I just did mine. You do NOT have to stick it in all the way to the back of your nose. You only stick it in like an inch, just like the man in the video did. It made me sneeze like 6 times and it was uncomfortable, but a lot better than I thought it would be. My CVS gave me everything in a brown paper bag that I threw away afterwards. They called me on my phone to walk me through the process. It was really nice.

Yeah the self administered tests don't require you to put the qtip all the way up there like the ones that aren't. Probably because if they had people trying to shove qtips that far up their noses they would likely injure themselves. They are slightly less accurate though, since they don't go as far up as the nurse administered ones.

There are two main types of nasal self swabs: anterior nares and mid-turbinate. They depend on the swab material. Mid-turbinate a lot of times is inserted 3 inches while anterior nares is only 1 inch. The CDC says even less than that is required for both

I’m actually pissed, the CVS that tested me was the only one with “available appointments” closest to me. I still drove 1 hour to get to it and then there were 9 cars ahead of me. My “appointment” was at 12:10 and needless to say I was early arriving and late leaving. I thought the little sign that says “appointments required for testing” wasn’t bullshit, because there’s no way you can schedule 10 people at the same time by accident

They are collecting specimens from different areas. I believe nasopharyngeal specimens are considered better but this seems to be an anterior nares specimen. It appears these can be done by the individual his or herself. They have the different testing options available for view on the CDC website. I know that at least some physician clinics are gathering nasopharyngeal specimens when they test. This is all as far as I know and I can't say with 100% certainty. It hurt, my nose bled quite a bit and I had blood drainage in the back of my throat. I also had a headache from it for hours afterwards. So, I’m not sure if the girl didn’t know what she was doing but my second test really hurt. I’m kind of thinking she did not do it correctly or with improper technique. I went Tuesday and it was so so easy. The one I went to gave me a paper bag, and the swab was longer and kind of pointed. They make you put on gloves first, then do the swab while they count 15 seconds in each nostril. Then you put it into the tube and break the end off, and seal it in the bag. There's a little door to drop your bag, and they gave me a sanitizing wipe to clean that for the next person. When I pulled up, they needed my DL number, asked if I had insurance (I don't), and they got everything ready. Sje said she would copy my ID but she didnt. It took under 10 minutes. Easy peasy

The nose swab was nothing but alittle tickle going in and out. Ones it was in I felt nothing. The mouth swab was harder just cause it made me cough. All in all, not bad at all. But of course it could all depend on the person taking it and the one performing the test.

I just had my first test today (employer requires it weekly) in case we’re back in the office next week. Super uncomfortable. The national guard is doing it in my area and they did the actual test while I was in the car. I can’t imagine pushing the swab up that far myself! Bring tissue! If your eyes don’t water it wasn’t far enough up. Even now, 6 hours later, I still have a runny nose and didn’t before the test.

If you have symptoms, it’s free. However, if you need a test for traveling or other purposes, the price is ridiculous, around $120 for lab test, $170 for rapid test. Seriously, the US needs to fix its health care system.

@@sarahn.2296 I don’t mind at all. It was fine. Didn’t hurt. Results were difficult to wait for, but they arrive soon enough. But wear a glove. You have to lift a door on a metal bin and they give you an antibacterial wipe. So I’d rather have had a glove ready. The person testing right before you could be positive, so I don’t trust one wipe.

@@andrewlew89 thanks for replying. I have my test scheduled for tomorrow morning. I had a nasal swab (this kind) at a hospital a year ago, then I had the brain-tickling one a few months later and is was excruciating, I'll never do that again. I'm worried though because everyone in these videos say that their results are all negative and I'm worried that the tests aren't going back far enough. Logically I know they are but I get scared of getting a false negative.

I guess CVS uses different methods, my CVS test didn't use an ordinary small Q-tip swab. It was a long one with a fine bristle end. They also didn't use a zip lock bag, which can easily open.....not good! They used an adhesive strip sealed bag! Don't understand why they gave the guy a pack of 4 Q-tips when he only used 1, wasteful.

They're possibly not quite as accurate if you do the self administered ones like he did (about 10% higher chance of false negative, according to studies so far), so I guess some places are choosing to still do the swabs that go deeper.

@@Odiekins Thankfully, so far, the chance of false positives with all forms of covid tests is nearly zero, and even when they do happen, they are largely due to human error (such as contaminated surfaces and the like) and not a flaw with the test itself. Unfortunately, because of the nature of this pandemic and the need to get things to market quickly, the FDA (I'm in the us) has had to allow emergency use authorization, which means they aren't going through the rigorous vetting process they would normally go through with the FDA, and we're having to learn some of their limitations on the fly. But we are really very lucky to have access to relatively accurate testing so quickly in the face of a heretofore unknown virus, and improvements to testing to make them faster, easier, and more accurate are being introduced constantly. Overall, all forms of covid test appear to be very accurate and false negatives are much more of a concern than false positives, both in terms of probability and consequences.

I had mine done in March, it was HORRIBLE. They used like a 6 inch qtip like thing that had a “scraping” end, not a soft cotton end, had to tilt my head back as my dr. stuck it all the way until it feels like it’s scraping your brain, while rotating it for 30 seconds. This looks much less painful but it still makes me cringe.

I work in a urgent care clinic (I'm here now). after reading your comment I went back to measure one of our swabs. You are suppose to insert it up to the line OR until you feel resistance. The line is at 3 1/8". The entire swab is longer - but it doesn't all go in. And, just to explain a little further. There is a clear passage from the nostril to the back of the throat. That's why when you use nose drops, you can often taste them in the back of your throat - - or kids can blow milk out of their noses in the lunchroom when someone tells them a poorly timed joke. It's a straight passage. The swab is so very thin and flexible that it slips in and out easily. And unlike how we were first trained, all that is needed is insert, small twist at the back, remove, and repeat on the other side. I can perform the entire motion in 7 to 10 seconds. Most of my patients tell me, "That wasn't nearly as bad as I had been told - I was so scared! But that was fine." When I was first trained we were to insert, twist and sit in each passage for a slow count of 10...the testing has changed for the better. And lastly, you have a skull in the way... it can't touch/puncture/penetrate your brain (nor do these things to your eyes).
