In this video, I move both boats in one evening.
First I move Dutch Barge, Linda followed, by my Narrowboat Jorja.
I also find a skip full of nice goodies!

OMG!!! That was a real treat!! 😂 When you said “…it’ll be fine” I thought “famous last words”. Then you said don’t panic & I burst out laughing like a lunatic. Thanks goodness I don’t have neighbors close by, but my poor dog jumped a mile! Thank you for that😊 I admit, I have been a little neurotic about your hands & feet. 🤷‍♂️ Loved the balancing act, very Cirque Du Soleil like, & then your Jean-Claude Van Damne split….spectacular. I like moving day & the way you explained what you were doing & why was really interesting. I give this video 5 stars!! 🤩. Be interesting to see with your bespoke bin bargains. Thanks Canice. Have a good week. 😊🤗 Kathy

Viewer #2 tonight. The paint job on Linda looks really nice. Much nicer than the rather excremental tone of the undercoat. Looking up the mast, it really looks empty without a proper jolly roger on it. Maybe that can be crowd funded. You know, you have to humour the Captain, just a little.

I am going to get a new Jolly Roger! I’ve had some requests from the tow path about the excitement it invokes in children when they see it! You’re coffees shall pay for it! I’ve been doing a bit of engineering and the there’s a lot of new excremental paint reappearing! 😂😂 There’s no excuse!

I did worry about the weeds and Linda, when I first bought her. I even tried to see if there was a way of retrofitting a weed hatch. However, when I realised I could reach in with my arm I thought, that’ll do. I have seen barges where the prop is right under the hull. Nightmare!

I have found varnish on steps a bit of a challenge, as most varnishes are not tough enough for that sort of wear.

I love the comparison on the differences of a barge and a narrow boat. Since I was researching the other day on what oil I should use in my DAF 1160 and since your engine seams to smoke just a little bit I was wondering on what type of oil you're using? SAE 30 or 15W40? Can't wait for the next refit episode! 😊
@canicebannon
@canicebannon Жыл бұрын
I believe my engine smokes because of wear on the piston rings or valves. Though I haven’t had this confirmed. It’s not the fuel pump or injectors at I have had them serviced. I’m still using the oil that came with the boat. There was a 20litre barrel of 15w40. I’ve just emptied it. If you can, do an in-depth video on the servicing. That would be fascinating! I could do one and release at the same time.

Hey why not put a wire around the cold start & run it up to the control panel?? So you can just pull it from on deck?? 🇬🇧🇬🇧👍👍
@bartgroen4988
@bartgroen4988 Жыл бұрын
It's not really designed for that. Remember this engine was designed in the 1960's or 1970's for industrial/naval use. Different times, different priorities... It's some kind of lever that you have to pull out with some force. Creating a connection with a wire will (I think) be rather vulnerable and prone to failure when not exactly ligned up at all times

I have to go to the engine room to turn on the battery and the fuel, so it’s no hardship to pull the lever. It only need to be pulled on a cold start. I don’t need to use it again. I turn off the engine in the locks to stop poisoning everything and it starts up fine at the key. 😀
@bartgroen4988

Also good practise to do a small visual inspection before starting the engine, that's why we always keep some tasks to be executed in the engineroom of our DAF 475 powered tugboat

A quick question Canice. What is the accepted practice re lock gates in England? Leave them set as you found them (empty if empty and full if full). Or (as in Ireland when a lock gate is old and a little bit dodgy) leave them empty so that it’s the shorter (upper) gate that is under pressure? Ta. Mark K. MVSarah
@canicebannon
@canicebannon Жыл бұрын
That’s a new one on me! In most of England you use the lock and close all the gates behind you to preserve water! If a lock is unusual, there will be a specific set of instructions for operation. The only weird one is on the Grand Union Canal near Hemel Hempstead, where the lock walls are leaking into the surrounding buildings and they ask the lock to be left empty… However, in London it’s the practice to leave the gate open as the waterway is very busy and also, there is no shortage of water…. (Unless there is a shortage of water and they put a sign up….😂) It’s really annoying to arrive at a lock where the previous user is passing you and they have closed the gate, because they’ve come in from the countryside and always close the gate. Most of the lock gates on the River Lea are made of steel…. It’s less historic but the Lea was still a commercial waterway and modernised well into the 20th Century….. It’s a bit more robust.
