocked at.

For what it is worth, anti-intellectualism is a growing global trend. We have that expolding here in India and I see it in popular culture in bothe the UK and the USA. It is scary where it is going. The increased access to information and communication through chat and social media has unfortunately made it seem like the everyone's opinion is equally valid. You used to have to go through years of education and training to become a journalist in order to get access to an audience. Not anymore. That's a good thing and increasingly a dangerous thing. Peace and love. From Hyderabad, India.

Just to clarify....LMAO if some Pinoys mocked you for speaking fluently in English, it's not smart-shaming. It's an inferiority complex. Just because you're proficient in English, doesn't mean you're smart. The Philippines needs to improve its educational curriculum. The new generation is focusing more on honing their linguistic intelligence instead of honing their technical and critical thinking skills. That kinda sucks since it inadvertently makes Filipinos look like a "manpower reservoir" for overseas countries. Japan, South Korea, and China were able to industrialize and develop bc they focused more on developing their manpower's technical and critical thinking skills.

@1:27 is spot on about the Filipino mentality. In the Philippines you're more likeable if you act or sound stupid. Having or showing intellect is shunned. It's not cool to be smart in the Philippines. Often times when you express any form of intellect or even when you achieve something that shows your intellectual capacity, you will be met with responses like "eh di wow" or "ikaw na" or described as "pasikat" (showing off, trying to be known) or "mayabang" (boastful) - these descriptions may be said in a playful manner, or behind your back. I honestly think more than corruption, this mentality is the reason why the Philippines will never really develop or change. Majority of the poor will stay poor not because of the government, corruption, or whatever policy government introduces, but because of this ingrained mentality. There is too much focus on the government and corruption when people should really start to look at themselves as a source of change.

this behavior most probably existed even way back to the spanish times, rizal even represented it through pilosopo tasyo in his books as that man, common people deem as a lunatic despite being regarded as a genius or respected old man by the rare colleague he encounters. i think the only best solution at least we can do about this is to at least promise to ourselves to not contribute and perpetuate such attitudes in ourselves and our future children. this thinking needs to be erased from our society if possibly not at once, then at least gradually with each of the next generations

It bleeds into discussion about religion and science too. Some Filipinos will leave explanations "up to God" or put more trust in a central authority over thinking about scientific evidence, facts, and statistics. Or if they do trust them, use them to support their views out of context. I don't have any problems with believing in a God, but I just wish they'd take their ability to logic one step further. Anti-intellectualism is indeed very real in the Philippine culture right now. Maybe not in formal settings, but once you step outside into the public and you just act naturally smart, you get shamed and labeled as a know-it-all even when you're not even trying to. It gets worse especially in schools; you get bullied or ridiculed just for excelling in the class.

I would just like to clarify that my comment does not discriminate Manila. I was suggesting that they should ADD Filipinos in the provinces to really show the common and general perspective of Filipinos and if they will go to the provinces, they should not just interview "probinsyanos" who live in the metropolitan areas (like Metro Cebu, Metro Davao, Metro Naga, Metro Legazpi, Metro Iloilo, etc.) because city dwellers will always have different experiences from those who live in the RURAL AREAS.

My dream is staying in korea as a filipino. But now I realize that in my opinion, living here in the Philippines is actually much better than in Korea because I just learned that if you're a foreigner there even if you live there for a long period of time you'll always be foreigner no matter what. And applying for visa is really hard there.

It is very true. They see their selves like somewhat above filipinos probably because they think korea is more advance in almost all aspects and their country is richer than the philippines. They see themselves like a westener in asia to the point they act like what westener react to asians, being a racist in someways. Eventough some filipinos married to koreans, most korean family doesnt want filipinos to be their in-laws. They want westener or koreans atleast or foreigners that comes from progressive countries as well. That was the vibes.

Our downfall is that we are more emotional than logical. We want to be a part of a group than stand out as individual. Its in our culture. I work in a call center and I've had several customers degrading me because I'm Filipino. They say that foreigners only exploit our women, sexualize them for money, enslave us because we're just a bunch of maids, we're dumb & that we know nothing about advancements. I believe the only reason why they think lowly of us is because we let them. The country's problem is that we are too dependent from other countries. We are rich in resources and talents, but we are too lazy to cultivate our own goods and we allow foreigners to cultivate our goods for us and they sell those goods to us for a more expensive price. We put them in a pedestal and we end up getting stomped. This only happens because we allow them to. If we want their mindset about us to change, then the change starts from ourselves. Us Filipinos don't like to be disciplined, we have that "pwede na" or "bahala na" mentality which is destroying our country. We only choose a specific leader because this person is a trend, not understand the cause and effect. Kapoy rant kasi andami pa

Smart-shaming aside, I also seriously hate the "Nosebleed" bs. I find it really stupid how some people will brush you off and put you down just for being fluent in english and yet these are the same people that see/treat foreigners like they're the bee's knees and listen/watch movies and music that's in english. Don't even get me started on how much they worship imported goods-- Despite being a filipino myself, I was mainly taught things in english even at school (hecc, they even discouraged speaking in tagalog there smh) so I'm not very good at tagalog and as much as I want to really improve my fluency in it, I get shamed and mocked for even trying so what's the point? And then you get people who get off of hurting/putting down others but as soon as you stand up for yourself, they pull the "joke lang!" or "ang OA mo naman" card

On average, Filipinos are moderately proficient in English. That proficiency varies on what part of the Philippines you are in. If you talk to people near the universities and in the business centers, their English will be rather decent. If you go to the countryside, their English won't be as fluent. I think they have a good vocab base, but they tend to be shy about speaking it

I think this so called "smart shaming" thing is a result, if i can put it that way, of the way how we are taught in school. Classroom scenario here is more of a theoretical check on terms on the books where teachers ask what is and students answer. and stop there. There was no why, how, what should be, what could have been or so much more in the discussion that will encourage molding wisdom for oneself. if Filipino students are attuned to classroom discussion as a generally-accepted form of learning, they could have been more liberal and rational in looking into what the others are saying and not readily block what the others are saying, or smart shaming as called. This is how i feel based on my experience of studies for one year in another country.

