I went to Jaffna in Sri Lanka to find out what it's really like and see if it's safe for tourists. I found great food, friendly people, and a tropical paradise! Watch as I take you from Colombo to Jaffna by train and then show you around the sights of Jaffna City and meet some locals too.
I'll take you to the beautiful Nallur Kandaswamy Hindu temple, the markets of Jaffna, Jaffna Clock Tower, many local restaurants, and finish with sunset at Jaffna Fort. In the next vlog, we head to the coast and check out Jaffna's best beach.
If you're going to Jaffna, I've uploaded a blog about the best restaurants and there's a handy tourist map of the region at the top of the post too blog.karlrock.com/my-favourit....

When we were in Jaffna in 2016 we really enjoyed it. We were just in time for the big temple festival in the Nallur Kovil which was the most amazing thing we experienced on all our travels. The place was packed with Sri Lankan men in lungis and woman in their best Sarees. Loud drums, chants, buckets full of smoking incense, as effigies were carried through the temple. And at night they were pushing huge chariots around outside. The whole part of the city was closed off for traffic. It was absolutely fantastic. And yes: no cameras, so only memories remain.

I visited Jaffna about 4 years ago and had a wonderful time. I was there during, what I was told, low season: February. The weather was beautiful and i had a great time. I found an old, local guest house and everyday I just wandered around. The food was very good. Whenever I meet people who want to visit India but who are a bit worried about it, then I suggest that they visit Sri Lanka instead. It’s much mellower and not as chaotic.

This video is really heartwarming to me. I visited Jaffna and the surrounding villages in 2014. Back then there wasn’t even a connected railway and we travelled by bus with many military checkpoints. I also attended a topless ceremony which was surprising. I especially enjoyed a tour through the university by a professor who kindly asked for some pictures for their international relations site. Back then things were just about to open up which was clear by so many people in the villages seeing Europeans for the very first time. Great hospitality and honest curiosity by the locals.

I'm so happy that you came to Sri Lanka. I can relate as someone who is 1/4 Sri Lankan Tamil, 1/4 Sinhalese and 1/2 NZ European (a New Lankan). Jaffna is a city full of amazing people who have been brutally treated through 2 and a half decades of civil war and it's so great to see it rebuilding. As you head further South in Sri Lanka, you'll often get that treacle (it's commonly called kithul pani) served with buffalo curd and it is 10 times better and more fresh than with yoghurt. You have to try it!

Karl, definitely digging the vibe of this place. As an Australian looking to venture on his first trip to this part of the world (India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka) with his wife to get out of the touristy norm how does this rate out of all the places you have visited? Looking for your top 5 for a person like myself?

Hey Mate. It's a hard question because I'd need to know more about you and what you want, and what experience you have. Basically I do visit all the touristy places once, then I venture out to the lesser known parts.

Mate, South is tropical weather. The food is spicier than the north. Some cooking will remind you of South East Asia as there was large tradition and cultural exchange between Tamils and them. Kashmir and Ladakh are gorgeous in the winter. Beautiful lakes and treks. North India is jam-packed and more suited to younger travels enjoying the hustle and bustle of mega cities with pollution etc. Rajasthan and Gujerat are a gem as well. Then the interculure of Assam and adjoining states. Dont forget Dajeerling and Simla has a great British foot print there. Kerala has the boat house trips. Really tranquil. There's also few offshore islands to explore. Peshawar. and Chittral are great It is really old world charm. People carry guns like Texas and like minimum like the southern cousins of the USA.

Hi. I'm Australian and have been to Sri Lanka twice with my husband (he's Sri Lankan) and my daughter. Places I would recommend:- 1) Hikkaduwa 2) Kandy 3) Sigiriya 4) Anuradhapura 5) Trincomalee So many places in Colombo to visit. I'd like to travel east as well to Arugam Bay. That has a real 'Noosa' vibe to it though. Very westernised.
