ASTONISHING disguise by Channing. Just look away on one of those opening yeps or nos. And then after that disguise.....have you ever seen an MG so utterly herself on the WML set. She chats with them as if they're off-camera. Love that.

Arlene looked great and was fabulous, but somehow you got 24 thumbs up declaring Dorothy looked great. Consider this, if you were a casting assistant for a movie assigned to recruit a great looking woman and you showed up with Dorothy, would you really expect to keep your job? Kind of like an astronaut trainee insisting the Earth is flat.

I just watched an episode where Ms Channing handed the whole panel tennis Diamond bracelets .. Not only generous but her big smile all the time was so radiant and made you feel at ease. I just adored her… when we were kids in the late 70s my mom would play “Diamonds are a girls best friend” … she was one in a million. She had a nice long life, more than others. It was great to see Dorothy back on the show and back at the top of her game! Carol Channing is one of the great Americans. She had an extraordinary power to open the hearts and minds of an entire audience. In that sense, she has been a true spiritual leader. I had the privilege of seeing her work her magic on an audience of 2,000 in a national touring production of "Hello Dolly!" in 1981. Turned that matinee into a sea of love!

+Joe Postove Indeed, I have commented on previous episodes of WML that Dudley Moore played the straight man in their comedy sketches, of which the best IMHO is "The Frog and Peach". It is a testimony to Cook's ability as a comedian and a testimony to Moore's versatility. What I liked about Cook as a guest panelist is that when he couldn't think of anything to ask during the game play, he could still find something funny to say (for example, earrings for dogs).

Or any of Mr Nizer's dozen or so subsequent books it seems. It is unclear if Bennett knew Nizer apart from this occurrence of WML. Nizer and Cerf were only 4 yrs apart in age, and both were very successful lifelong Jewish New Yorkers so it's a safe bet they were aware of each other at the very least. @WhatsMyLine
@WhatsMyLine 10 жыл бұрын
Personally, I think there's a difference. In this example, Bennett was eliciting useful information with each question, though incrementally. As a contrast, let's take a hypothetical contestant who is an airline pilot, to illustrate Dorothy in full camera-hogging mode. Say the panelist before has already determined the guest has something to do with transportation, but gets a no after asking if it's on the ground. Dorothy starts off with "Then you work on something other than the ground?" Yes. "But you do have something to do with transportation, just not ground transportation?" Yes. "And you move about in your work, just not on the ground?" Yes. "If it's other than the ground, Is it either the sea or in the air?" Yes. "Golly, I guess I have to pick one or the other. . . Is it the sea?" No. [expression of total frustration on Dorothy's face, after having just spent a minute of screen time on what was essentially one new question]

What's My Line? But something like that is why Kigallen was important to the program IMO. She was to WML what Howard Cosell was to Monday Night Football in the 70s. People hated Cosell but they watched him and would generally find the program lacking without him. Ultimately, Kilgallen's death I think was the death knell for WML on CBS altogether because it had lost that bigger force personality on the panel. As someone who could carry the show, Arlene was more suited for that role on the looser formatted daily syndicated version, whereas on the CBS version the program could generally fare better in her absence and with Kilgallen there than the other way around. Just MHO.
@VahanNisanian
@VahanNisanian 10 жыл бұрын
epaddon In my opinion, I don't think it would have made any difference, whether Dorothy died or not. By 1967, panel game shows in primetime in general were on the way out, and WML was the last to go.

epaddon Personally, I completely agree (not necessarily as to the cause for the show being cancelled, but as for the quality of the show itself)-- I've said as much in other recent comments. I lost some interest in watching the reruns shortly after they got to the point where Dorothy had died. She was even referred to by the producers as playing the "villain" role on the panel. I think it created a fascinating chemistry, it's a big part of what draws me in to these shows. I wouldn't have it any other way but Dorothy being annoying!

It would be darned interesting to know if Jerry Herman et al had started working in April 1963 on the musical version of Thornton Wilder’s “The Merchant of Yonkers” / “The Matchmaker.” The working titles were “Dolly: A Damned Exasperating Woman” and then “Call on Dolly.” Producer David Merrick first approached Ethel Merman for this musical, and she turned it down; then he approached Mary Martin, and she likewise turned it down. He auditioned Nancy Walker who did not exactly light up his life. I wonder if Channing had heard any hints that her professional life was about to take a major turn. I bet she was a really funny partner with George Burns. Mention of Gracie reminds us that Gracie would be dead within a year and a half.
@WhatsMyLine
@WhatsMyLine 10 жыл бұрын
She was good with Burns, probably one of the better of the endless series of Gracie-substitutes he went through until he found a new career in movies with "The Sunshine Boys". What made it work better than with other partners was that Carol had a completely different style than Gracie did, delivering jokes straight to the audience with her unique, wide-eyed delivery, where Gracie always acted as if the audience wasn't there at all and she was just having a conversation with George. It gave the material enough of a different spin to make it possible for the audience to not just be thinking, "This would be funny if Gracie were saying it," as is the case with all the other Gracie-subs I've seen him work with. And there were MANY.
@loissimmons6558
@loissimmons6558 5 жыл бұрын
The "Gracie-sub" I remember was Connie Stevens on the TV show "Wendy and Me" that was on for one season (1964-65). Miss Stevens was certainly talented, but somehow it just didn't compare to the original, possibly because of the 42 year age difference, among other things. The voice was a little higher-pitched but otherwise similar and the wide-eyed look was very similar: I am comparing Carol Channing to Georgia Engel who is probably best known as Georgette on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show". Here is a picture of Georgia Engel speaking at the 31st Annual American Women in Radio & Television Gracie Allen Awards at the Marriott Marquis (New York City) in 2006: www.imdb.com/name/nm0257077/mediaviewer/rm503880192 Can you picture Gracie Allen doing this scene with Mary Tyler Moore? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rNdhdsid09qsoI0.html Georgia was typecast as the ditzy, naive blonde, but she had other talents as can be seen in this clip: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qbyidpmgntmpk4k.html

Carol Channing is a delightful guest (great phony voice this time), but did many people outside of NYC know who she was prior to 1964 and "Hello Dolly"? I think she must have been a real mystery to out of towners. I think WML could be very New York centric to the detriment of the show at times.

I've no way of knowing for sure, but I think Channing was fairly well known to audiences through her TV appearances, as Mr. WML has stated, plus she'd scored an enormous hit as the original Lorelei Lee on Broadway in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" before the Monroe film version. Back then, Broadway stars carried much greater currency with the general public, even in Middle America, than they ever would today,

She must have wanted to be guessed by the time she started using the higher voice, because that's the way Arlene figured her out the last time she was on WML. Her low voice this time might have kept them guessing all night, because she really sounded like a man, but I think she gave herself away as soon as she switched to the high squeak.