The part of immigrating to countries like the US or Canada isn’t always good for options, I know this because my mom worked as a medical professional in Philippines. When she moved to the US with me, she had to go back to school because her medical license in PH isn’t considered valid in the US. It was hard watching her struggle as a young child and my dad was almost never around; so she technically raised me by herself. Also, for those Asians who want to go to school in the US, it’s now nearly impossible to get accepted by a university. Even though, my mom said she had better opportunities in PH than the US.

I can definitely relate to kuya who brought the issue about smart shaming culture. It's one of the most toxic quality of the Filipinos, smart shaming when they can't fathom or relate on what you're talking about. "Edi ikaw na magaling!" "Ah talaga ba? Sml?" I have encountered and heard many of these scenarios almost every single day, lalo na sa school, and the worst, they will all laugh at you, when you're just expressing your ideas. Shempre, hindi lang 'yan. CRAB MENTALITY din and isa sa main problem here in our country. They will try to bring you down if they sensed that you have more knowledge than them. Nevertheless, all we have to do is to accept the reality that Filipinos will never change. Accept the fact na maraming insecure dito sa Pinas!

Been living in the US for 9 months and I have to say I really miss the Philippines badly. Very social country, great food, laid back lifestyle. The tourism phrase "It's More Fun in the Philippines" really applies. It's easily more fun there, if...you actually have ENOUGH income. Cost of living is relatively cheap by Western standards. A high-end meal in Manila would cost you around 500 pesos ($10 US) or less per person. A meal of the same quality will cost me $20-$30 in the US. However, $10 is already the minimum DAILY wage in the Philippines whereas you earn the same amount in another country in less than an hour. A friend told me once...."Philippines is a very lucky country, if money is not taken into account."

Upscale restaurants in Manila are great. Better than the average restaurant in the US. Manila has Mong Kok, Tim Ho Wan, Ramen Nagi, which I barely find in the US. Street food in Manila is on the crappy side though. Thai street food is better. America's tastebuds prefer the bland, less salty taste. Filipinos' basic seasonings (soy sauce, vinegar, banana ketchup, etc.) are good.

On my own opinion, mostly rich are rich stays rich and poor are poor stay as poor, why? because of economic problem, corruption is one of the reason why most people here don't change the way they live. I can see also that mindset of most Filipinos here are, complaining on the economic and president, but I can say that it should start on themselves and not depend on the growth of the country, if they want to live the way they want, they have to look things that will change their future and have better future. And i felt a shame that I did not love my country enough. But now it's different I am not rich i don't even have money of my own but I don't want to live in any other place but here in the Philippines. Because if you go to other countries people will have the same complains like the Philippines, many of them will say I would rather live in another country. I feel sorry for the Philippines because her people and the politicians lacks patriotic feeling for her because if politicians love this country there will be no corruption. That's because a few elite wanted to control the destiny of the Philippines. Look at Singapore which was founded around 1965 I believe. That is not long ago. But they had foresight and they are strict against corruption. And the amazing thing is they have no natural resources like oil or diamonds in Singapore yet they have a very high standard of living. They believe in the saying that a high tide will raise all ships. In the Philippines some feel better to know they are at the top and others looking up at them jealous of them. As long at that mentality exists there will be no progress. That is unless you have a revolution like France did on Bastille Day when they threw out the monarchy and imprisoned the king and used the guillotine.

It's easier to get a broad spectrum of opinions in Manila. Many of the people there come from all over the Philippines. It's like Americans coming from states like Ohio and Iowa to New York City to see if they can improve their lives. If they go to the provinces they will most likely get people with a similar mentality who speak the same local or provincial language. So Manila is the best. Right now I know two people in Manila metro one is from Cebu who speaks Visaya. The other is from Pangasinan whose language is Pangasinan. But they both speak Tagalog. So these are two different people from opposite sides of the Philippines who could best give their opinions.

Almost half of my colleagues in my accounts dept in Singapore are from the Philippines. Some of them can’t wait go back to their country but gotta stay to earn more money first.. they seem kinda homesick sadly.. Whereas for some, they r glad they came to SG and decided to stay in SG forever (:

I've lived in the Philippines for the past 8 1/2 years and, except for Manila, it's not really that over populated. In fact, if you move to one of the provinces, like in Southern Leyte, it is a very nice number of people there. For awhile you will get a lot of people, especially children, staring at you, you as they get used to you, that will fade away.

Yup, I'm from one of the provinces (Zambales) and when I came to Manila for a vacation, it's over populated which made me uncomfortable. Noise, water, air and land pollution, not an ideal place for me. My point is, what they're talking about over population, just include Manila, or some cities, and not the whole Philippines.

I'm from Zambales too but I think it's getting overpopulated now base on what I see as I travel every day.

i'm from maasin (but im working in cebu). life is quite different in the province compared to a major city - traffic, overpopulation, higher cost of living. if i had my career in the province, i'd rather work there. im a software engineer.
