Jerry Orbach?! I didn’t see any of his work except for Law and Order, and he was terrific. It’s nice to see him in his younger days.

Aretha's speaking voice is so soft and sweet and her singing voice has such power and strength, I think her using her real voice is what threw them off! AMAZING!

I get the impression that she was so famous at the time that the panel didn’t think a singer of her stature would be there so none of them thought to name her.

She was by far the biggest singer of the day, universally acclaimed, and she made no attempt to disguise her voice! They were obviously not attuned to Soul and R&B music.

Just about to write that and agree with Diggs comment, nobody assumed star of that stature would be on that show!

Arlene would have been 67 here, and probably didn't spend much time listening to "current" music, but one of the other three should have guessed, other than, as others here have suggested, maybe they didn't expect someone of Aretha's stature to appear on WML

@AJB3 Aretha was on many talk shows and other TV programs in the late 1960's and early 1970's (the height of her carrer) where she was interviewed and also spoke with the hosts of TV shows. In addition, the panelists are in the entertainment business. It's mindboggling they didn't recognize her voice

Remember this was a time before social media. Unless a singer was on TV or radio in interviews, there's no reason why people would know what they sounded like in conversation.

Facebook sent me here. R.I.P The Queen. They should bring this show back. That's the guy from Law & Order.

I just found this, I did not know WML continued after the original cast. Aretha, a shining star, wasn't she amazing? Thank you for posting this episode 🌺

Yes, the show in its original incarnation left the air in 1967, but a five-night per week syndicated version began airing in 1968, and would run until1975. As this was listed as September 1974, it must have been the final season.

It is so good to see Arlene Francis on the show. As far as I know, she was the first female panel member back in the 50's. She was on when the rest of the panel were pompous doctors and mayors.

17:48 "Is it just native to you?" Back-handed compliments always make me chuckle. There is this notion that a black person opens his/her mouth, and wonderful singing automatically comes out... a white person, not so delightful.

Why would they say Aretha Franklin isn't brunette? What color is that then?

Aretha Franklin was a redhead. And yes, it was natural.

I have never seen Aretha Franklin answer so many questions, her speaking voice was sultry in this video. She usually popped right off the stage. She turned into a huge diva. Perhaps that was her reaction to the baloney she dealt within the industry and among the general population. IDK
